    1. [VAFRANKL] Adams, Carter, Rakes
    2. I am new to the list and am hoping to find some info on the family of my ggrandmother Roxie Danna Adams Carter b 1898 in Franklin Co (my grandfather says in Ferrum). Here father was Franklin Carter s/o John Quincy Carter and Betsy Ann Hale, and here mother was Sarah Lewis Adams d/o (in old family records I found data that listed her mother as either Louise Young or Sally Rakes) and her father was an unknown Adams. Roxie married Thomas Jefferson Cochran in 1912 in Eckman, Mcdowell Co, WVa. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Susan surnames researching:Adams, Ball, Carter, Cochran, Cox, East, Manuel, St Clair

    2. Shirley Jordan
    3. I have a line of Martins and Turners in Snow Creek/Martinsville area, although I do not have these 2 names in my database. Some I do have are: 1. Dr. George Martin who married Nannie Montrief they had Arthur Christian Martin (1891-1972) who married Annie B. Brodie (1891-1980). They had George Harold Martin. Don't know who he married, but he had 7 brothers and sisters. I have a Capt. John P. Turner who married Nancy G. Hurd they had John Valler Turner who married Daisy V. Brodie (1877-1916) and they had 3 children. I went to Snow Creek and visited Edith B. Martin, daughter of Arthur Christian Martin and took pictures of several Martin headstones. If you think we might connect, let me know and I'll share everything I have. My direct line runs through the Brodies, so I have not done as extensive research on the Martin line. 3. These maps can be purchased from the Franklin County Historical Society, or Heritage Society, or what ever they now call it. They can be contacted at 65 East Court Street, Rocky Mount, Virginia, 24151. The telephone number is 540-483-1890. E-mail is fchs@neocom.net They're great maps. As best I recall that is how I got mine. Franklin county also has a very nice county history book and cemetery book. Both are good investments if you have roots in these counties. Bedford county and several others also have similiar maps that can be purchased through their historical societies. 3. Sandy, I'm not even going to try and inject myself into your interesting Blankenship puzzles, but thought you'd like to know of these records if you've not already found them. I will summarize: 1792, Nov. 5. the Inventory & appraisement of estate of Benj. Duvall was returned to court and signed by Charles Lumsden, William (x his mark) Bozzle, ISUM (X his mark) BLANKENSHIP. Recorded at Franklin Court (blank month) 1793. 1793, Apr. 1. Will of John Chittwood witnessed by SUSANNAH (X her mark) BLANKENSHIP and John Arthur, Jon Price. Will was proved by oaths of the witnesses Franklin Court Dec.1798 and recorded. 1808, March 23. inventory & appraisement of personal estate of John Plyborn, deceased... includes a note from JOHN BLANKENSHIP account. Signed Mar. 23, 1808; recorded Oct. 8, 1808. [source: T. L. C. Genealogy, Franklin County Virginia Wills 1786-1812, 1991, pp. 29, 42, 82] The only quick observations I can offer are that "Isum Blankenship" and "Susannah Blankenship" were living in Franklin Co. VA at the same time; neither could write their names. Kentucky, Virginia was formed in 1776 from Fincastle, it became extinct in Nov 1780 when it was divided into Fayette, Jefferson and Lincoln, the three original counties of Kentucky, long before the Civil War, Lincoln Co. named for major general Benjamin Lincoln whose army was captured by the British at Charleston in 1799. 3. Margaret; I can't comment on skirmishes, but I have a hunch "Kentucky, VA" referred to a Virginia County by name of Kentucky. There was one. All of Kentucky was originally in VA. You might try that angle and find someone who is a Civil War buff to confirm my hunch. I have the book "The Civil War Day by Day, an Almanac 1861-1865" by E. B. Long, 1971, 1,135 pages. Trouble is: there's no index to names & places, just to dates day by day describing events of the war in locations . So I'd have to read all text day by day to find a skirmish in "Kentucky VA" in hopes of finding a reference to it if it was of sufficient importance to warrant inclusion. Luck. 1. [VAFRANKL] Memorial Day
    2. Memorial Day is a day off. It is a picnic with brats, dogs, burgers, potato salad, baked beans & a beverage of your choice. Memorial Day also signifies the opening of the pool season. But let's not forget what Memorial Day is all about. Let's remember those who fought & served in our armed services. Through genealogical research & the kindness of newfound cousins, I have found many examples of what Memorial Day is all about. This Memorial Day I will remember: * Jack Dempsey Peters, my father's first cousin, who perished in Korea. * William Peters, brother to my gg grandfather Jonathan Peters, who died from head wounds suffered during "Pickett's Charge" at Gettysburg. * Jordan Nichols Peters, my ggg grandfather, who fought in the War of 1812. * Zachariah Peters, brother of my gg grandfather Jonathan Peters, who lost a leg in the Civil War. * Sanford Gadd, brother-in-law of my gg grandfather Jonathan Peters, who died at the Battle of New Market during the Civil War. * My ggggg grandfathers Reuben Huffman & Frederick Lemon who fought for the 13 Colonies independence in the Revolutionary War. * My great uncle E. A. "Lash" Coleman who fought in WWII. * My great uncle Thermos Hinzman who was a POW in Hitler's Nazi Germany. * My great uncles Vernon, Lawrence, Jack & Guy Pritt -- brothers of my grandmother Mernia Pritt Coleman & all veterans of the WWII saga. * My father Shelby H. Peters, a Korean War veteran, who died while on active duty July 31, 1967. Please remember to place some flowers & flags on graves this weekend. Please remember to thank some veterans & please pass me another brat. Happy Memorial Day! Mike Peters npeters102@aol.com
