Linda: In the book "Over the Mountain Men Their Early Court Records in Southwest Virginia" by Anne Lowry Worrell, 1934, reprint by GPC 1996, p. 17, there are listed 5 Potter marriages. The one for Moses you quote is: Potter, Moses, and Frances Kirby, dau. Dicey Bartee - July 14, 1789 Most of the entries appear to be bonds, certainly those with Sureties named were bonds. After a bond was filed the couple could have been married the same day or at a later date in a church or at home, etc., supplying us with the reason we often find so many discrepancies in marriage dates. Many old publications or manuscripts on families often cited the date of the bond as the marriage date. It's nice to have both for one's own family, but a lot of the time we have to settle for either the bond date or a minister's return after the actual marriage ceremony took place. In the entry above for Moses there is no surety listed. I can't guess why. If Frances K. was actually the daughter (yes, it was abbreviated as dau.) of Dicey Bartee, then I will venture a guess Frances' mother Dicey had remarried by July 14 '89. "Sur." usually stood for Surety. The persons name following the Sur. was most likely the Surety for the marriage. Some states referred to it as Bondsman. Does anyone have information on this Sleaton/Slaton or Dis Hong family June 6 1799, Drury HODGES was Surety for Edmond Smith Sleator (this last name is probably SLEATON) and Susanah DIS HONG in Franklin Co. VA. "Marriage bonds of Franklin Co. VA 1786-1858" by Wingfield page 208 I believe this Edmond Smith Sleaton may be related to the John and Edmund Slayden listed below. Susananh HODGES was the daughter of Edmund HODGES & Nepathia Walker, Susananh married John SLAYDEN, who had among other children an Edmund SLAYDEN born 2/13/1777 and died 11/9/1841 in Hopkins Co. KY. His grave has E. SLATON. He is named in his fathers will as Edmund SLAYDEN, and in Edmond HODGES will as Edmond SLAYTON. Most Ky records show the spelling as SLATON thanks for the help Mike
I am working to verify the dates of available vital records for Franklin County? I have...... Births 1853- Marriage 1785- Death 1853- If the above are true, are all records available at the courthouse? Also, can anyone lend insight into when any switches were made from registers to certificates? I want to make sure I am getting the best information available. I have heard stories of researchers elsewhere being given copies of the registers only, when a certificate was also be available with more information. As an f.y.i., Ancestry.com has a database available for FREE until 7/10/00. I found a few names in it, so it must be pretty large. I hope this is appropriate; I am not a marketing rep. or the like. http://www.ancestry.com/search/rectype/inddbs/4725.htm Thanks for any insight regarding the vital records, Chris Straight Fairchild, WI

I saw your above post and checked into my files. I was at a brick wall with my Edward ROBINSON/ROBERTSON b. 1770-1780 m. Mary COGAR in Franklin Co., VA in 1804. Then, I came across Edward and Mary at FamilySearch.com. I'm very leary about "stuff on the internet". There was a woman who submitted several generations of Edward and his ancestors. I wrote to her and she forwarded me her research with sources. Seemed to me like she really did her homework. According to her findings, John ROBERTSON'S wife was Elizabeth -?-. There son, Edward was my gggg grandfather. George would be Edward's brother. I do not know where George went, but Edward and his wife Mary COGAR settled in Braxton Co., (W)VA. He died there about 1836. John ROBERTSON was the s/o Thomas ROBINSON and Jane Magdaline LEGRAND. Thomas ROBINSON was the s/o John ROBINSON and Tabitha JONES. I have her information here, but have really not had time to really read it to make sense of it. She has this line back to England. I will be on vacation and won't be able to check email regularly, but get in touch with me and see what we can do. Remind me, because sometimes I get sooo much email I can not catch up with it all in a timely manner. I look forward to hearing from you. Does anyone know what JOSEPH ROBINSON would have signed his name with the mark "Joseph R Robinson" on a deed between William Cox and Lucy Cox and John Robinson. This deed was from Cumberland Co, VA 26th Aug 1754. Other signers were Field Bradshaw, George Robinson and this Joseph. I have 3 Josephs in the index, but no clue as to one that would have signed with the "R". Also whose son this George was. Just trying to place these people. I am still trying to find my John Robinson's wife's name. He may have served in teh Revolutionary War, and left VA with his two sons, George and Edward, for NC in late 1780s. My John was son of Thomas Robinson and Judith Legrand of Franklin Co., VA.
I'm searching for information on James Adams who was born in Franklin Co., VA, on March 5, 1795, and died August 2, 1857, in Jasper Co, GA. James moved to Elbert Co., GA, from VA in 1818 or 1819. He married Frances Herndon on June 28, 1820. I need the names of James' parents, grandparents, etc, and his brothers and sisters, if he had any. I have undocumented data that James' parents are Thomas Adams, born 1761 and died 1844, and Mary White Adams. This information came from research done by one of James' grandsons. Ginger Virgina A. John, I looked thru some Bedford, Campbell, Franklin published records here & found no Clifton and very little on Wood(s). Have you scoured Amherst Co. records? Obviously you've found proof for Austin's birth in Amherst, and Amherst had been in existence for 30 years before 1791. Was Austin born in 1791 or 1794-1797? Have you obtained either/or a Marriage Bond - Minister's return for the marriage between Austin & Eliza Woods? If so, what other names appear if any? Groping for clues. Hello Franklin County Researchers. I will need to sign off from the list for awhile in July so I'll post my request. I'm searching for the parents of my gr gr grandmother Lucinda MANNING. I believe she was born in 1804 Franklin County. Lucinda was first marr. to Robert RUSSELL about 1825. Her second marr. was to my gr gr grandfather Thomas ADAMS 1836 probably in Ky. I believe Lucinda had a sister named Catherine MANNING who was born abt. 1811. Catherine marr. William Watson ADAMS 3/7/1833 in Nicholas County, Ky. William Watson ADAMS was a brother to my Thomas ADAMS. I'm quite sure Lucinda & Catherine were sisters because William Watson & Catherine had a daughter named Lucinda ADAMS born 1834. I believe the father of Lucinda & Catherine was either William or Henry MANNING, could have been William Henry MANNING. I'm interested in any data regarding this MANNING family. Thanks in advance for your help. Ed Jones New Palestine, In.
