    2. I am looking for Christopher McVaney who enlisted in the VA militia from his home in Winchester, Frederick Co, in 1777. He was born in PA in 1757. There are many variations on the surname unfortunately. Also another link to Winchester is William Ewing son of Janet McElvaney and John Ewing who settled in Winchester CO around 1737. Janet may be aunt of the Christopher I'm looking for. Any information on these family names would be appreciated. Also - where should I start for records? Are there records on enlistees in Winchester?? Thanks, Barbara

    1. [VAFRANKL] William Edwards abt 1798 of Franklin Co VA
    2. Hello All! While researching the possible parents of my ggrandfather, Thomas SHELTON born est 1813 of VA who married Elisabeth ALLEN of NC in 1835, Patrick Co VA, I've looked closely at the family of Josiah SHELTON and Frances FORD who were living in Patrick Co VA - 1860 census- nearby Thomas and family. I find there was a Polly Edwards also in the household of Josiah and Frances in 1860, probably widowed. It seems that this was their daughter, Mary Ann SHELTON born abt 1802 who married William EDWARDS b 1798 of Franklin Co VA. I'm seeking anyone who links to or knows about this family. I find that Mary Shelton and William Edwards had children, America, George, Sarah, Elizabeth, and John all born between 1824 -1832 in Va. I believe that Mary "Polly" Shelton Edwards would be my gg-aunt. Others have listed various children for Josiah and Frances. I'd like to know what anyone has on daughter Mary. Thanks Debbie

    1. [VAFRANKL] Peter/Peters
    2. Am searching for the parents/siblings of Zachariah Peters who married Kessiah Lively on 18 November 1794 in Amherst County, VA. My research has led me to believe that the surnames Peter & Peters are interchangeable. In Amherst County VA Deeds, 1761-1807 we find the following: 7 Feb 1800. RICH. BREEDLOVE & wife MILDRED, to NELSON ANDERSON for $300, 180 acres branches S fork Rockfish. Lines: JNO. BALL, WM. KEY, Glade Road, WM. CABELL, JAS. NEVIL. THOS. KEYS. Wit: ZACH. NEVIL, ELISHA PETERS, ZACH. PETERS, CAREL EADS. This is the only evidence found so far that links Zachariah Peters to a contemporary of the same surname. Because of this, I believe that Zachariah & Elisha may be brothers or cousins. The hunt for Zachariah Peters 1st led myself & some other Peters' researchers to Amherst County, VA & a Rev. William Peter(s). According to a biography posted at ancestry.com, William Peter(s) was a minister of the Church of England who settled in VA in 1750 & who died in 1773. That same biography tells us that one of William Peter(s)' children was Elisha Peters who married Cynthia Turner on 17 February 1806 in Amherst County, VA. There is also another Amherst County marriage of an Elisha Peters to Jane Tiller on 1 June 1792. I do not know if these 2 marriages contain the same or different grooms. According to other information, the Rev. William Peter(s), father of Elisha, came from England with 2 brothers -- Richard Peter & John Peter, Jr. Another researcher has told us that Amherst County records indicate that land was purchased by William, Richard & John, Jr. in 1760. This land was in Albemarle County at the time. Can anyone tell me more about this Peter/Peters family? Any help would be most appreciated. Thank you in advance for any information or guidance in this matter. I look forward to hearing from you. Sincerely, Mike Peters npeters102@aol.com

    1. Re: [VAFRANKL] 1786 Franklin Co. Tax List
    2. Wm Hunt
    3. Hello Tammy, I suppose you've had many personal replies by now, as I've seen none so far on the "Franklin List" but I thought I'd add my 2 cents. "Number of tithes" meant number of individual males who had reached the taxable age set by law for the year 1786. It referred to a Poll tax (head tax) collected by the county. Usually the age for poll tax was 16 and up. But to be absolutely certain, one needs to know the specific law for 1786. Laws changed then, just as they do now. When we read, "Samuel Underwood - 2 " we immediately know 2 males were taxable, and one, presumably, was Samuel Underwood himself. The other could have been younger or older than Samuel. It also means the principal person named, in this case Samuel, was the man responsible for paying the tax. If you can find and read the 1786 tax list for yourself you are likely to find the "number of tithables" was a total written in a column which preceded several other columns -- and if that's all you have, then it was probably extracted from a Personal Property Tax List which often combined poll taxes with personal property. Personal property was slaves, horses, cattle, billiard tables, carriages, and a few other things. Personal Property Tax Lists have nothing to do with Land taxes. Females were never taxable themselves, but they might have had a male of tithable age in their home. In 1787 the tax law set 21 as minimum age for Personal Property Tax. This allows the deduction that each man named as the principal & responsible for the taxes was born by 1766. I understand the value to genealogical research is: 1) proving residence on date in a location; 2) indication of estimated age bracket; 3) calling attention to the intriguing question of identity of other males in the same household. Obviously Samuel might have had a son of age for poll tax. But on the other hand the additional male could have been a brother, etc. Sometimes the Tax Commissioner or the Sheriff made a note stating the relationship if there was one. I think this is a reasonably correct explanation, but others who are experts might disagree or else add even more complications I've never heard of. 1. [VAFRANKL] 1780s VA Tax List Heading Listings
    2. Hello Everyone, I missed the first of this discussion, but thought I post some info I put on Va-Southside a while back for five years in the 1780s of tax lists I took from Powhatan Co info I have. I hope it helps. I don't think I have posted in a while (maybe never)..my 1750-1830s Franklin ..Pitsylvania/Henry, too..include: (1): Choate Byrd/Bird Webb Hawkins; (2) Shelton, Coleman Robertson, Waller Anthony Cooper. First are my mothers. Second are my father. I have found them close together a couple of times, but they didn't meet up until 1942 in Dade Co Missouri. My best, Janet Hunter in Alexandria VA Hello Everyone, I have been travelling and missed the first posts. But the question of tax list headings came up on Va-Southside list, and I posted the info below on some 1780s Powhatan Co tax lists I have. I hope it helps someone. Janet Hunter (Franklin & Vicinity (ie Pittsylvania) Surnames: Choate, Webb, Hawkins, Bird/Byrd, Shelton, Coleman, Robertson, Waller, Anthony, Cooper CNIDR Isearch-cgi 1.20.06 (File: 175) ============================================================ Date: Fri, 5 May 2000 12:05:41 -0400 From: Janet Hunter <JHunter@ibgc.com> To: VA-SOUTHSIDE-L@rootsweb.com Message-ID: <830A132B040ED111A633006097176E921FD3CF@ROCKETSHIP> Subject: [VA-SOUTHSIDE-L] 1780s VA Tax List Headings Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" Hello Cousin Bill Bentley and All: A couple of days ago Bill asked for help with identifying the headings for the columns in the 1788 VA Tax list for Spotsylvania Co. (Yes, tax lists) I went through my files for copies of lists I have for Powhatan Co in the 1780s. I am assuming that each county used the same tax lists?? Am I correct? So, for everybody's future reference here are the 1782, 1784, 1787, 1788 and 1789 headings, taken from two books with all these tax lists for Powhatan. I see no copyright on the books, FYI for the copyright police on the list. 1782 list contains: Name of taxpayer, names of adult slaves Number of free whites Number of slaves Number of wheels (note on Powhatan there are notations as to whether it is a phaeton, a carriage, etc. These are "pleasure" vehicles, hence the extra. Farm wagons not included) Number of horses Number of cattle Number of ordinary licenses. 1784 list contains: Taxpayer's names, names of slaves Number of free males over 21 Same between 16 & 21 Slaves above 16 Slaves under 16 Number of covering horses (ie studs) and rates Number of horses Number of mules Number of cattle Number of wheels Ordinary licenses. 1787 List contains: Names chargeable with Tax Names of White Male Tithables White males 16 to 21 Blacks over 16 Blacks under 16 Horses, mares, colts and mules Cattle Carriage wheels Ordinary licenses Billiard tables Stud Horses Rates of covering per season Practicing Physicians, Apothecaries & Surgeons Blacks exempt. 1788 AND 1789 lists contain: Names chargeable with TAX Names of White Male Tithables Blacks over 16 Blacks between 12 and 16 Horses, mares, colts and mules Ordinary licenses Billiard tables Number of stud horses Rates of covering per season Practicing Physicians, Apothecaries & Surgeons I hope this helps. FYI, Bill, our Samuel Bentley had a chair (light one-horse carriage-chaise or gig-in 1763 in Amelia Co. Only person in Amelia in 1763 with a four-wheeled pleasure state carriage...i,e, "chariot"...was Thomas TABB. 2. Roy Harris
    3. Many thanks to all who posted very helpful responses to my questions about the Robert Bond and Anny Starkey marriage bond. I believe that I now have as accurate a reading as possible from my photocopy, the quality of which is really quite good. I repost, following my signature, a new copy, cleaned up in its presentation, corrected, and annotated. Roy Harris Know all men by these presents that we Robert Bond & Samuel Ozburn are Held and firmly bound unto Robert Brook Esquire Governor or Chief Magistrate of The state of Virginia in the sum of one Hundred dollars Current Money of Virginia to Which payment well and truly to be Made We bind ourselves our Heirs & E[xecutors]* firmly by these presents sealed with our seals and dated the 18th** day of October 179[6]*** The condition of the above obligation is such That whereas there is a marriage Shortly Intended to be Had & Solemnized betweeen the above Bound Robert Bond & Anny Starkey Now if there shall be no lawfull Cause to obstruct the said Marriage then the above obligation to be Void else to remain in full force & Virtue Robert Bond [Seal] Joshua Starkey [Seal] *"Executors" is abbreviated by E- joined to the ampersand before it; in the language of the period, the longer expression "Executors and Administrators" is more common. **The day was read as 18 by Ann Lowery Worrell when preparing her book published in 1934. I had previously read it as 15, but now believe it to be 18. ***The last digit of the year is unreadable today, having been lost in the wear resulting from the folding of the paper. There appears to be a stroke that could be the ascender expected in the number 6. The fact that Robert Brooke was Governor from Dec. 01, 1794 until Nov. 30, 1796 supports the reading 6.

    3. Roy, 1st paragraph: Reconsider the illegible word is &... i. e. "Governor & Chief Magistrate". Balance of paragraph is near perfect, except consider throwing out (fundy?) and replace it with "assigns"... probably written with old style double ss. it should read, ..."we bind ourselves our heirs & assigns by these presents..." It's a standard phrase seen a zillion times. Sometimes it's seen as our Heirs our Exors and assigns.. Next paragraph is nearly perfect if you just remove the x's. Ann Lowry Worrell read the bond in 1934 and thought it said Robert Bond and Sally Ann Starkey; Samuel Ozburn, surety. Oct. 18, 1796. It's in her book. Maybe more later. Bill

I believe they lived in Franklin County in the 1800s. Their children were Charlie Law, John Wesley Law (my grandfather), Worth Pannell (sp.) Law, Daisy Law, Flournoy (sp.) Law, and others. John Wesley Law's children were Ruby Mae (my mother), Charlie Doyle, Johnny (or Johnnie) Edgar, Jack Monroe, Florence Elsie, Ralph Waldo, and Roy Ernest. Myrtle Allison Minter's parents were Joe (or Joseph) Minter who married Chaney (sp.) Eggleston. I believe they lived most of their lives in or near Martinsville or Franklin County, VA. Children included Myrtle Allison Minter (my grandmother) and others. If you know about any of the individuals mentioned, please send me an e-mail or postal note. Thanks.
