Donna, It is real good to see you back on-line after what you have been thru over the past few months. We are shocked and surprised to learn that the Menefee Library has been closed and not available to the membership. From your note it sounds as though some do not have the interest of the Society at heart. This is all news to us. Since we are in Richmond, we are limited at attending meeting, but if there are problems why has it been kept from the membership? Maybe this is stepping on a few toes, but we are disappointed. I joined the Genealogy Society and paid the lifetime dues when they were offered. Is this the life of the member or life of the society? I will stay with genealogy wherever this leads. If I can be of help, please knock !! Dear Friends, I have been a member of the Franklin County Genealogy Society, then it went to Franklin County Heritage Society and now Franklin County Historical Society. My interest mostly is genealogy but you need some of the history to understand wills, deeds, courts etc. etc. I left Franklin County on May 8th, my son was in a flash fire, We lived at UVA for 2 months , then we brought him to the local hospital for about a month. He died July 27, 2000. Well, I have just recently started back and calling to see what I can do. I know it has been an awful year: *I lost my son *Beverly Merritt lost her husband and aunt *Edith lost a loved one *others who have suffered tragedy *Dorothy Ramsey Cundiff lost her husband. Now, I am back home, I was going to try and help a little but when I called the library today, they informed me that the library is closed and the locks have been changed. Noone seems to know what is going on. I would like to ask you a few questions: 1. Would you be interested if we just went back to the genealogy society. We had wonderful meetings, the room full of people, we talked with one another, we went on little field trips, I remember Rebecca and I sit inthe car because we couldn't walk down to the grave but we looked up and here come a big, big buck running into the cornfields. Then we found a tombstone up against a tree. _____________yes_____________no 2.We could go back to meeting at the Franklin County Library board room, we use to fill the room. I enjoyed thoses days. _____________yes______________no 3. Had you rather stay with the historical society and try and build it back up again? _____________yes______________no 4.Is your interest more in history or genealogy or both. _________history___________genealogy_____________both 5.When the genealogy society got going, it was great, everyone got along , we did field trips, ate lunch together and made new friends. Do you want the genealogy society back? ______________Yes_________________no 6. Would you like to meet every month or everyother month.(if you choose genealogy) __________________Every month__________________Every other month. 7. How often would you like the newsletter printed? WE can fill it with queeries, history facts of the county, stories from members etc. _________________once a month___________________every other month ________________every three months. Please let me know, I love doing genealogy and learning of the history of the county but this is the second time in 3 or 4 years the historical society has had lots of problems. I don't like problems, contraversy, I think we are all adults and should be able to work together for one cause. If something doesn't go the way you think it should, lets talk about it, there is no point in fighting over it when you can sit quietly and discuss it like adults. Thank you, I would love to hear from you, Donna Brown Wilkes
List Members, Thanks to all of you who replied with information regarding various locations and districts within Floyd and Franklin Counties. Your generosity, prompt replies, and assistance was greatly appreciated! Best Regards to All, Doug Lovell aidan0131@msn.com
I need to ask the help of more seasoned researchers in possibly pinpointing some exact locations. Can anyone help to tell me how close in proximity the following would be to each other. 1. Maggodee District from 1880 census 2. Locust Grove District 3. Copper Hill 4. 1860 Simpson PO Also looking for this location: Floyd and Roanoke Co. lines near Rt. 221 with Mt. Olivet Church nearby. Looking to identify 69 acres of land that William Pleasant (Plez) Wimmer sold to Phellam Wood in late 1896-1897. Family surnames within these locations are Wimmer, Richards, Moore, Janney, Austin, Mills, and Nichols. Any help will be most greatly appreciated. Thanks, Doug Lovell aidan0131@msn.com

Hello, Researching the Bradley surname in Franklin County. My great-grandfather was Deck F. Bradley who married Elizabeth Susan Smith in Bedford County, VA and settled there. Deck's parents were Jesse and Drucilla A. Bradley. Jesse and Drucilla's other children were Silas T., Thomas M., Mary O., Philip K., Lucetta, Sarah A.T.E., Julia E., and Louella -- all born in Franklin Co. There may have been others. Looking for any info on this family line. Thanks, kay

I have several names for my great grandmother from Franklin Co. - Craig, Cragit, and Overstreet. Her given name was Rebecca. She married William Henry Wilks, probably called Henry. She died about 1885. Her daughters married Alcorn, Ferguson, Leftwich, and Aliff. Her son, John married Betty Whitworth there in 1882. Pat McAlister

You are on the list as DonandPat@worldnet.att.net and you used the address donandpat@attt.net to unsubscribe. I will unsubscribe DonandPat@worldnet.att.net and hope this works. remove me from the list, thanks
I wanted to take a moment to thank all of you who responded to my earlier apology regarding the Archives. You have all been SO supportive!!! It really means alot to me. I would have preferred to answer you all individually, but there were so MANY responses!!! I did want to answer a couple of questions that I received though. Yes, I do take care of the archives on a volunteer basis, and I continually stretch myself to take care of as many counties as I can because I, like you, want to make sure that new files do continue to be uploaded and that the counties are cared for. Sometimes I have the time & energy to do a fantastic job updating the pages on a timely basis, and sometimes, I just don't have what it takes. But all in all, I love taking care of the Archives and watching them grow. I think it's a wonderful way to volunteer my time & hope I'll be able to continue to do so for a very long time. I have completed the uploads for July, minus a couple of small changes that need to be made and also minus the scanned documents. My next goal is to complete those & then I'll move on to the new files received in August. Then I will send notification to the individual county lists for all the new files uploaded during July & August. After that, I will start work on organizing some new counties that I have adopted. Once those pages are updated, I'll subscribe to the mailing lists for those counties & notify the folks there that the counties now have a new archivist who will TRY to post new files on a timely basis :) I'm sure those folks will be happy as I don't believe those counties have had anything new posted in quite some time. Once again, thanks so much for your support and all your kind words!!! It's good to know that there are real people out there (and nice ones too!) that are benefiting from my time & effort. Thanks again, you're the best!!! I answered my questions on this study by reading up on it at www.byu.edu. It does not, at present , intend to reveal findings to participants. I volunteered anyway to promote the development of the tools and data base in hopes that it may lead to or be a resource for individual queries. I submit an excerpt from the web site: "This study is supervised by the Principal Investigator, Scott R. Woodward, Ph.D.. Dr. Woodward can be contacted at 801-378-6259 with any questions you may have concerning the research and your rights as a research subject." Some of the directories at byu.edu don't work, but I eventually got one which did. Dr. Woodward's e-mail address is scott_woodward@byu.edu. Tom Allman
I am late joining the discussion re BYU and DNA studies ... and I have a few comments and questions. It is well documented that paternal lines can be traced from male to male using the "Y" chromosone. Also, that mitochondrial DNA is transferred from mother to daughter and thus can be used in tracing our maternal lines. My oldest Amerian lines go back to 1608 in Jamestown and are mostly European, possibly some American Indian, and possibly some Melugeon. Many of my ancestors traveled through Fanklin Co., ie Kirby, Owens, Davis, Hodges, and Shockleys. What is the original source who reports a BYU study of genetics for people with ancestors in Franklin Co.? Is it limited to Franklin Co.? Is this a hoax? J. SIms
