    1. [VAFRANKL] Joseph Henry Franklin DOSS
    2. Dear members of Franklin County Genealogy and Historical Society: I've been subscribed to the Franklin County site for quite some time, but I'm not sure if I've ever asked for information about my great grandfather, Joseph Franklin DOSS. He was born in Franklin County in 1827, but we don't know the date and place of his death. We don't hear about him after 1865. Could be his was killed in the Civil War. His occupation was mill operator/mechanic. Joseph married Eliza Bryant in 1854, in the home of her parents, Richard and Annie Young Bryant. On their marriage certificate Joseph listed "Jane" as his mother but left the father's name out. Evidently his father had died earlier. Eliza didn't have her father's name on the certificate, either, and we know that he died not too long before their marriage. Eliza and her children were living in Blacksburg VA according to the 1870 Montgomery County census, but Joseph was not listed. Eliza and the children migrated to Huntington WV also without Joseph. She lived there until she died in 1889. Joseph and Eliza's children were Larkin Tyler, 1855; John Edmund, 1856; Junius Taylor, 1858 (my grandfather); Mary Elizabeth, 1860; Joseph Lee, 1863; and Ona Elizabeth, 1865. Bottom line - Does anyone have any clues to the date and place of death of Joseph Franklin DOSS. Ruth Doss Hanley Merritt Island FL

    1. [VAFRANKL] Re: 1870 Census book
    2. Mornin' group! Well, I'm still interested in the 1870 Franklin Co. census. One point about this census - it has many pages that are not indexed in the state-wide index. I found one of my ancestors, John Kent Bernard, only by looking through page-by-page until I found him on a page that was very hard to read (the ink was very light). I'm wondering if compilers of this census depended on the state index, or if they went through each page of the census to determine residents. Leigh Blount

The Doss, Beheler, Lavinder and Goode children among others, of the early 1800's all grew up together from what I've heard, went to school together and eventually married each other. I have a smattering of Doss's in my base but really haven't expanded into that line at all. I think there may be some Doss info. in the list archives, but don't really know how much. Just thought you would want to know. It will be a great resource and I look forward to a copy. 2. Hi Dan: In listing all the family names at the bottom of your e-mail of 11-26, I noticed in particular two names, MULLINS and BEHELER. In our search for the date and place of death for Joseph Franklin Doss (1827-circa 1867) those two families seemed to be in the same neighborhood as our Doss family. Have you run across the DOSS name? Joseph, my great grandfather, was born in Franklin County and married Eliza Bryant. Their children were Larkin Tyler, John Edmund, Junius Taylor, Mary Elizabeth, Joseph Lee, and Ona Elizabeth. On Joseph's marriage certificate, he wrote in "Jane" as his mother, but didn't include his father's name. His father must have died before their marriage, maybe in the Civil War. His wife, Eliza, didn't have her father's name on the paper, either, and we know he died not long before the wedding. Ruth Doss Hanley Merritt Island FL 32953
