I took another look at the Walter and the Ann in the Sarah Bernard household in Little River County again and from the way the names are written it really does look like they are Chitwood children -- not Bernard . Perhaps the 1880 cencus would clarify that situation. APPARENTLY, his father's name was also WALTER. (I can't say I'm absolutly convinced as I've been given incorrect info about him before) . According to the Arkansas 1900 cencus he was born in Virginia and so was his father. Walter S.B. was born Oct 1865. His mother born in New Jersey. I'm told his mother's last name was Scott. And he's a descendant from Pocahontas (at least that jives w the Scott) I had been told he had a sister named Ida but that was recently corrected to ANN. So , having heard it was Ann instead of Ida, I decided to take another look at some notes I took years ago on the 1870 Franklin county cencus. What I found was a 40 yr old Walter Bernard apparently living alone in Rocky Mount Township (unusual for a man that age in those times) and a little Walter of the right age (within a year) and a little Ann living in a Bernard household also in Rocky Mount. Well, actually I can't tell from my notes if these are children of a John Chitwood who apparently is the husband of Ruth Bernard. But I know from reading the VAFRANKL archives that Robert and Sarah Bernard had a son WALTER that married an ABIGAIL HUMBRICK at age 44 (date doesn'texactly jive w cencus but is prtett clear the census takers weren't terribly carefull about ages) So I can only say I suspect I have found the right branch of the family tree. I don't have alot to go on. Wlater Scott Bernard ran away from home at age 13 and apparently never went home. So the only cencus he would be on with his parents is 1870. But his sister Ann would likely have stayed home and I know she married an Emmet Allen (he was a banker or was it doctor? in Mobile Alabama) So a list of marriages of these children might nail the question. --WebTV-Mail-20042-1999 Content-Disposition: Inline Content-Type: Message/RFC822 Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7Bit Received: from smtpin-102-6.bryant.webtv.net (209.240.198.43) by storefull-102.iap.bryant.webtv.net with WTV-SMTP; Mon, 12 Feb 2001 06:41:02 -0800 (PST) Received: by smtpin-102-6.bryant.webtv.net (WebTV_Postfix) id 889AA103; Mon, 12 Feb 2001 06:41:01 -0800 (PST) Delivered-To: leefinds@webtv.net Received: from pompano.ithink.com (pompano.ithink.com [207.190.0.12]) by smtpin-102-6.bryant.webtv.net (WebTV_Postfix) with ESMTP id BBDC91CF for <LeeFinds@webtv.net>; Mon, 12 Feb 2001 06:41:00 -0800 (PST) Received: from davidwoods (sandbar121.ithink.net [207.190.11.121]) by pompano.ithink.com (Rockliffe SMTPRA 3.4.6) with SMTP id <B0012563492@pompano.ithink.com> for <LeeFinds@webtv.net>; Mon, 12 Feb 2001 09:30:14 -0500 Message-ID: <002c01c09501$9e7e5800$790bbecf@davidwoods> From: "Bambi Woods" <bambi@ithink.net> To: "Susan Herrmann" <LeeFinds@webtv.net> References: <10556-3A86C91F-657@storefull-107.iap.bryant.webtv.net> Subject: Re: Family of Walter Bernard Date: Mon, 12 Feb 2001 09:39:33 -0500 MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit X-Priority: 3 X-MSMail-Priority: Normal X-Mailer: Microsoft Outlook Express 5.50.4522.1200 X-MimeOLE: Produced By Microsoft MimeOLE V5.50.4522.1200 Susan- Please write to me reference Abigail and Walter Bernard. 3. Don; I use the Rules Wizard in MS Outlook to automatically sort my email into folders. I've got a folder for each list I belong to. So all emails going to an address with VAFRANKL-L on the To line goes into a folder called VA Franklin Co. Some of my folders for very remote surnames I only read once every 2-3 weeks and delete most of it based on the Subject line. It lets me focus on one surname or county at a time - particularly helpful when I'm involved in a threaded discussion... I also have the Wizard sort the rest of my known mail for me. Virtually the only thing left in my in box is spam which I can quickly delete by reviewing Subject lines... By the way I vote for the list name in the subject line, too, but it's not as critical for me. Hope this helps (let the PC work for you) Jim Bartlett, Gaithersburg, MD jimbartlett@mindspring.com -----Original Message----- From: Don L. 3. << George Washington Lavinder served in the 19th Va. Infantry in the Civil War- No documents to back this up.>> Hey all, I don't believe (but could be wrong) that George Washington Lavinder served in any Civil War unit officially as he was, according to our family tradition a cripple and used a crutch or cane from an early age. This crutch or cane was taken from George and used as a weapon to kill him in some kind of altercation on the courthouse steps at Rocky Mount. My Gr Gr grandfather Lewis Lavinder is supposed to have revenged the murder of his father and hid out in West Virginia for awhile, but came back at a later date and married Emma Goode in Franklin Co., Virginia. My Gr grandmother was born at Ferrum, Franklin Co., Virginia and later moved to Monroe and then Fayette Co., West Virginia. The Lavinder family of West Virginia was very heavy into the coal industry and were very involved in the mine wars of West Virginia. Any information that expands what is already known of the incident at Rocky Mount would be appreciated. Headlines- Fatal Affray at Rocky Mount, VA. A George Lavinder on the 6th of June, 1870 was in Rocky Mount over an incident about a dog. Other's involved include Otto Goplin, Justice Henderson, a Bowles man. George died from a cracked skull the next night. George had a son with him. He left behind a wife and six children George Washington Lavinder was born about 1820 in Franklin County, Va. and died June, 1870 in Franklin County, Va., he was the son of William and Rachel Parcell Lavinder. He married Sarah Ann (Sallie) Stegall (Stegal,Steagal,Stagal) Jan. 1851 in Franklin County, Va. Sarah Ann Stegall was the daughter of Drinkard and Jane Warren Stegall.
