I have just completed arrangements with the Bedford VA museum staff to have a meeting of folks interested in the surname Overstreet at the Museum Library on Thursday March 8, 2001 from 4 PM until 7 PM. I plan to have my laptop computer with the Bedford Virginia Overstreet (BVO) database available for queries, lookups and corrections/additions. Nothing formal is planned, and it is hoped that lots of stories and answers to questions might be shared. The Bedford workbook printed in 1999, and the new Thomas 'the hatter' Overstreet workbook will be available for any one interested. I will be delighted to field questions before I leave for the east coast on the 7th. My home telephone is 425.252.6542 and my preferred email address is <boverstreet@gocougs.wsu.edu>. Looking for Thorp/Tharp Parrott, who married Elizabeth Sutherland, in Franklin County, VA on May 15, 1793.
Mornin' Peggy, I'm also interested in your Lydia Holland who married Jesse Brooks. I've been working on the Hollands for years and have been trying to fill in some of the Brooks descendants. Lydia Holland was the daughter of John Meador Holland (1778-1845) and Mary Smith (1780-1863). Mary Smith was the daughter of John Smith and Frances Burke. John Meador Holland was the son of Peter Holland, III (c. 1755-1836) and Mary Meador (1757-c. 1826). Mary Meador was the daughter of John Meador and Jane Holloway. Peter Holland, III was the son of Peter Holland, Jr. (c. 1715-1793) and Mariah Diggins. This is our first "common" ancestor - I descend from Peter and Mariah's son Thomas. Peter Holland, Jr. was the son of Peter Holland (c. 1678-1749) and Susannah Tarrant. Peter, Sr. was probably the son of William and Mary Holland, but still working on this generation. Back to Lydia's generation - her husband Jesse Brooks was the son of Levi Brooks and Nancy Hamblin. I haven't worked too much on the Brooks side, but Lydia and Jesse had 9 children that I know about: Martha E., John Meador, Peter H., Robertson F., William E., David Staples Keen, Andrew J., Mary A., and Benjamin W. Now, if you didn't have the ancestors of Lydia Holland and Jesse Brooks, I just counted 16 new ancestors' names. Hope this made your day some. I would love to hear from you on some of their descendants. Later! Leigh Blount
Hello, Seeking information on my Brown family. I have: Rhoda Ann Brown born 02-02-1836 Franklin county (died Kanawha county, Wv married Charles Leavens) and her father Stephen Brown born 1807 Franklin county. Stephen Brown married Harriet Basham 11-17-1828 Franklin county. His father I'm told could have been Rhodham Felsot T. Brown born 1777 who married Frances Bruce. Anyone have any information on this family? Thank you!! Barbara ----------------------------------------------------- Click here for Free Video!! http://www.gohip.com/freevideo/
Fellow researchers: In Franklin Co., I am researching the family of Francis Ferguson (1850 census). There she was listed living with her son Joseph Ferguson, age 21 and Minerva, age 12. Joseph was listed as "head of household". Joseph married Elizabeth Griffith in 1851. I believe this Eliz. Griffith to be one of the four oldest daughters (1840 census) of John C. Griffith and Martha Griffith. This Griffith family can only account for three of these documented daughters. I believe my Elizabeth to be the fourth. I believe this Joseph Ferguson, my gggrandfather, was tied to the John and Mary (Gill) Ferguson family but have not yet be able to make the connection. Living there also was his younger sister Minerva, age 12. She later married a John Merrell/Morrell in 1859. Family lour says that this John Merrell/Morrell was a widower and an "organ grinder". I have construed this to possibly mean a traveling salesman of that era. I cannot locate her in other census listings. Joseph and Minerva had an older sister, Emily who married Daniel T. Sink in 1841. Joseph and Emily and their families made there way first to Tazewell Co. during the war and eventually to Fayette Co., WV. Joseph and Elizabeth Griffith Ferguson were buried in Mt. Hope, WV. My father searched unsuccessfully for over 40 years. He passed away two years ago. I continue the quest daily and would appreciate any and all help. I have researched all three Ferguson families of Franklin Co. and have extensive information on them. I have and will continue to share all information I have accumulated over the years. Virginia, My interest was peaked by your post as I have Saunders, and a brother of my John Hyde Saunders, Jr., moved to Pittsylvania area as an early settler (Peter Hyde Saunders). There is considerable information on his descendants in "Roots in Virginia" by Nathaniel Claiborne Hale. I have a gedcom which I believe includes all of that information from the "Saunders Treehouse" website at www.familytreemaker.com (I don't know exactly what the URL is, but if you go there and enter a search for Lipscomb Wash, my ggg grandfather who m. Elizabeth Saunders, niece of Peter Hyde, it will come up quickly as there is very little on Lipscomb). I didn't find a Mary Saunders marrying Silas Payne there, BUT like most family histories the book seems to folllow a small group of Peter Hyde Saunders descendants, mostly those from Judge Fleming Saunders. Also re PAYNES. There is an online book on the Joseph and Phoebe Payne family of Bedford Co VA, that veers south to Franklin and then points beyond. The URL is: http://w3.one.net/~evaughan/vaughan/wilson.htm There are some Silas Paynes there, but they are too late, but there might be some clues to help you. It has an index (see link for it). FYI, Elizabeth Saunders sister Sarah, daughter of John Hyde Saunders Jr., married Roderick PAYNE. 1827 in Powhatan Co VA. Peter Hyde was the only one of the children of John Hyde Saunders Sr. to migrate to the VA "frontier" and is acknowledged with his Pittsylvania land in John Hyde Sr.s will. Best Regards, Janet (Baugh) Hunter
