I found two references in census records for Franklin County which I haven't been able to locate on a map..... #1 from the 1860 census -- Retreat Post Office #2 from the 1870 census -- OMaggodee (or Maggodee) Township The latter reference is written in a fairly fancy script, so I am uncertain of my interpretation. Any assistance is appreciated. Chris Straight Fairchild, WI searching for my Franklin County McCormicks http://www.win.bright.net/~mjolby/page6.html
I too would like to express my whole hearted thanks to these two wonderful people! I have found so many of my beautiful new cousins since joining this list, and I hope to continue to find even more. The folks on this list also deserve a thank you, as they are some of the nicest, kindest folks on Rootsweb! They are all so willing to help each other and don't get irate when the newbies send things that really don't pertain to genealogy. They just kindly tell them that they shouldn't send anymore. I have been on some lists when they yell and hollar and even call names the minute someone does something wrong. So Again, Thank you to James & Barbara, and to all the wonderfull people on this list. It has been a pleasure being a part of something so nice. Pam Hart
This marks the 3rd anniversary of the Franklin County genealogy list via email. I just want to express my appreciation to Mr. Spradlin who started with Franklin County and I now want to thank Barbara Stanley for all her hard work and dedication to help others. Thank you both, It sure has helped me! I like making new friends and sharing genealogy. Thank you Barbara, Sincerely, Donna Wilkes
<<What name is abbreviated Jno? I found this on the census for one of my relatives. I thought it was Jr. but he wasn't a Jr.>> Angela, Jno is for Jonathan and most of them were better known as John. Usually Jno is seen in rare instances and the person is usually found most other times as John. If anyone has heard different please reply with other explanations. It's just a kind of shorthand for the writer, like Abm for Abraham and Saml for Samuel and Wm for William. Now, why they used Jno instead of just Jn is beyond me. KAren Worley

On Ancestry.com, under Pulaski births, there is a individual listed under Sheffey. The name is S. Mason Sheffey and this person is a girl. Her parents are Craig and Ann Sheffey. (You have to be a member to view this info). Is it possible that someone in or around Pulaski can look this up for me at the court house. I believe this is my 2g grandmother and her name was Mary Georgia or Georgia Mary but she was called Macie. The date was Jun 20, 1887. Thanks Angela
Hello: I do I trace an adoption that occurred after 1900 but before 1910 in Pulaski County VA? This information will answer a lot of questions. Please advise. Thanks Angela

The below URL for Franklin County Virginia Historical Society is incorrect. The proper URL is: http://fcheritage.hypermart.net. I received my copy of "Franklin County, Va. Dear Franklin Co researchers, I have searched all over VA for the VA origin of my ROBINSON / ROBERSON / ROBERTSON family. The naming pattern in the Franklin Co families by these names - especially the ones married into ENGLISH and HOPKINS families, are remarkably similar. Does anyone recognize either of the families listed below? From the 18th District (Henderson Crossroad - now called Norene) in the Wilson Co TN census of 1850: Anthony B ROBERTSON - 36 VA (~1814 VA) Martha 34 VA (~1816 VA) Alexander 11 VA (~1839 VA) Charles 9 VA (~1841 VA) Mary 8 VA (~1842 VA) Rhoda 4 TN (~1846 TN) Albert 2 TN (~1848 TN) Sally (Sarah) 2 TN (~1848 TN) These additional children are on the 1860 census: Nancy 8 TN (~1852 TN) Henry 6 TN (~1854 TN) Adjacent household: Lewis 58 VA (~1792 VA) missing in 1860 - likely deceased Martha 44 VA (~1806 VA) William 24 VA (~1836 VA) still living with mother in 1860 Calieb 19 VA (~1831 VA) John 16 VA (~1833 VA) still living with mother in 1860 Samuel 14 VA (~1834 VA) Mary 13 VA (~1837 VA) Nathan 8 VA (~1842 VA) still living with mother in 1860 Jane 7 VA (~1843 VA) missing in 1860 - deceased or married Nancy 4 TN (~1846 TN) called "Virginia" on 1860 census Christopher 2 TN (~1848 TN) missing in 1860 - likely deceased My connection to these families: Lewis ROBERTSON (unsure of connection, but believe Anthony is either his son or brother - families were living on adjacent farms in TN and 1860 and appear to have moved from VA to TN together about 1845) Anthony B. ROBERTSON family: Anthony's son Charles L. (~1840 VA) married Sarah Ann Byers (5/7/1850 TN - 11/30/1867 TN). The couple had twin daughters (Sarah Laura & Martha Flaura) on 11/24/1867 and Sarah Ann died a week later. Charles L. ROBERTSON is in the household in the 1870 Wilson TN census with his deceased wife's parents - Moses A. BYERS (8/8/1824 TN - 5/12/1898 TN) and Lucretia PRICHARD BYERS(12/16/1832 - >1898) - and the 2 year old twins. In 1880, the twins (now 12 years old) are still with the grandparents (last name is misspelled BOYER on census), but Charles is gone. I found a marriage of a Charles ROBERTSON to Bettie WRIGHT on 9/23/1880 in Wilson Co. TN which might explain his disappearance. The neighboring DeKalb Co TN newspaper has multiple listings during the 1870''s and 1880's about a Charlie ROBINSON teaching school at a location called Four Corners, which is on the Wilson - DeKalb line. Twin Sarah Laura ROBERTSON died 5/30/1882 without having married. The other twin, Martha Flaura ROBERTSON, married James Henry WHITE (1869 Warren Co TN - 1964 Davidson Co TN) and they had three children. Valeira (1892) Freddie (1894 - lived only 9 days) and Flaura (1896). Martha Flaura ROBERTSON WHITE died 8/23/1896, 13 days after the birth of her daughter Flaura (my maternal grandmother). Do you have a Lewis ROBERTSON or Anthony ROBERTSON in your line? I am in the process of completing work on this transplanted family and willing to share information with others researching the line. I am looking for info on the Peake Family ( also various spellings) of south west Virginia and north west North Carolina. My g-g-grandmother was Loretta or Luratta Gravely her mother was Josie Peake or Peek. Not sure of the spelling of it. Luratta ( this is the name as written on the grave stone ) lived from 1874 to 1982 in the Wythe County area. I'm not sure where she came from accually. She was said to be Cherokee. She was definatly Native( at least 1/2 blood if not more) but not sure what Tribe. I get Cherokee from other sides of my family also, so for those of you who may be wondering bout me LOL I figure if I find out who her mother was I'll get a better picture of who she was. Luratta's father was a Gravley but no one knows anything of him. No name or nothing. We have no idea if he was Native or not. but if Luratta was mixed is wasnt much. She only spoke Native and had no physical characteristics of any other race. ANY help would be apprecited on this line YAll!!!!! I would like to thank all that responded you my request for help. The first city was Rural Retreat in Wythe Co., and the second was Glen Lyn in Giles Co. In 1935 my gr gr gr uncle died in Glen-Lyn. He was a brakeman for the railroad and apparently fell off the train and it ran him over. Anyone remember this? Angela
