    1. [VAFRANKL] Question
    2. Angela Griffin
    3. Hello Lister: I have a question about a name. Several kids in my great great great line have the middle name of Linkous. What are the chances of this name being the maiden name of the great, great, great, grandmother? I have not been able to find any information on her other than she married Craig Sheffy, per the 1870 for Pulaski County. I believe she was a widow prior to marrying Craig because she had kids too old to be Craig's. The marriage did not take place in Pulaski Co, where Craig was born. Two of the lister were gracious enough to look at the county house for me. Can someone offer a suggestion? Oh her name was Amanda (Mandy) and she died prior to 1881 most likely in Pulaski Co. Thanks Angela

    2. Boone (s) Mill Post Office Records held by the National archives and records service in Washington, D.C. show BoonesMill Post Office was established 2/13/1828 In Jan. 1837, The first Postmaster (Mr. George Wright, appointed 2/18/1828) . Mr. WRight had filled out a form listing the nearest post offices to "Boon's Mill"----Rocky Mt. was 12 miles distant Callaway's Mill was 6 miles in one direction and Early's Post Office, formly Cooper's Post Office was six miles. Boon Mill Post Office is on Maggottee Creek. Up to 1868 the post office was named Boon's Mill and the name of the tiny town was Teelsville.Mrs. Saul appointed 10/21/1869 IShe submitted a report to the topographer of the Post Office Dept. She describes the post office near Maggotty, then marked it out and wrote in "Teel's Creek, which she said was 1/8 mile . She said the post office was five miles north of Blackwater River Rural Free Delivary (R.F.D.) began in the U.S. in 1900 but did not become commonplace in Boones Mill until 1908. 1. [VAFRANKL] Maggodee and Retreat
    2. Fairchild Friends
    3. I would like to thank all the geographers who helped me out with my inquiry. Also, thanks to Donna Wilkes for her story on the source of the Maggodee Creek name; very funny. In short, this is a compilation of what you have told me and what I've dug up myself..... Maggodee Township -- It doesn't appear that the township political unit exists anymore, but it appeared to largely lie within the Boones Mill district in the northwest corner of the county. Maggodee Creek runs along present day Highway 220 and into the village of Boones Mill. If anyone can point me in the direction of a map for Maggodee Township, I would appreciate it. Retreat Post Office -- There appears to be some confusion between Rural Retreat and Retreat which I didn't sort out. However, one researcher graciously provided the following latitude and logitude: LAT N37d 02m, W80d 00m. I fed this information into the "advanced find" function at the http://terraserver.homeadvisor.msn.com/default.asp website, then pulled up a USGS topo map which showed Retreat's location as being 7 miles northwest of Rocky Mount as "the crow flies" OR about 3 mile northeast of Callaway. This location was confirmed by a number of others who wrote me. In short, Retreat likely was located within the Maggodee Township, which is what I had hoped to find. Now I can identify the cemeteries and old churches to focus my efforts on. : ) Again, I appreciate everyone's assistance. Thank you, Chris Straight searching for my Franklin County McCormicks http://www.win.bright.net/~mjolby/page6.html

    1. [VAFRANKL] Maggodee Township
    2. Dear Chris, I just wanted to tell you of a story I read yesterday. The orgin of Maggodee Creek's name was related at a meeting of FCHS in 1979. The group discussing the OLD Carolina Road and the need to identify landmarks to determine the exact location of the road and other historic sites in the county. The orginal name of Maggodee Creek was of course, Maggoty Creek, as we know from old records Saunders Gerrant said the Old Carolina Road crossed the creek 22 times and someone was heard to say, "MY GOD, the creek". Spoken and repeated , it became Maggotty Creek. I thought you may enjoy the story. Donna Wilkes Hills of Home-Franklin County,Va.

    3. <<I found two references in census records for Franklin County which I haven't been able to locate on a map..... #1 from the 1860 census -- Retreat Post Office #2 from the 1870 census -- OMaggodee (or Maggodee) Township>> Chris, I haven't seen Retreat Post Office yet so can't help there. Maggodee TWP was what looks to be the North Western corner of Franklin Co. in the 1870 Census. Bordered by Bonbrook on the East, Rocky Mount in the South East, and BlackWater in the South. Maggodee TWP had a total population of 1,879 people enumerated in the 1870 Census.
