    3. Donna, My wish for you is to get well! You've been so helpful to so many people it's good to know your illness isn't keeping you from active searching and reading. As for books, I assume you have, or have read this one: Franklin County Virginia 1786-1986, A Bicentennial History, by John S. and Emily J. Salmon, 1983. I got it via inter-library loan a few years ago. They have been such a great help to me. With a full name index , comparing the duplicate names and households has answered so many questions for me. IT is a great HELP. It took a lot of time and effort on Mr. Hopkins and Beverly's part. They typed, proofed, re-typed, proofed, etc. etc., the full name index is just a great help. If you know of any books that are about Franklin County folks would you please share them with me. I am sick and can not get out to do the research that I would like to do. 1. [VAFRANKL] Bernard
    2. The Williams
    3. I need to find out about two Bernard entries in early Franklin County census records. In 1786 Virginia Personal Property Tax list: Walter Bernard appears first then under his name is the name Nathan Bernard 1 1 0 0 0 1 6 Who was Nathan Bernard? Was he a brother of Walter Bernard? I do not believe that he was a child of Walter's as this name has never appeared on any family list. In the 1820 Franklin County Census Bernard, John VA FRANKLIN CO. P. 135 Yr. 1820 Is this a brother of Walter Bernard? What section of Franklin County does this John Bernard reside in? There is a John Bernard shown on the FC settlement map near Pen Hook very near the Pittsylvania/ FC line. Is this the same John Bernard? Thanks for any help you may be able to give me. It will be greatly appreciated. Jane Bernard Williams Social Circle, Ga.

    1. [VAFRANKL] Murry, Murray, Muncy
    2. I am looking for information on a surname that I found on a marriage certificate (dated Jan 25, 1872) in Floyd County, near Franklin County. The hand writing looks like MURRY, however it could be Murray or even Muncy. The given name was Catherine (age 18). What is confusing is that her parents where listed as just Margarate J. Justice. This has been a dead end for me for years and I would greatly appreciate and information concerning these names in the Floyd, Franklin County area. Ed W.

    3. HI. I thought I got just a whiff of Quakers in those names. (Turner & Janney) Does anyone know? Some VA Quakers transferred to Ohio Monthly Meetings. If you think it worthwhile, check out Wm W. Hinshaw's Encylo. of American Quaker Genealogy, Vol. 6 on VA, but I forget the Vol. # for Ohio. I dimly remember the Janneys' being in Loudon Co. VA and mixed in with Quakers there. At least one James Turner and James Jr. are in Quaker records from vicinity of Bedford, and you know most of Franklin was in Bedford before 1785/6. Luck! 2. Freddie Spradlin
    3. I've just purchased the LDS CD-ROMs of the 1880 census. I'm not yet "expert" on finding folks, with the "search" feature, but would be willing to look for your "missing person" ... If it's a "common name" please be sure and include enough information to tell several of them apart. Regards, Freddie S.

    2. A kind lady from Ferrum sent me an article from the Franklin News Post regarding Graveyard Caught in Middle of Road Change. This is located on Rt. 888 in Franklin Co.near the Floyd Co. line. For years I have been trying to find the burial site of my ancestors, Moses and Margaret Dixon Janney and my grgrandparents Burwell and Mary Radford Janney and 2nd wife of Burwell, Betty Janney Ray Janney. If anyone could get me in contact with some of the parties involved in this, I would be most grateful!! The names of people I read in the paper were: Edith Sharp, a trustee of the cemetery, or a Arlene Turner, James Turner Jr. or Hampton Turner. Some of my ancestors lived on the borderline of Franklin and Floyd Co.s. For close to 10 years we have been traveling from Ca. to Floyd and Franklin to search for info on the Janney family and the burial site. A distant cousin told me his father took him to the burial site many years ago, but, he does not remember how he got there; only that he had to walk through a pasture field, climb over a fence and cross a creek to get to it. My ancestors land was 30 acres in Floyd Co. and 37 acres in Franklin Co. In 1895 the land was sold to a Tazwell Martin, but, I have never been able to find if he willed the land to someone, sold it or whatever. From other documents it looks as if a Co. named Rock Creek Ltd. may have purchased it in later years from another timber Co. from N.C. Is it possible that there may be a record of the people buried in this cemetery???? My grandfather was Robert Janney, son of Burwell and Mary Radford Janney. He enlisted in Jacksonville in 1860, but, stated he never went home after the war and ended up in Ohio. We have his war record from 1860 to early 1865, then lose track of him until his marriage to Mary Elizabeth Francis in Zanesville, Ohio. Ginnypin@aol.com

This was in Tues, 8 May, Springfield MO News Leader, p. 5B: Discovery of cemetery halts roadwork--Associated Press-Kansas City-- Construction of a new highway in south Kansas City has been halted by the discovery of a small cemetery dating back to the Civil War era. State officials are anxious to find any descendants of the Holloway family who are buried in the cemetery. If the heirs can't be found, the state will have to get court permission to move the nine graves in the plot, in order to finish a new Missouri 150. Construction workers recently unearthed a marble headstone, dating from 1858, while moving a large section of water pipe. Archaeologists later found another headstone and evidence of seven other graves. The site has not been disturbed further. Please pass this on to other lists. --------------FE7EC6BC243CF3F9072DC677--

    3. Thanks for everyone's input on Indian Territory in VA. Several of you have asked for details on the Marriage License I mentioned in my earlier email - so here ya go.... They were married 12/25/1902 in Franklin Co, VA. Leo Hyn Wall & Roselle M. Ramsey. He's listed as 31 years old. She's 26. On the 'Color' line, it has 'White' and then right after that there's a blacked-out area where someone has covered up the other word. But there does appear to be a descending character at the end of the word, so I'm assuming it's the Y in Malay. (Note: apparently the Index lists this as: race W & Malay) Anyway, it says that the Husband's residence is 'Indian Territory' and the Wife's is Franklin Co. The Husband's birth place: Canton, China The Wife's birth place: Franklin, Co. VA Husband's parents names: Baur & Sadie Wall Wife's parents names: Daniel & Susan Ramsey Husband's occupation: Steam Laundry (funny, hey?) thanks for the help, SueAnn
