It's amazing what one can find out privately through this mailing list. Just let me say publicly, Kudos to Donna Wilkes and Beverly Merritt for all their efforts behind the scenes. It's good to know we have such people there in Franklin to help where they can. To both of you, THANKS. Edna Clack

Maybe someday when I retire I will be able to mosey on over to Virginia and attend. There's nothing I'd like better than to rub elbows with some of my distant cousins in Franklin Co. My latest link to Franklin Co., Virginia was my Gr grandmother Victoria Ellen Lavinder b. July 7/9, 1882 Franklin Co., Virginia (went to West Virginia) d/o Lewis and Emma (Goode) Lavinder. <<In the 1850 Franklin Co. census a Catherine McGhee, 45 yrs, was living in the household of Samuel James. >> Bev, Catherine McGhee would have been born about 1805 to be 45 in 1850. Samuel James is listed as age 50 with no other James's in the household or neighboring families. There are also no obvious McGhee's in the surrounding houses. I don't find an obvious marriage record for her, but I do have a marriage for a Samuel James April 6, 1791, F.C.V.A. to a Patsy Sneed. Perhaps you might want to look into the possibility that they could be siblings and possible children or some other relation of this earlier Samuel James who married in 1791. Just thoughts without a smidgeon of proof. You might also look into some marriage records for 1830-1850 from someone who has more detailed records for other children who may have married before 1850. Many records such as Marshall Wingfields "Marriage Bonds of Franklin Co., Virginia" have the mother and father listed when known, but my book does not list these details unfortunatly. Good Luck, Dan Cook _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com

In the 1850 Franklin Co. census a Catherine McGhee, 45 yrs, was living in the household of Samuel James. Others living with Catherine, I assume they are her children, are as follows: Eliza McGhee, 14; Mary McGhee 12; Samuel McGhee 8; Sarah McGhee 4. I am interested in Catherine McGhee's maiden name, her husband given name and her connection to Samuel James. Was she just "living" with Samuel James or is she "kin". Any information would be most appreciated. Bev

The following is from the website: http://www.myoutbox.net/ddcv09.htm#491 Daniel Dobyns of Colonial Virginia: His English Ancestry and American Descendants (update of 1969 book) ¶452 ABNER4 DOBYNS (GRIFFIN3, GRIFFIN2, DANIELI) (from ¶393) was born about 1787 in Shenandoah Co. Va. as shown by his being listed as the youngest child of GRIFFIN DOBYNS and his wife MARY ANN when they transferred from the Crooked Run Monthly Meeting in 1788. (fn 498) ABNER DOBYNS died 1 Mar 1858 in Bedford Co. Va. His death is recorded in the Bedford Co. Death Book for that date, giving his age as 71 and his place of birth as Bedford Co. Va. It seems likely that the place of birth is erroneously recorded. On 25 Dec 1809 (Christmas Day) in Bedford Co., ABNER DOBYNS married ELIZABETH WILKES, daughter of SAMUEL WILKES and his wife ELIZABETH NEWMAN. SAMUEL WILKES was born 24 Oct 1764 in Loudon Co. Va. and died 1 July 1837 in Bedford Co. ELIZABETH WILKES was born about 1790. (fn 499) The will of ABNER DOBYNS, written 10 July 1849, proved 27 Sept 1858 (fn 500) mentions his children SAMUEL, SARAH, GRIFFIN, THOMAS M. and BENJAMIN W. DOBYNS. CHILDREN were SAMUEL RUSSELL5 DOBYNS (See ¶453) SARAH "SALLY" DOBYNS GRIFFIN5 DOBYNS (See ¶488) THOMAS MITCHELL5 DOBYNS (See ¶489) BENJAMIN WILKES5 DOBYNS (See ¶496) ********************* From: "milemon" <milemon@email.msn.com> "We are seeking Henrietta DOBYNS born about 1859. On Feb. 7, 1935, 24 individuals and one corporation were indicted for conspiriracy to deprive the United States of its revenues on the production of distilled spirits---moonshine. Among those indicted was Charles Carter Lee, Commonwealth's attorney of Franklin County, Virginia, and grandson of General Robert E. Lee's brother. The trial began on April 22, 1935 and did not end until July 1, 1935. Its 50 day length is thought to be the longest criminal trial in the history of Virginia. It took place in United States District Court in Roanoke, Virginia, and was presided over by Judge John Paul. A furthur six-day trial followed in 1936, for tampering with one of the jurors. Two further trials followed in 1937, when Paul and Hubbard Duling were tried for the murder of Jeff Richards, described as the "treasurer" of the conspiracy. The case has led to two books, Sherwood Anderson's Kit Brandon, and Jess Carr's The Moonshiners. If you have any information to share please contact: T. Rena, I am looking for the cemetery where Norborne Montgomery Taliaferro is buried. Can you help me? Mary
I am new to this list and I hope you can help me. I am seeking information on Abraham Fisher who was born in Franklin County, ca 1828-9. He married 1st. Nancy Kersy, what happened to her, did she die? Divorced?, he married in Patrick County 6 years later to Malinda Wood. Was he on the 1860 Franklin County Census. Any help at all would be most appreciated.
Where can I get the inventory list of the Taliaferro Cemetery?
Hi, I will be in Virginia next month and plan to do some family research while in the area. I have roots in Franklin, Bedford, and Henry counties. Could someone please tell me if there is a local courthouse in each of these areas where I could search for family records? Would i find wills, Marriage certificates, and other documents here, or are they held elsewhere? I have also read that there is a place in Danville, Va. that has a lot of information on the above Counties. Is this a better place to begin my search? Your suggestions are appreciated. Same for Elizabeth Lavinder- many Elizabeth's , comparing the households have answered a lot of questions. Sincerely, Donna B. Wilkes
