Are any Zieglers mentioned in "Nothing but Glory"?
Carrie: Great to hear from you. I'm afraid I can't verify your Rolen S. Bias information since I don't have Union records available for my perusal. Also, I found no one of the Bias/Byus/Byas surname listed at Gettysburg under General Pickett. This is according to "Nothing But Glory -- Pickett's Division at Gettysburg," by Kathy Georg Harrison & John W. Busey. I wish I could have been more helpful. I look forward to hearing from you. Sincerely, Mike Peters npeters102@aol.com
Tim Adams: It's great to talk to you again. No, the question of where the "Franklin Fire Eaters" got there name has not yet been answered. I also still await that answer. Sincerely, Mike Peters npeters102@aol.com
Hi Mike, This certainly is generous of you to do these lookups, so thank you for your time and generosity. If you would not mind, I have only one family member that I am aware of that was present in Gettysburg for the battle. It was ROLEN S. BIAS, he was in the 1st West Virginia Cavalry, Federal. At least that is what was published in Hardesty's. If you could verify or deny I would certainly appreciate the information. If you find any other person's with the name Bias, Byus, or Byas I would appreciate any info given, unless it is extensive, then just names would be nice. I have a "Bias-Byus-Byas Family" repository site and would post the info to it. The only other family member that I am aware of that may have been there would have been HENRY BIAS, but he was on the Gray side, so I do not know if your records include any Confederate listings. Thanks again. Carrie Bias Hoffert
Irene: The companies of the 28th VA Volunteer Infantry Regiment had companies with ties to & organized in Craig, Botetourt, Bedford & Roanoke Counties of VA. Thanks for the query. Sincerely, Mike Peters npeters102@aol.com
Becky: No John Jefferson Moran listed. But I do find a William Moran listed in the following manner: Moran, William: Enl. 17 April 1862 at Norfolk; shot in the right arm; died of his wounds at General Hospital #1 at Richmond 30 July 1863. William Moran was a member of the 57th VA Volunteer Infantry Regiment, Company "B" -- the Franklin Fire Eaters. Thanks for the query. Sincerely, Mike Peters npeters102@aol.com
Rob: Welcome to the discussion. There is a James R. Hill mentioned as member of Company "C" (AKA Franklin Fire Eaters) of the 57th VA Voluntary Infantry Regiment. His listing is as follows: Hill, James R.: (5th Sgt.): Enl. 7 July 11861 at Long Branch. Thanks for the query. Sincerely, Mike Peters npeters102@aol.com
My wife is a researcher of the Teal/Teele/Teel surname. In "Nothing But Glory -- Pickett's Division at Gettysburg," by Kathy Georg Harrison & John W. Busey, there is mention of a Josiah W. Teel in Company "B" of the 24th VA Voluntary Regiment. His info is as follows: Teel, Josiah W.: The company initially reports him as missing in action and subsequently as "supposed killed" but there are no Federal records concerning him; killed. Company "B" was organized at Gogginsville & Rocky Mount, Franklin County, VA 25 April 1861. Are there any researchers of the Teel/Teele/Teal surname that could identify Josiah W. Teel? Thank you in advance for any information or guidance. I look forward to hearing from you. Sincerely, Mike Peters npeters102@aol.com
Fran: Thank you for the clarification on Wiley Doss. That explains his absence at Gettysburg on July 1-3 1863. He was not enlisted at the time. Thanks for your help. Sincerely, Mike Peters npeters102@aol.com
I find Wiley Doss, 38, cooper, born in Franklin County, enlisted 5/1/62 in Norfolk Co. C, discharged 5/25/62, 5 ft 11 in, sallow complexion, dark hair, grey eyes. Also: Wiley P. Doss, enlisted 11/15/63 in Rocky Mount in Co G, Deserted 1/21/64, rejoined 6/17/64, deserted 6/26/64 near Winchester, Adm. Chimborazo 12/10/64 with GSW (gun shot wound), shoulder, died 6 Jan 1865.
