    1. Re: [VAFRANKL] Look-ups
    2. Sarah: Good afternoon & welcome to our discussion. There are none of the Allen surname, with ties to Franklin or Floyd Counties of VA, found in "Nothing But Glory -- Pickett's Division at Gettysburg," by Kathy Georg Harrison & John W. Busey. There are three men named Trail who are listed in Companies formed from members of Franklin County, VA. In Company "C," AKA Franklin Fire Eaters, of the 57th VA Volunteer Infantry Regiment, we find the following information: Trail, Creed V.: Enl. 15 March 1863 at Fort Powhatan: AWOL 4 August through 19 September 1863. Trail, William V.: Enl. 15 March 1862 at Long Branch; (27 in 1865); farmer; born in Franklin County; shot in the left thigh fracturing the femur, and captured; exchanged from Chester Hospital 23 September 1863. In Company "D" of the 24th VA Volunteer Infantry Regiment is found the following: Trail, Daniel M.: Enl. 1 October 1862 at Winchester; AWOL 15 August 1863 There is a singular listing for Hambrick found under the heading of "Field and Staff" for the 24th VA Volunteer Infantry Regiment. His information is as follows: "Hambrick, Joseph Adam (Major): Born in Franklin County, VA 17 April 1833; graduated VMI in 1857; University of Virginia graduate; lawyer; enl. 23 May 1861 at Lynchburg as Captain of Company B; promoted to Major 9 April 1863; slightly wounded during the cannonade; his horse (a bay) was killed at Gettysburg and appraised at $550 for which Major Hambrick was reimbursed after the battle." I hope you find this information useful Sincerely, Mike Peters npeters102@aol.com

    1. [VAFRANKL] Franklin "Fire Eaters"
    2. Cousins & Friends: >From a cousin & Franklin County researcher comes the following re: the possible meaning of "fire eater:" "As for the 'Fire eaters' name - I know that I read somewhere that this name came from the division's propensity to close rapidly on the enemy position such that they were at very close range when the first volley of fire came -- such that they were close enough to eat the fire from the black powder muzzle loading guns." As always, I look forward to reading your comments. Sincerely, Mike Peters npeters102@aol.com

    1. [VAFRANKL] James Radford Sr In Franklin County VA
    2. Hate to bring the Radfords up again. But I was wondering the James Radford that is talked about in the Dr. Woods book, other then the book stating he was born near Jamestown, has anyone been able to find out where he really came from or his parents? I have seen him linked to the Redford (Radford) of Henrico County, VA and Goochland, VA and others. I have also seen him married to a Mary? Does anyone know were the name Mary could have been link to him as a wife? The only thing I can figure out is on the 1850 census there is a Mary with James Radford, Sr. The census shows James at 82 and if the census is right it shows her at 20. Could this be a daughter or granddaughter taking care of him? I have recently purchased the book Descendants of Francis Redford Emigrant to America 1635 By Frances June Redford Reid copyright in 1990. It starts out on the Redford (Radford) of Henrico County, VA. It does not fallow all the lines but I have not been able to make a connection from this book as of yet. From what I have read so far I don't think it is in here either. I also have the book Cockes and Cousins Volume II Descendants of Thomas Cocke 1639-1679 By Virginia Webb Cocke Copyright in 1974. I have not been able to connect here either (there are Radfords in this Book). My next step is to pull all the Radfords off the census and Tax list for VA and start tracing them from there, or can someone give me a short cut. By the way to some of you I had to change my email address from lorgar12@aol.com to Thompradf@aol.com. Any Help at all will be greatly appreciated. Lorraine Smith

    1. [VAFRANKL] Franklin Fire Eaters
    2. Timothy Adams
    3. Mike, I went tripping about the Internet looking for an explanation for the name Franklin Fire-eaters...I took this clip from a website...I think this will shed light to why they were name as such......those with contrary opinions are free to express their thoughts...thanks..Tim In the early 1850s, northerners and southerners alike used the term fire-eater to describe anyone whose views were clearly outside the political mainstream. Eventually, though, the word came to be most closely identified with those southerners who were staunch and unyielding advocates of secession.
