Dottie, I have a Confederate ancestor from Franklin County, VA, but I can not find out what unit he belonged to. His name is Samuel Puckett. He and his brother Jacob Puckett died of smallpox in April of 1862 (just a couple days a part) in Norfolk, VA. His widow (Susan Snyder Puckett) and children moved to Tazewell County, VA by the 1870 census. By 1877 they were in Ross County, Ohio. All the children moved to Ohio except the oldest son, Thomas, who stayed in Tazewell County, VA. By 1897 Susan was back in Tazewell County, VA because she had applied for a widows pension. The pension does now mention what unit he belonged to. I would assume that it would one of the Franklin or Roanoke County companies. They lived on the Franklin/Roanoke line on Bent Mountain. Does anyone have any information on Samuel Puckett. I had heard that there were entire units wiped out by the smallpox and I believe on the Franklin county units was also. I would appreciate some information before I make a trip to Rocky Mount for research. Are the death records indexed at the Franklin County Courthouse or Historical Society? If not, are they available to be searched on microfilm? Are the land and probate records indexed? Thanks Anne

List Viewers My ex-mother-in-law's name is Madge Louise 'Tyler' Swepston (born: 1921 in Talcott, Summers Co., West Virginia). Her father's name was William Daniel Tyler, and her mother's name was ADDIE BOWES (b. 12-04-1891 and d. 07-15-1970). Addie had a twin sister named DALE BOWES, who lived in Florida for some time in her later years. I don't know if there were other siblings. Addie lived in Talcott, Summers County, West Virginia in the 1920 census with William Tyler and their first three oldest daughters, Evelyn, Polly Christine, and Norma. All three were born after 1915. However, I cannot find her in any census before that time, (though her husband William is in several) and must assume that she may have lived in another county or state. I have Addie's parents listed as Howard Bowes (no dates) and Martha (no maiden name or dates). In the 1920 census, Addie's mother is listed as being born in West Virginia and her father in Pennsylvania. I have not found them in the Summers County census either. Unfortunately, that is all the information I have. Any help you can give on this family would be greatly appreciated. Vicki Swepston katie7@bright.net
