Re: my posting of 3/4/02; just in case INNES researchers might have a clue to the father of Owen HUNT, here's an excerpt from the will of Col. Hugh Innes of Franklin Co. written 1790, proved 1797. "To Sarah TURLEY, during her natural life - the use of my Negro girl Mira, & at her death, she and her increase to return to my estate, to be divided as my former Negroes are or were. I also give Sarah a cow and calf, a sow & pigs, a horse worth 15 £, and provision to last for 1 year after she leaves this house, at the discretion of my executors." (Sarah is mentioned elsewhere) Col. Innes' will was witnessed by Owen Hunt. I think Sarah (Innes) Turley was the wife of Peter Turley of Henry Co. who made his will in 1782, & named his wife Sarah and son-in-law Owen Hunt. The excerpt from Col. Innes' will suggests to me that his daughter Sarah Turley was widow of Peter; that she lived in her father's home in 1790. Col.. Innes didn't mention any Turley grandchildren. Maybe somebody who knows about INNES & TURLEY, also knows about Owen HUNT?? I can hope, can't I ? Bill, Fairport
Hello, Not to long ago a lady sent me some copys of pages from the PPT list for 1820 Franklin county but did not send me the meaning for all the columes. Does anyone know where i can find out what the info means? Appreciate the help...Katie
Katie, In reply to your question regarding the 1820 Personal Property Tax List, my listing of the columns varies according to which district is involved. For Jesse Prunty's District, the headings are as follows: Col. Heading 1 Date of Receiving List 2 Names of Owners 3 Whites over 16 years old 4 Slaves over 16 years old 5 Slaves over 12 & under 16 years old 6 Horses 7 Stud Horses 8 Rate of the Season (referring to stud horses) 9 2 wheel riding carriages with the harness not exceeding $100 10 2 wheel riding carriages with the harness exceeding $100 11 Pheatons & stage waggons with the harness not exceeding $200 12 Pheatons & stage waggons with the harness exceeding $200 13 Other carriages with the harness not exceeding $300 14 Other carriages with the harness exceeding $300 15 Tax in $ & cts 16 [Blank heading, but probably for "remarks"] For Moses Greer's District, the headings are as follows: Col. Heading 1 Date of Receiving Lists from individuals 2 Persons Names chargeable with the tax 3 White Males 16 years of age 4 No of Slaves over 16 years of age 5 No of Slaves above 12 & under 16 years of age 6 No of Horses 7 No of Stud Horses 8 Rate per Season (referring to stud horses) 9 2 wheel riding carriages not exceeding in value $100 10 2 wheel riding carriages exceeding in value $100 11 Pheatons & stage waggons not exceeding in value $200 12 Pheatons & stage waggons exceeding in value $200 13 Clocks [should this be "other carriages"?] not exceeding in value $300 14 Clocks exceeding in vlaue $300 15 Total Amount of Tax 16 Proof Hope this is of help to you. Best wishes, Robert N. Am looking for info on Haden H. Williams' murder in Oct. 1878 in Franklin County. Haden was first son of James Henry & Clarissa Richards Williams & was born about 1845 in Adney Gap. I haven't been able to look up any court records, so any help would be appreciated.
Can anyone help me find the father of an OWEN HUNT of Franklin County? (and/or his mother for that matter!) Owen Hunt was probably born by 1759 or earlier - don't know where. He was married, I think, to Jane Turley dau. of Peter Turley of Henry Co. and was named as son-in-law by Peter in his Henry County will 6 Oct. 1781, proved 28 Feb. 1782. Owen was nominated as an Executor along with Sarah Turley, wife of Peter. Owen Hunt appears on a number of Franklin Co. records incl. tax lists and also in some deeds past 1800. A couple of deeds imply a connection of some kind to Spencer Clack and also to an Edwards family. Owen Hunt wrote his Franklin County will Dec. 21, 1832; proved Feb. 4, 1833. I have copy of his will. [Will Book 3, pp. 520, 521] In his will, Owen Hunt did not mention a wife. He named children as John W. Hunt, Daniel B. Hunt, Charles T. (Turley) Hunt; one grandson Owen E. Hunt, son of Daniel B. Hunt. No daughters named. A couple of past family researchers have thought Owen Hunt was probably son of a Thomas Hunt who was in Franklin County 1787-c1789, but no reasons were given and there is no known documentation to prove a relationship. Any answers or clues will be very much appreciated. Bill Hunt, Fairport
I sincerely hope someone can help me. I have two deeds of land given to John Robinson/Robertson in 1779 &1782. The land is on BLACKWATER RIVER, DEEP CREEK , MUDDY CREEK & PIGG RIVER. Can anyone locate these places? One deed is listed as "Pittsylvanis now Henry Co. on Pigg River". The other also Pittsylvania on both sides of Long Branch of Sycamore Creek, land near Thomas Robertson's land. My John's father was Thomas, so I am trying to place where John lived before he went to NC. Thank you Margaret Heinek

Dick; Have you also consulted records of Quaker meetings? A Cedar Creek MM was established 1721 in Caroline vicinity according to Hinshaw. There were other MM's not far, including Caroline MM estab. 1738. In vicinity of Bedford there are instances of Turner & Pollard which appear from time to time in the Quaker Minutes. I haven't spent any time on them. If John Turner actually arrived in VA ca 1720, I'm observing he must have had a reason to travel so far inland to a less settled area such as the Caroline area, and likely was there even before Caroline Co. was created in 1728. In other words, did he have a destination in mind on arrival? I admire your persistence. FYI: c205 entries for TURNER appear in the index to "The Vestry Book & Register of St. Peter's Parish, New Kent and James City Counties, Virginia, 1684-1786". Author was the renowned C. G. Chamberlayne, originally published 1937. My copy is a 1997 reprint by the Library of Virginia, 840 pages. Many entries will prove birth, spouse, death, land ownership. Turner names are John, James, Caleb, Henry, George, Waddey, William, Nathaniel, Charles, Elizabeth, Dorothy, Susanna, plus many more & often repeated. Hundreds of surnames in this book appear in early Lunenburg, Bedford, etc. Several subscribers to Franklin list have Turner ancestors and are actively searching. Two of the most active happen to be away from home right now, so keep subscribing. I don't have any Turners in my family tree that I know of... at least not in 5 or 6 generations prior to my parents. One thing I've learned is that there were several men named James Turner who were living in the Lunenburg-Bedford-Campbell-Henry-Franklin geography at the same time. Some were Quakers. They're most confusing! Sorry I don't have time for detailed look-ups, but thought this source might be important for those who've never heard of it. Regards, Bill, Fairport
Sometime ago, i received this. I failed to post to my (FTM) Turner line the Person who was so kind to send it. I apologise for that. But at any rate, Thank you. Wit: Samuel Crutchfield, John Hunter, Richard (x) Stone. Sec. for exors: Peter Saunders and Robert Stockton.
Lunenburg County VA Land Patents include 3 to Shadrach Turner: 8/10/1759. 104 acres south side Butterham Town Creek 8/10/1759. 400 acres north side Pig River 8/10/1759. 152 acres both sides Great Cherrystone Creek, adjoining Richard Parsons, Noel Burton. The patents can be found and viewed on the LVA web. Those would have been granted by George III I suppose. I didn't look up the water courses, but Lunenburg was the main parent of Bedford County etc. I'd be on the look out for evidence of two generations of Shadrach Turners just to be broad minded. I also saw a Meshach Turner in an early Lunenburg Court Order Book. That reminded me of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego Hale/Hail who lived in Bedford in the early days. Bill, Fairport
Dick; yes name of Shadrack(sic) Turner is among the list from petition of 27 Oct. 1785 from residents of Henry County. James Turner, William Turner, are on the same list. These petitions are in loose files somewhere in Library of VA. My source is p. 192, "The Virginia Genealogist", Vol. 24, 1980, John Frederick Dorman, Editor. In 1989 a cousin of mine went to LVA and persisted until he found (& was allowed to make copies of) Bedford petitions which had the name of Hunt on them. Some petitions have original signatures but other papers are just copies all in the same hand. Franklin County was formed in 1786 from Bedford and a part of Henry.... which made some of the petitioners happy. There are several histories of Franklin but the only one I've read is the Bicentennial volume by John S. Salmon et al. As you would expect, it covers Bedford's earliest days, which includes Campbell County too. Somebody on this Franklin web will most certainly tell you if Shadrach is in there. I sure don't know & don't remember. But the book is in the Historical Society and I'd assume the Library has it too. Hope this helps you get started. Bill: My John was born about 1740 in VA adn died before 1835 in NC. It appears he married about 1760, do not know county. It MAY have been Goochland???? Children: Susannah b- 1765/70 m- Martin Woody Sarah b- 1775-80 m- Henry Rowland/Roland George b- 1776 m- Susannah Woody Edward b- 1780 m??? Mary b- 1780-85 m- Wyatt Woody John went to NC in 1792 and returned to VA in 1798 to marry "childhood sweetheart" Susannah Woody. I have a Chancery Suit that was filed by John's siblings, which names the siblings and their children with married names. This was filed 1835 and names John deceased. That is the only info on his death, don't know where, but believe he died in NC. Any one have land deeds from about 1775-85? Apreciate any info and I will be glad to share my research. Margaret
Shadrach Turner b abt. 1719 son of John Turner and Elizabeth ( NEED Maiden Name) is md to Ann Hill. i know not the parents of Ann or her dates. If anyone has this info, please share. Rena
Bill It is my understanding the Shadrach Turner was instrumental in bringing about the founding of Franklin Couny. Would he be among the 400 or so names you reference? If so, what is the reference and would it likely be in the Henry or Franklin County Libraries? Any other leads on Shadrach Turner's Ancesters would be appreciated. Thanks, Dick Stabnow
Margaret, if you have an idea how old your John was, consider that most men with military service during the Revolution were born by 1764. You say John had a 16 yr old by 1789, so no doubt born before 1764 and probably by 1755 or earlier. Well, if dates are in the ball park John could have been married ca 1777. If he'd lived in that exact area some years before 1786 then he would have been in Bedford or Henry. One way to search for names of wives is to find deeds from husband & wife, when the wife is named & signs because she was then relinquishing her dower rights to a specific tract of land. Many people have hit pay dirt that way. Of course finding such a deed proves only that the man had a wife by that name on that date. All by itself it wouldn't prove his wife on that date was his one & only and the mother of all his known children. You'd need other records to nail it. Oct. 17, 1785, there was a Petition from residents of Henry Co. asking for a division of Bedford to form Franklin. Three of abt 400 names were John Roberson, George Roberson, Richard Roberson. Martain Woody signed a similar petition 27 Oct. 1785 as a resident of Bedford Co. south of the Staunton River also asking for Bedford to be divided. So, if those were your folks, you could search for Bedford & Henry deeds before Franklin existed, and then also search Franklin deeds 1786-'89 to see if your John sold land before moving & so forth and etc. Maybe some folks reading this have already collected deeds which will help or have other ideas for you. I do not have any stories of my ancestors from Franklin Co., except my John Robinson, son of Thomas Robinson and Jane Legrand, left the area in 1789 or so with his two sons, George a 16 yr old , and son, Edward. There were 3 daughters left in the area, Susannah who married Martin Woody, Mary who married Wyatt Woody and Sarah who married Henry Rowland/Roland. George returned to Franklin Co. in late 1790s to marry "his childhood sweetheart" Susannah Woody. All of the families, except Susannah and Martin Woody, went to NC and stayed there. All of the Woodys were children of Henry Woody and Susannah Martin. We know John was dead by 1834, but no ideas when he died. If anyone has any idea of how to go about getting the name of John's wife, I would appreciate hearing from you. WE really do not know who Edward married, except in a later census in NC a lady is named, as Granny Rice. In all of the research I have done, I can not find the name of John's wife, and mother of the children. She probably was dead by time John went into NC. John was educated, as well as was his children, as notes were left in NC. I imagine John was in the Revolutionary War, but can not find records that would help, as we do not know his wife's name.
