Hi Anne, I have an unfinished manuscript of Franklin County Post Offices from the beginning of the County to the present day (they are all listed but the introduction is not completed yet) but it does not list a Parkersburg. That doesn't mean it didn't exist though, just might be harder to find. 2. Carolyn - My congratulations to you on having turned up so many of your female ancestors. I am so tired of having to list a male with wife unknown on my pedigree sheets. Who bore all those children so proudly listed? The mother deserves to be known also! BTW, where is Runnet Bag Creek? The names you listed are so familiar to me. Or maybe I have been prowling around in Franklin County genealogy too long. Kay Morris

    3. No, Dan, I'm sorry. My great-grandmother Rachel Anglin RICHARDS was the daughter of Simpson RICHARDS and Nancy VEST, born October 9, 1836, probably in Floyd CoVA, died January 28, 1923 in Floyd CoVA. She m. Charles Richard PETERS November 22, 1853, in Floyd CoVA. I have no leads at all on where my RICHARDSes are from. Simpson is the only one I have been able to connect to, and I haven't been able to find his parents or siblings... got any ideas? 1. DRAKE family or families of Franklin County
    2. Need help in finding information concerning DRAKE family/families that lived in Franklin County in the early 1800s. John and Levicy Drake had several children, one of which is believe to be named Archibald. In the Marriage Bonds of Franklin County, Virginia 1786 - 1858, page 126, Archibald Drake witnessed a marriage record for Daniel James and Mary Harmon, daughter of John and Levicy Drake, August 5th, 1801. I would like to find info concerning this Drake family. I have tried the census records, but I either can't read the records or their names don't appear. Does anyone have access to the Franklin County tax records? Any help or assistance of any kind will be greatly appreciated. Thank you, Harold in Florida

    3. Since there are so many descendants of William ALLEN and Susannah SMITH, I thought someone might like this transcription. Thanks to Beverly Merritt for finding this among many dozens of other deeds for me. Franklin County Deed Book 32, Page 313 Allen, Wm. Sr. Heirs/Allen M.J. This Deed made this 11th day of November 1876 between Martha Jane Allen of the County of Franklin state of Virginia of the one part and Sarah Martin and Susan Moore, Francis Thompson, Daniel Allen, Mary J. Allen the wife of William Allen Jr. deceased, the heirs of Elizebeth Trail Deceased, the heirs of Ruth Greeley Deceased, Mary Rakes, Rachel Underwood, the same being heirs and legatees of William Allen Sr. Deceased of the other part. I Martha Jane Allen do herby give Devise and bequeath two thirds of the real estate and two thirds of the personal property unto said heirs During the period of my natural lifetime that was willed to me by said William Allen Sr. Deceased except one cow, one bed and bedding, one spinning wheel, one skillet, one pot, one tea kettle, five chairs, one loom, one pitcher, 8 plates. I Martha Jane Allen do hereby covenant and agree to and with the said heirs and Legatees do warrant and defend a good and Lawful title to said Real estate and personal property except the exceptions made therin to said heirs During the period of my Natural Lifetime given under my hand and seal this the 11 day November 1876. Martha J. x Allen SEAL County of Franklin State of Virginia to wit I Jacob Shively a Justice of the Peace for the County aforesaid in state of Virginia do certify that Martha Jane Allen whose name is signed to the writing here to annexed ?bearin? on the day of November 1876 has acknowledged the same before me in said County aforesaid given under my hand this the 11th day of November 1876. Jacob Shiveley J.P. In Franklin County Court Clerks Office the 28th day of March 1877. This deed from Martha J. Allen to Sarah Martin, Susan Moore, Francis Thompson, Daniel Allen, Mary J. Allen the wife of William Allen Jr. Deceased the heirs of Elizabeth Trail Deceased the heirs of Ruth Greeley Deceased, Mary Rakes, Rachel Underwood was exhibited in said office and admitted to record. Teste Jas. J. Carper C.F.C. Q: What does this deed, combined with census info, Franklin Co. marriage bonds, World Family Tree from Sandra Boyd and the Floyd Male Marriage index tell me? A: William Allen (Son of William Allen who married Rachel E.) and Susannah Smith (married 10 Mar 1812 in Franklin County) were both alive in the 1870 FrCoVA census. They were surrounded by all of their children and grandchildren. William was 80, Susan was 76. Susan died before 1872, because William Allen remarries over in Floyd to Martha Jane Turner Boyd. She was previously married in 1851,to Washington H. Boyd and had 6 children between 1852 and 1862. Martha Jane was born around 1834, so she was 38 years old in 1872 when she marries William Allen, approximately age 82. He was about 44 years older than her. He writes a will in 1874 and from the above transcribed deed, he is gone by 1876. So, they were married 2 to 3 years, and deservedly so, she receives a third of his estate. The best part is that this deed gives us a list of his children and a clue as to when some of them died.: Sarah Martin Susan Moore Francis Thompson Daniel Allen Mary J. Allen the wife of William Allen Jr. deceased the heirs of Elizabeth Trail Deceased the heirs of Ruth Greeley Deceased Mary Rakes Rachel Underwood My dad is 85 years old and has had more parts fixed than a broken down DeSoto. If my mom goes first, he better not find a 38 year old widow! Linda Jo Groton, MA

    2. Hello All, Regarding the census, there is a great book, I have - somewhere (either it was written by Donald Lines Jacobus or it often quotes him) I will try to look for it for all of you who do not know about it. Tt tells all the horrors of census takers. There is one case where the census taker took his page/pages? home to work on - his wife served soup (as best I can recall) and he spilled hot liquid on the paper and had to reconstruct from memory. Itmay have only been one page (hopefully) but it was probably the page I needed.....lol When my husband's grandmother was alive in 1969 (age 92) and I was a new wife..trying to do genealogy...I asked where she lived in 1900 because I could not find them on the census. She stated Velma, OK. "I said ,(dumb, me) "no you weren't you were not in the census record." This little 92 year old woman flew in to a rage...and made a believer out of me..... it always brings a smile to my face when people think the census should be a document rather than a tool. I will try to find that book, it is priceless Carla

    3. Hi Bob, Thank you. What you found in the census records also applies to the birth records for Franklin County (and I'm sure other records and counties as well). A copy was sent to Richmond each year and the microfilm information from the Bureau of Vital Statistics is quite often very different from the microfilm found at the County level. I was lucky enough to get access to some original records in Franklin County, guess what? More differences. So several people could have a document or record and all disagree and all be right. Isn't this fun? 3. Thanks, Bob I believe there would be a lot of differences if the copies were done by hand. I know there were a lot of Hodges, but are you related to Willard Hodges in Glade Hill in the 1930's? My grandfather worked for him and he rented a house on his farm while my mom was a teenager. She can remember her dad running into the woods, getting away from the revenuers. He was a very fast runner, and he never got caught. I want to add a few comments about other Franklin County records. My uncle was born in Endicott in 1920. He served during WW2. When he went to get a passport in the 80's, he could not find a birth certificate on record. They had to write him a "note." My aunt told me that the midwives could deliver babies, but they could hardly spell. She has seen some of her siblings' birth certificates and the names were all wrong. Finally, I would like to say that I have been searching for Franklin County ancestors for about 2 years. I have decided that I am related to every person who ever lived on Runnet Bag Creek. 3. A few more thoughts on the Franklin County census. I am most familiar with the Hodges, but here re a few things I can tell you. Two copies of the census were made. One was sent to Washington and the other was kept in the county. They are not always the same. Here is a family from the 1850 Census: 1850 Census, Franklin Co., Va., p. 183a, 1805/1796, Dec. 10, 1850 Elijah 52m farmer $200 real estate Joel m22 Achilles m16 Josiah m 15 Julia f14 Preston m12 Matilda F. f10 Martha f9 The list I compiled from the Census microfilm at the National Archives does not list Matilda at all, calls Josiah "Isaiah", calls Preston, 12, "William F., 10". So it may apy sometimes to check both. I found this out because the NSDAR chapter in Rockingham County, NC, found when they published the 1850 Census for Rockingham that there were significant differences. Next, of course people got left out, but other times, even in the same census, individuals and even families are listed more than once, and differently: Franklin Co. 1850 Census 95/95: Peyton Hodges 65 Elizabeth 52 Elizabeth 14 Also Franklin Co. 1850 Census 1732/1725 Peyton Hodges65 Elizabeth 60 Wiatt 19 Harriett 17 Elizabeth 15 Lewis Hodges is listed in the 1860 Census in the poorhouse, age 84, but according to federal pension records, he died in 1855. I think the explanation for that is the following. He was listed in 1850 as age 80. He was 84 when he died. I think the census taker probably copied the names off a list of persons in the poorhouse and didn't realize he had died. This sin't a census record, but how about Landon Hodges' reporting of his wife's death? Molitia Hodges d. May 3, 1887 FC of epileptic. Age 43 years, d. Moses & C. Davis. Sp. Landin Hodges. Landin Hodges reported. Litia Hodges d. May 11, 1888 FC of burned. Age 45 years, d. Moses & Serrena Davis, b. FC. Sp. of Landon Hodges. Landon Hodges reported. Didn't he notice? There is no substitute for going over and over records and trying to correlate everything, but in some cases the data is just inexplicable. It was not in Franklin County, but I have my greatgrandmother's death certificate and her son, my grandfather's birth certificate. The latter shows he was born a little over a year after the former says she died. Bob Hodges

    2. Linda Jo Sheahan
    3. Bev, I am in total agreement that the census can only provide a first step to find ancestors. I believe that I was lucky with most of my searches because I learned early on that they all went by their middle names, especially in the late 1800's. The point that I am trying to make about Sarah Hall, is that although she is widely believed to be the daughter of Charles Trail, she may possibly be a daughter-in-law. Just to add to the census discrepancy discussion, my favorite character is Marvel, Marville, Mancil TRAIL. Not only was his name too hard, apparently Marvel never knew how old he was. 1850: age 45 1860: age 60 1870: age 70 1880: age 65 I wish that I could only gain 5 years over a 20 year period. Linda Jo Groton, MA -----Original Message----- From: Beverly Merritt [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Tuesday, March 29, 2005 6:53 AM To: [email protected] Subject: [VAFRANKL] Census records Dear Friends, I see a lot of confusion about census records and I don't claim to be an expert but I have had a lot of experience with them. Please remember a few things: Travel was difficult, mostly by horseback, and if the family was not home when the census-taker came by he would get his information from a neighbor, if possible. Or he might just not get any information at all. Not everyone was happy giving out information to strangers, especially from the government. And ages, etc. were not especially important at that time period. Many times the handwriting was so bad I thought the man had to be drunk and riding his horse as he wrote. Handwriting is very much subject to the interpretation of the transcriber. One of census books I transcribed had original pages missing, I don't recall which one. I could tell that for sure by the house and family numbers, as well as the page numbers. What I'm trying to say, if people aren't in a particular census it doesn't necessarily mean they were gone from the area. And the information contained in the census is not necessarily factual. Lots of luck, Beverly ==== VAFRANKL Mailing List ==== Please Visit the Franklin Co. Web Site http://www.rootsweb.com/~vafrankl/franklin.htm
