I see he has a son Hardy and a son Edward. Have you looked at any of the Hardeman (Hardy) Crews families? There were Crews in Bedford and Henry Counties, but the Hardeman I know of lived in person County, NC. Good Morning All You People! It's about time for us to start getting an approximate count of the people who will be coming to the picnic this year. Allison has a lot planned and we hope you all will be able to come. I need to know about how many each person will be bringing - doesn't have to be an exact count - we always plan for extra's. Please e-mail me privately at: [email protected] If you are new to the List and don't know about the Researcher's Picnic 2005 please read about it at: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~barbs/picnic_2005.html Thanks, Barb S. Cockerhams first came to Virginia in the early 1600s, either to Surry County or King William County. Since that time they have multiplied and spread throughout the states with Florida, Indiana, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, Texas and Virginia having the highest concentration of Cockerhams today. A genealogical study of the family becomes even more difficult with the variations of the Cockerham surname spelling to include Cochran, Cockerham, Cockern, Cockram, Cockran, Cockren, Cockrum. In an attempt to connect these surname lines and trace them back to early Virginia, many of us have gone up too many blind alleys and run into too many brick walls following false leads. We have exhausted many of the traditional sources and now is the time to employ a different tactic to achieve our goal. Many of us agree with Ann as she says, "Do the easy stuff first, then check to see if a DNA test could guide your research, before you spend lots of money on death certificates or lots of hours scrolling through microfilm records." It may well be that taking a DNA test will become the first step for many genealogical searches. Lorris & Vernon Cockerham are coordinating a DNA survey project, enabling us to establish linage and connections for the surname lines listed above and maybe even tracking the lines into England. If you are interested in adding new information to our family tree, get in touch with Lorris or Vernon "Butch" ASAP at the following addresses: Dr. Lorris G. Cockerham ([email protected]_ (mailto:[email protected]) ) Vernon R. Cockerham ([email protected]_ (mailto:[email protected]) ) Thanks! Lorris G. Linda Jo, Thanks for the info. It confirms what I've already been told by Sandy Graley. Nancy's eldest child, James B. Graley (not Terry, as you can see in the census of 1850) was not by John Terry, which explains his surname being Graley. There is a marriage in Montgomery Co. which we believe is him (though I believe his middle initial is different in the marriage record--R instead of B; and, if I remember correctly(without getting out my records), his first name is given as Jamie), and his parents are listed as Nancy Graley and William Trail (her uncle, it would seem). Hmmmmm. Looks interesting. It seems to be Nancy's son. So, John Terry married her when she already had a child. I have not dug into the Floyd record, though. Thanks for the feedback. Charles
Dear Charles, I took a look at the census for James & Sarah Trail Graley and for John Terry & Nancy Graley. I have no other documents, but I would guess that you are right. John & Nancy live near William Allen & Susannah in 1850 & 1860. William & Susannah's daughter, Ruth Allen married Thomas Graley (b. abt 1812) Thomas and Nancy were probably siblings. William & Susannah's daughter, Elizabeth married William Trail, who is most likely Sarah Trail's brother. Both are probably children of Thomas Trail. Also, it seems to fit the M.O. The Trail's and the Terry's were millers. They married later in life. Many members of these families migrated north to Mercer Co., West VA. I could always find marriage records for the Trail's and Allen's in either Floyd or Franklin. I didn't see anything for John Terry and Nancy Graley. Judging by the age of her oldest child in 1850, I would guess they would have been married around 1836. I know some other couples who I can't find any marriage record for around then. I think some were lost. Good luck. I will let you know if I find anything. Linda Jo Groton, MA [email protected] Subject: Shooting & Runnet Bag creek people Date: Sun, 3 Apr 2005 16:46:44 EDT Hey all, Are any of you Shooting and Runnet Bag Creek people familiar with any Graley, Trail, or Terry persons from ca. 1800-1860? These are my groups in that area. John Terry (b. Buckingham Co., ca. 1790) came to the area (ca.1830?) and married Nancy Graley (b. 1815). He was a blacksmith and miller (according to the census) and died in the 1860s. He was a lot older than she was. She moved with her children to Monroe Co. after he died, where they were living in 1870. I think he may have been the son of a Joseph Terry, Rev.War vet, but I have no documentation. I'm fairly certain she was the daughter of James Graley and Sarah Trail. Hi, Carrie, See MOORE, Mae DILLON, *DILLON/DILLION and Allied Families Volume III*, pp. 1699-1700, a family group sheet for Meshack PERDUE and wife Eleanor (Nellie) DILLON. Their youngest son Obediah, b. 1804, m1st Temperance DILLON, and m2nd Catherine DILLON, beside both is the notation, "dau. of William DILLON & wife Frances BLANKENSHIP." At the bottom of the page is a photo of the tombstone which states "IN MEMORY OF MASHACK PERDEW DIED 1836 AGED 80". At least, that's what I read it to be. There are other pages on which William and Frances BLANKENSHIP DILLON are mentioned. If you think it will be helpful, I'll go through the other pages and see if I find anything different, but not today... up to my ears! The three books were published posthumously within the last few years documenting Mae MOORE's research on the DILLON/DILLION families of Franklin CoVA. References are included. If you can't find a set to purchase, you might be able to borrow one from InterLibraryLoan through your local library (I'm assuming they don't have it on their shelves). I just found some archived messages from Neva & Carolyn discussing Nancy CANNADAY who married 1st, John WARD, and 2nd, James ALLEN. I happened to have a William ALLEN deed with all of their names in it, so I transcribed it. Don't know if it will be of any help, or if you already have it. I am stuck on a very old computer, so I don't know if this will come through looking like anything. I transcribed the deed from a photocopy. I did the best I could, not being an expert. I capitalized the last names so they would be easy to read. I tried not to change any spelling or punctuation, such as "[email protected]" this is the way it looked. Obviously, it means, "called." Barb Have you considered posting all of the records from your grandfather's calendar to the Franklin County website on Rootsweb.com. That way records would be available on an ongoing basis to anyone who is researching for connections in Franklin Co. Your records are quite unique, if you were to include a short note about the origin of the records, your grandfather's recording them on a calendar, most people would enjoy the insight into the times and methods used prior to the computer age. Those are the tidbits that really flesh out the names of the persons that many of us never had the opportunity to know much about. Just a thought, but it would be great if you have the time.
