The Yearouts own several miles of lake frontage on Smith Mt. Lake. I believe they have sold about all of it by now. Hi Dan - My family all trooped right to Callaway Co. and stayed there. I didn't know any Lavinders were there. I know that my Hodges family stayed in touch with quite a few Franklin Co. folks who moved to the same area. Are you aware of any Dickerson/Dickinson family that went to Callaway Co.? If you are following the Missouri River, Montgomery is the next county east of Callaway. Dan, Do you know why so many Franklin County folks went to Missouri? I know they heard of more fertile land, more opportunities for success than in a depressed area such as Franklin County was in at that time. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks, Donna
Smith Mountain Lake was built in the late 1960's. The land that covered my grandfather's tobacco farm was called Scrugg's, Virginia, I think it was covered by 1969-1970. If I come across any Association called Smith Mountain Lake, I will be happy to post any info I find. Many of the names you mentioned are familiar names. The Vernon Lynch I knew was, Dr. Vernon Lynch, rasied in Rocky Mount, Virginia and was killed in a car accident approximately 12-15 years ago. More later............................
Hi List, Does anyone have information on Smith Mountain Lake, Inc. The company was chartered in 1951 and existed until 1969. Some of the Franklin County residents were Guy Perdue, Vernon Lynch, G. B. Harrison, Claude Lumsden, J. F. Mason, Edward Booth, Gordon Preston and J. B. Allman. I think the intent was to provide recreational activities on about 1,000 acres of land. Anyone with info???? Thanks, Linda

Thank you, Dan, I didn't have a spouse for Missouri. Guess I didn't look hard enough. Richard Samuel Hodges who was 16 in the 1850 census is my great grandfather. Marshall Wingfield, Marriage Bonds of Franklin County Virginia 1786-1858, (Genealogical Publishing Co., Inc., Baltimore, MD,1973), p. 199, Elijah Salsbury and Keziah Ray married March 29, 1808 and Richard Pugh is recorded as standing surety for them. Same problem, same issues here. I'm looking for a clue as to shy Richard was involved with them in this way. I know that Richard's grandson, John Zachary Pugh, married a Louisa Wray in 1874, so it's highly likely the families knew each other. Just curious about the Salisbury and Wray families to understand Richard better. Thanks in advance for your help. Irene
I can rememory the general area where we were riding in the 1965 Plymouth Valiant when he told me the story, but I don't know if he meant that was where it happened. It was on that straight stretch, if your going toward Prillaman Switch the track is up high on the left and on the right there is a long field with one ranch style house right in the middle of it. There was another train wreck in Danville Va., in 1930, per the following: R.H. MILLS IS TRAIN VICTIM Is instanthy killed when car is struck by Train Number 136 Funeral services for R.H. Mills aged 38, superintendent of the Tudor Ice Plant, who was instantly killed yesterday morning at 8:30 o'clock when the Essex coach he was driving across the tracks at Stuart Street, Schoolfield, was struck broadside by Southern Passenger train No. 136, will be conducted from the Methodist church cemetery at Shuff, Virginia this afternoon at 4 o'clock. The procession will leave his former residence on Gray street at 1 o'clock and drive through the country. The passeger train was running down grade and completely demolished the car. Mill's skull was crushed and many bones broken. The two eye witnesses to the accident, J.R.Chattin and a Mrs. Jackson were both questioned by Magistrate R.S. Fitts, who made an immediate inquiry. Both witnesses said that Mills, going towards Stuart Street, stopped at the crossing to permit the Southbound Cresent Limited to pass and then drove across the tracks not knowing that the other northbound train was bearing down upon him. The automobile was squarely on the tracks and the impact was almost immediate, the car being caught by the pilot of the train and thrown into the air where it was literally torn to shreds, the remnants being strewn up and down the track the distance of sixty feet. The engineer brought the train to a stop as quickly as possible and the train remained at the scene until the body was removed. Mills had been in Danville for a year and a half coming here from Patrick County. He was engaged in checking up on his Schoolfield deliverymen and seeing that they were affording proper service. He is survived by his widow and three children. This Robert Mills is a branch on my Harris tree. Pat C. Johns in Va.
Here's another train wreck in Danville - http://www.talkeetna.com/Reviews/Old97/Old97.html "The Old 97, a Southern Railway train enroute to Spencer, N.C., derailed at Stillhouse Trestle near Danville, Virginia, on September 27, 1903, killing 11. The Floyd County Heritage CD is all but finished. It is about 300 pages of information mainly about Floyd County and it contains Births, Deaths, Cemetery, Obits and a Floyd County Census index for 1930. Maybe more, But that's all for now. It is a .PDF file and readable through Acrobe. It is searchable by name or phrase, you can Zoom in , Zoom out ..It will read to you. Barbara has a sample and said "This is COOL" I am not at liberty to put the price here, But I assure you it's worth twice that. What i'm interested in is knowing how many are interested, so know how many I'll need to bring to the Picnic. YOU MUST contact me off list for details. Barbara has been kind enough to let me do this, so let's not make her upset. Please Refer to "Floyd County Tidbits" in the Subject line to reserve the CD. Mail directly to me.
