Dr. Vernon Lynch (I think his father was Harrison) is the grandson of the Vernon Lynch I was referring to. I'm not related to the family and would have to check my notes on Franklin Co families to be sure. -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] To: [email protected] Sent: Tue, 3 May 2005 20:11:35 EDT Subject: Re: [VAFRANKL] Re: Vernon Lynch I thought Vernon Lynch was a doctor and was married to Gail Lynch? Donna: I don't know Franklin County well enough to answer that. When my mom was born, they had already moved into Roanoke. I think that my grandparents were even married in Roanoke. My grandfather (who died many years before I was born) was Samuel Archie Boothe. His father's name was William Burwell Boothe (m. Susan "Martha" Winfrey), and his grandpather was William Boothe (m. Lucinda Trail). Wm & Lucinda are in the 1850 census, but I don't have what region they're in. When I come down to Franklin County for vacation and go to Smith Mtn Lake, we pass some Boothe businesses near Halesford. My mom thinks that they are kin, but we're not sure. I'm not sure about Penhook, but that's because I don't know Franklin County. Hello all, I have been following your discussion on why FC people moved to MO. I am a Hall (Hezicaih and America line) and can trace my roots back to the 1750's (or so we think). What is funny about this is in 2000 I moved from Franklin CO. to Missouri. Why did I move? At the time land was $400 to $800 per acre for farm land. Land in FC and surronding areas at the time was $2500 to $10,000 per acre. Now the funniest part is I moved out for chaep land and ended up buying only 3 1/2 acres. I have since became ill and had to move to the city. (Springfield MO). For those poeple who live in FC, moving out here was like going back in time 20 years. The town we lived in was small. Everybody new everybody. The Sheriff knew everybody by their 1st name. Pretty amazing. We like it out here but we miss home also. John Hall
Hi All -- Sorry I was off line for a few days and now I'm plowing through all my List mail. I've saved the comments about Franklin Co. folks migrating from Franklin to MO with quite a few to Callaway, Montgomery, Warren, and St. Charles Counties. My apologies for expressing my opinion so late in the discussion. I had to laugh at Dan's reply to Donna that the Hodges went everywhere. I think we Hodges have itchy feet! Uncle Solomon's feet were the itchiest. His family now is found from Missouri to Texas. I've pondered this question for some time and discussed it with Callaway folks also. Callaway Co., MO was organized in 1820 and named after James Callaway who was killed in 1812 during an Indian raid. That name should ring a bell with Franklin Co. folks. All these counties listed above are on the Missouri River starting with St. Charles and working back to Callaway and on west. This area was sometimes referred to as the Boone's Lick Trail or Trace as it followed the Missouri River from Howard Co., MO back to St. Louis. Daniel's sons developed a salt company near Booneville, MO to supply salt to St. Louis. Daniel himself lived his last years and was buried along side his wife in Warren Co. Following the Missouri River across the state to the jumping off point for the West, one saw the fertile river valley and I'm sure many decided they had traveled far enough. If it was good enough for these famous Virginians, maybe it was good enough for them. As we have said, families and neighbors also traveled together or followed each other. This was the case for my Hodges who came to Callaway Co. Robert Solomon Hodges migrated in 1855 directly to Callaway Co. He worked there, as he did in FC, as a blacksmith. He wrote back to his family and my great-grandfather Richard Samuel Hodges, also a blacksmith in FC, joined him in 1878. Family lore says they traveled by train all the way. Both families settled in Cedar City across the river from the state capital in Jefferson City. That was good growing land for corn but one had to be prepared for being flooded out every few years. The corn fields are still there but the farmers now wisely live on higher land. Someone asked me (sorry I lost the email) why I asked about the Dickinson family. My great aunt was a newspaper clipper and saver. She had a number of clippings about the Samuel Dickinson family. One I read, probably from the Cedar City Chronicle said that "Mrs. Samuel Dickinson, of Wainwright, visited [at the home of] R. S. Hodges last week, returning to her home Sunday." They were probably close friends as I haven't found any Dickinsons in the extended family. But since Wainwright and Cedar City were far enough away in those days for a visit to be a week in length could mean that these may have been friends from the days in FC. I think the speculations in the posts following mine are all correct. There was free federal land in MO and after St. Louis points west were the frontier. One traveled to St. Louis and followed the Missouri River west along the Boone's Lick Trace. Before the Civil War, one was following the Callaways and Boones. After the war, came those seeking a new start. Happened with my family. I'm sure they were a reflection of many other families. Kay Morris <<Dan, Do you know why so many Franklin County folks went to Missouri? I know they heard of more fertile land, more opportunities for success than in a depressed area such as Franklin County was in at that time. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks, Donna>> >Dan Sez: >Hodges went everywhere it seems

Kathe, I owned an old farmhouse and some acreage around it. I haven't been back there in about 8-9 years, and at that time it wasn't an old car dump. I can't imagine anyone doing that to the property around there since my last visit to the area. We completely renovated the old farmhouse, which is located in a beautiful small open valley. The house set back off the road on the other side of Turner's Creek. This property is located 6 miles off Rt. 40 west of Ferrum College before you get to Crossroads. There are Turners in my line as well, dating around mid 1700 from Bedford Co. Donna p.s. Check out a map of Ferrum about 2 miles west of the college off Rt. 40 you'll see Turners Creek Rd. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Kathe Martin" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Monday, May 02, 2005 9:37 AM Subject: Re: [VAFRANKL] Peter Sigmon > Donna: > > Was your property near an old farmhouse where there is now an old car dump > ground? This sounds a lot like the bounty land awarded to Revolutionary War Veterans, except that land was in what is now West Virginia, Kentucky and Tennessee. The majority of it was in Kentucky. The goal was the same - combat trained men as a buffer between settlements and the frontier. In the RW, one had to serve at least 3 years to be eligible for the minimum amount of bounty land. Officers, depending on their rank, were entitled to more, and those who had served longer than 3 years were awarded more. This so-called "bounty land" was not granted outright to the veterans, but was instead awarded to them through a multi-step process beginning with a bounty land warrant. Bounty land warrants weren't automatically issued to every veteran who served. The veteran first had to apply for a warrant, and then, if the warrant was granted, he could use the warrant to apply for a land patent. The land patent is the document which granted him ownership of the land. Basically, the warrant is a piece of paper which states that, based on his service, the veteran is entitled to X number of acres in one of the bounty land districts set up for veterans of the War of 1812. These land districts were located on public domain lands in Arkansas, Illinois and Missouri. The warrants, themselves, were not delivered to the veterans; all the veteran actually received was a notification telling him that Warrant #XXX had been issued in his name and was on file in the General Land Office. Prior to 1842, if a veteran chose to redeem his warrant for land, he was required to choose land in one of the three states listed above. (After 1842, he could redeem his warrant for public lands in other states.) Warrants could be assigned or sold to other individuals. Benjamin Hibbard, an American public lands historian, believed that the government chose to set the land districts up in these frontier areas because they thought it would be really nifty to have a few thousand battle-hardened war veterans & their families acting as buffers between established settlements and the Native American population. For good or for ill, the veterans were too smart to fall for that one, and most chose to sell their patents to land speculators. So keep in mind that, even if your ancestor applied for a patent, he may never have set foot on his land. ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Saturday, April 30, 2005 3:17 PM Subject: [VAFRANKL] Re: Why Missouri > > In a message dated 4/30/2005 11:05:52 A.M.
