Sorry to be so late in getting to the point of Bill's message below, but there are apparently four or more HALE lines that ran through Franklin CoVA in the 1700s, rather than one big bunch. According to DNA tests run through Family Tree DNA, "my" Franklin County HALE line does not match with descendants of Joseph HALE who died and left a will in Patrick County in 1803, nor with descendants of Nicholas HALE who entered Jamestown in the early 1600s, nor with Lewis HALE who m. Mary BURWELL. Neither do their descendants match with each other. Among the men who were tested who do match "my line" to a close degree, we have no idea of how they relate to each other, or of their earlier ancestry. John Hale b. 1765 probably in Southwestern Virginia, later Franklin CoVA, is the earliest among the three, and we don't know of his origins. Somewhere, back in the mists of the ages, I have a memory of my father telling me that "our HALEs" came down from Pennsylvania... there were seven(?) brothers who traveled together. How accurate my memory is can be debated, but who knows? There could be some truth to the memory. Anyway, if you want more information about the DNA tests, go to http://www.familytreedna.com/public/hale/ I am forwarding this message to several other lists that I think might be interested. From what I have seen there are 2 sets of Martins ones that descended from The French Martins Jean Martin and the ones who descended from the English Martins which would be Joseph Martin who married a daughter of Nancy Ward beloved woman of the Cherokee. Many of the descendants of the Joseph Martin are on the final rolls.I am not sure if Matthew Martin died Franklin Co.VA descended from the Jean Martins that were french or the Martins that came from England.Gloria ~Wehali Usdi~<Look not at the Eyes but at the Soul> ----- Original Message ----- From: "Steve Jeppsen" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Friday, June 17, 2005 11:43 AM Subject: Re: [VAFRANKL] Jesse Martin will > As I have been trying to find my Martins, I have come across alot on Joseph > Martin. Marla, The information you sent yesterday was great. I have been studying it and trying to put it all together. As I was going through my notes I came across another will that I copied from the Franklin County Will Books for John Martin. It didn't help me much at the time, because John gave very few names. After the information you sent me however, I believe it is the will of John Martin husband of Nancy Spangler and son of John Martin, who died around 1813. The will was dated 28th May 1818. David Dickenson was one of the witnesses. The first part of the will is hard to make out, but refers to the selling of his slaves. Then it says "Secondly, as my wife has a Brothere and some other friends residing in the State of Georgia, it is probable she may have a desire to remove there or elsewhere, if that should be the case, it is my Will and Desire that the track of Land whereon I new reside may be sold and the money arising therfrom maybe approproated in any manneer that my Executors may think most beneficial to my family. Thirdly, It is wish that my Executors shall amke a talte to John Johnson for a small tract of land sold him upon his making payment for the same,....Lastly I appoint my friend John Burwll and Richard Taliaferro (?) of the above named County andState, likewise Andrew Malloy and John Houston of Morgan County Georgia my Executors. I have merely named the Gentlemen residing in Georgia as my Executors in c! ase my wife should remove from Virginia. If that should be thcase the executors there nust give a complete account to those ???in this state before the Estate ??? In the case that my wife should marry again and it should appear to my Executors that the property is in a fair way to be wasted, it is my wishe and desire that my Executors should sell off on third of the estate for her use and the balance be under the control of my Executors until my Children become of age or marry. It is my wish and desire that my Executors may ????portion of the property such as they may think the situation of the Estate may justify of my land shoulsd be sold as above specified. I herby give my Executors full power, to make complet and ful title to the purchaser. thereof. Signed John Martin 28th May 1818 Witness David Dickerson The will was proved in 1818. As I examined the evidence of the Robert Martins, I wonder if Robert Martin married to Susannah Robertson, is the son of James not Hugh. Since from their wills they both died in Franklin, I believe this is the Robert on the Tax List and the Census List. I propose that Robert Martin that married Susannah Ray is the son of Hugh and possibly removed to Georgia with him. If this is so, then my Susie was probably neither of the above. The stories handed down was that Mary Martin died leaving a small daughter Martha Ferguson who was raised my her grandmother Susie Martin of Franklin Virginia. JoAnn
My ancestor may be WILLIAM MARTIN with wife MARY, their child JOSEPH MARTIN with wife SUSANNAH CHILES seems to be parents of my SUSANNAH MARTIN b- c 1739 who was married to HENRY WOODY. Henry and Susannah were married in Goochland Co., VA. Is anyone tracing this line? I have some dates, but need better proof. Would like to correspond with them to fill in the gaps. Thanks, Margaret Heinek
