    2. Re: Genealogy Reports 1) First I recommend you confirm your current program will not generate the reports you desire. When I used to use Tree Maker 8 & 11, I would print two reports (not trees) that I kept in notebooks: Outline Descendant report summarizes names and years of birth & death. Good reference for family relationships. Genealogy report prints all data and notes that have been input for each individual, including sources. A much lengthier report, but all the details. 2) As I recall, the reports also gave you the option of indicating how many generations to print. Increase this number to be sure you get everything. The ability to print all generations is also dependent on the amount of memory in your computer, and how much is allocated for use by the program. See the FAQ section on Familytreemaker.com site for details on increasing (not sure if this is valid for older versions). 3) Consider upgrading to a more current version of Tree Maker (I think Ver. 16 is the most current one, and many improvements have been added since your Ver. 5, including new tree and report options). On EBay you can buy Deluxe edition under $20, or for under $30 can get Collector edition, which includes a free 1 year online search subscription to Ancestry.com. 4) If upgrading, be aware that anybody you want to share FTW files with must also have the current Tree Maker version. Without it, you can only share GEDCOM files, which lose all extraneous the notes and source details. 5) Regarding your desire to manipulate reports: With the desired report displayed on your screen, select File/Export Genealogy Report/To Plain Text. The resulting saved file can then be loaded into any word processor and edited as you desire (change text font, size, color, add photos, etc.) Just remember that any changes you make must be redone after you input new data into Tree Maker. -------------- Original message -------------- From: vafrankl-request@rootsweb.com > > > Today's Topics: > > 1. useful family trees? 3. May I add a caveat? I recently bought a new computer with the Vista operating system and the latest edition of Family Tree Maker will not run on it without taking it back to the store to "download some additional drivers." I was told it will be about six months before the compatible version will be out. If anyone has Vista or is contemplating buying a new computer, you might be well-advised to make sure it's compatible with your current programs. ----- Original Message ----- From: <vakendot@comcast.net> To: <vafrankl@rootsweb.com>; <vafrankl@rootsweb.com> Cc: <vafrankl-request@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, May 16, 2007 9:46 AM Subject: Re: [VAFRANKL] VAFRANKL Digest, Vol 2, Issue 97 > Re: Genealogy Reports > > 1) First I recommend you confirm your current program will not > generate the reports you desire. 3. Having a late grandfather from Franklin County, I've been following list activities for a couple years now. As this seems to be a pretty savvy list with regard to the practice of geneaology (except for me), perhaps you can offer some suggestions on what products are available to print out a nice useful family tree. What do I mean by that? I've been using Family Tree Maker 5 for a couple of years now; while it is a decent place to store information, the trees it produces for printout are pretty anemic. I need something that will put 10 generations on a tree - including abundant database information - that I can format to whatever page size I want without having older generations or vital info clipped off. Since I've reached the point where I can't remember it all anymore, it would be nice to have hard copies of trees on hand that actually say something I want to know and share it with others, rather than having to go into the database to look for it all (And I'm not so keen on the "kennel-club lists" either, if that was the recommendation). Is anyone familiar with an out-of-the-box product available that will do what I want? If there is some concern about promoting particular products on the listserv, feel free to contact me directly at charlietiller@hotmail.com . 1. [VAFRANKL] Brick Wall - Tabitha (Ray) Meador
    2. Virginia Kin
    3. Brick Wall Query: I am trying to prove the parents of Tabitha Ray (1817-1901). Her Franklin Co. marriage bond to Josephus Meador in 1843 was signed by James Ray and William Ray. William is identified as the uncle of Tabitha. My theory has been that Tabitha was the daughter of James Ray who died before Tabitha’s marriage and I think that the bond may have been signed by Tabitha’s brother, James Ray and her uncle, William Ray. It should be noted that Ray is sometimes spelled Wray in the records. I have a copy of a DAR application for James Ray, as well as his will, and there is no mention of a child named Tabitha in either document. (So this may be a different James Ray.) The application does not ask for the parents of the Revolutionary Soldier, so there are two possibilities: Possible father of James: Luke Ray lived in Bedford Co. He died by 1812. He married twice: Tabitha Willet and Sarah Murray. Administration of Luke’s estate names his children and includes sons, James, William and Simeon Ray, among others. It states: “Saml Hale adm of James Ray Dec’d, John Bartle admr of Simeon Ray dec’d” This document is dated 1843 (the year of Tabitha Ray’s marriage to Josephus Meador). It further states: “The children and heirs of James Ray deceased all believed to be infants and their names unknown.” (Research Note: Franklin Co. Chancery Court 1845-035. Plaintiff: Admr of Simeon Ray. Defendant: William Ray. Surnames include Meador.) Possible father of James: Moses Ray was a resident of Franklin Co. He married Elizabeth Morris, daughter of Daniel and Tabitha Morris of Bedford Co. They had 17 children, including James, William and Tabitha. Tabitha married Mr. Wright. Moses died in 1802. His will, which names the 17 children, was probated in October 1802 in Franklin Co. Possible brother of Tabitha Ray: James Ray, Jr. Listed in the 1870 Franklin Co. census with James Ray are Josephus, age 13, and Tabitha, age 9. Tabitha Ray's husband was named Josephus Meador. It seems likely that Tabitha’s brother would choose those names for his children. Tabitha and Josephus named one of their sons James and another William. James Wray Death Record: white male, farmer, died 4 Jan 1880 Franklin County of derangement, aged 65 yr, born in Franklin County, spouse of Susan Wray, Susan Wray spouse reported death. (born 1815 - note - Tabitha (Ray) Meador was born 1817) James was married to Susan Wimmer. Research Note: Elizah Wimmer, 18, F, W is living with the James and Susan Ray family at the 1870 census in Franklin Co., Virginia. Josephus Meador ( white male) (farmer) d 12 Oct 1873 Franklin Co of consumption, aged 51 yr 11 mo 3 da, b Franklin Co, sp of Tabitha Meador, Tabitha Meador wife reported. Source: Franklin County, Virginia Death Records, 1853-1896. Abstracted by Neil Hailey. In Josephus Meador’s will, it is stated: “First I give and bequeath unto my beloved wife Tabitha Meador the land known as Paine Track containing 154 acres to have and to hold as her money paid for the land, she is to have it during her natural life, to do as she thinks best to make a living.” So we see that Tabitha must have inherited money. I do not have any further details, other than the possibility of her being one of “infants with names unknown” in Luke Ray’s will. Any help in untangling this family would be greatly appreciated. I have been trying for years. I keep coming back and hoping to find clues. 1. Re: [VAFRANKL] Welcome new subscriber

    3. You have come to the right place to find incredible people to help you. I am researching descendants of Edward Cochran. My line is through his daughter, Lydia. Thanks in part to some wonderful people in Franklin County, I just completed my 88 year-old mother's DAR application through Lydia with 36 pages of documentation. The will of Edward in Franklin County was invaluable. Through that, I was able to find in Casey County, Kentucky, a 1823 document filed to settle Lydia's inheritance from her father. The document referenced Henry Pemberton and Lydia as husband and wife and Lydia, daughter of the late Edward. I was also able to find the marriage register for the next three generations: Henry & Lydia's son, Thomas Pemberton to Anne Lane on 04/12/1830; their daughter Malinda Pemberton to George Wilcher on 04/24/1854; and their son John T. Wilcher to Bettie F. Wilcher on 07/07/1892. Preston Kendrick Cochran was one of the first settlers in Casey County. I would be happy to share any of those documents if anyone is interested. To carry this further for anyone researching the Cochrans, we encountered four Cochran "cousins" in Emma's Restaurant in Liberty, Ky., while eating a late lunch and it seems we're related to at least half of the county. I was able to locate a Cochran male descendant who agree to participate in the Cockerham/Cockram/Cochran DNA surname project and the kit was mailed the next day. Results will be interesting and perhaps we can see how Edward might have been related to others. Thanks again for the help you all gave me. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Rena" <doreatr@rbnet.com> To: <vafrankl@rootsweb.com> Cc: <vapatric@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, April 29, 2007 11:24 AM Subject: [VAFRANKL] Welcome new subscriber > Syl Vaden <ed_syl_vaden@bellsouth.net> > > Please introduce yourself and tell us who you are researching. > > > Rena Worthen doreatr@rbnet.com > List adm. > http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~renaworthen/ > ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ > The SECOND Sunday in each month will set aside for a "Brick Wall" Roll > Call.
