Jeff, Will put the FTM report in the mail tomorrow but my printer is out of ink so cannot copy for you the photo of James H Harlow or the map from Bill Tiernan (this just isn't my day for mechanical gadgets!) and will be in DC tomorrow so will have to send the photo and map on TUES - Re Bessie Dudley - she married George Pace (the bad news - Fluvanna and Albemarle Co are LOADED with Paces! The good news - there are so many you might have good luck tracing their descendants!) and they had at least two children - Claude and Evelyn. Again, according to Bill Tiernan, Bessie and George ran a small store in the Cunningham community. And Cunningham always was and is small - doesn't have its own PO even - just a few square miles of "neighborhood" in the country - a crossroads really - If you want to hire someone to help with the research in the Fluvanna/Albemarle area, you might try Alice Owens at caddowens@juno.com. She might even do some work for free, if you only need a couple quick things from the Fluvanna clerk's office and it is on her way. I corresponded with her off and on about a mutual surname (Goodman) and even met her once when I was in Fluvanna clerk's office and she happened to be there. Seems very nice but I cant vouch for her work since I have never hired her. I also suggest you list your surname(s) on the Fluvanna genweb page at http://www.rootsweb.com/~vagenweb. This is a great Internet resource for info on Fluvanna co and its families and through it you can get info on the Fluvanna library hours (they actually have a nice little genealogy section for such a small place - almost exclusively devoted to Fluvanna genealogy and worth checking out. I found some neat things there related to the Hadens.) and info on the hours of the county clerk's office and what records they have there. Also, the Fluvanna Co Historical Society - onlyopen on Sundays I think but their publication has all kinds of info about the County and County families and the Fluvanna Library has all the back issues and indexes - I have found that fellow-researchers are usually good about helping and will even do lookups if they are going to a clerk's office or courthouse - for free. You can find them on the county lists - . check out : vaalbema-d@rootsweb.com vafluvan-l@rootsweb.com These are the county lists that people use to communicate info about familyand events in Fluvanna and Albemarle co's - you can get on the list and get their messages automatically via emailwhen the lists are distributed- worth it - I have found some info and leads that way - the membership to the lists is free... Through the Fluvanna genweb page you can also get to the Albemarle Co page and list your names there in case any of your relatives moved to that County (Charlottesville is in Albemarle.) You may already be familiar with the genweb system but if not you will see that every co in the nation has (or hopefully will have) a page for genealogy and the whole rootsweb network is a great resource. In checking the book "Fluvanna Co VA Death records 1853-1896" I find: Dudley, Rosa, L. (white Female) d. 3 Feb. 1884, of consumption, aged 21 yrs, d/o Ralph and Florilla Dudley, b. Fluv, brother reported. Thomas Dudley 's father was R.S. Dudley and his mother's name was something like Fonilla (I couldn't read her name clearly) - wonder if this Ralph and Florilla are the parents of your 2nd gr grandfather, Thomas Dudley...? The same book has an entry: Dudley, Jerry M (white male) [farmer] d. Aug 10, 1888 of malarial fever, aged 33 yr, s/o Ralph S and T Dudley, b. Fluvanna, T Dudley mother rept. Could be the authors of the book simply misread F for T and this is also part of your family...I've seen names spelled different ways or misspelled - it happens - if you go to Fluvanna Co yourself, the death records at the clerk's office would be worth checking out to see whether you can make out the names and initials here and make some connections or at least some guesses. Also, if you check the marriage records of some of these folks you can trace their parents and make connections. Now here's a good one: Dudley, Ralph S. (white male) [farmer] d. 9 May 1891 of consumption, aged 70 yrs, s/o Jacob and Patsy Dudley, b. Fluv. If you can prove that Ralph S is your 3rd gr grandfather, this one entry also gives you HIS parents, your 4th gr grandparents! Fluvanna Co also has copies of wills and estate administration papers (that's where I found the info about Amanda Tompkins having her property auctioned off after her husband Lancelot's death) - check these out to see if any of your relatives appear - wills esp can give info on children and relationships - Also deeds, although I have never used them - also at the clerk's office - I think the clerk's office also has some census records - starting in 1850, the census records include names and other info on household members - before that they only included the name of the H of H with other household members simply counted as numbers (ie, 3 white, 3 female) YES!!!! Found them!!! I just checked my cd of 1850 VA census and there they are - !! But in 1850 your Dudleys lived in Albemarle Co : Ralph S Dudley, aged 35, male, farmer, value of real estate owned = $5000 Sarah, 23,female Jane, 6 female Margaret, 4, female Thomas R, 3, male Leroy, 2, male William Hughes, 62, male, wheelwright Elijah Hughes, 22, male, laborer Lilburn Hughes, 18, male Malinda Hughes, 16, female John Dudley, 24, male, laborer Henry Eades, 23 ,male Your Thomas Dudley was born in Nov 1847 in Albemarle Co according to the 1900 census- I bet this is him! But then, who's this Sarah woman in the household if his mother was Fonilla? Unless Sarah died and Fonilla/Florilla was the stepmother...? If this Ralph S was 35 in 1850 (and mind you, the ages aren't always right, depending on who is giving the census taker the info - sometimes if no one was home the census taker went to the neighbors and took their opinions on ages, places of birth, etc.! And since many of these people were illiterate they might not always be clear themselves on just how old they or their relatives are...) he was born circa 1815....the Ralph S who died in 1891 of consumption (which is TB in case you didn't know) would have been born circa 1821 - the record doesn't say who reported his death - if it was a neighbor, he could have guessed at the age - could be your ancestor... Jeez, I hope I am not taking all the fun out of this for you - believe me, there will be PLENTY more for you to research on your own...just thought I'd help but hope this doesn't ruin the thrill of the hunt for you...it's just that I paid good money for these resources and want to be able to help others so they don't have to pay for them! Also I hope I amnot telling you things you already know about other genealogy resources, etc., (like the gen web pages, lists, etc.) - if so plse forgive my aggressive enthusiasm! I know I didn't give you a chance to get a word in edgewise when we spoke today - I am usually not so obnoxious, really...my apologies. Will send the FTM report tomorrow and the photocopies on TUES - best of luck to you in your research and let's keep in touch - Louise

Can you tell me where your John ADAMS family was from? I have two CLARKSON brothers, Benjamin and Joseph who settled in Fluvanna Co from Essex Co. Their parents were James CLARKSON and Mary ADAMS. James and Mary were married by Jessie Carter but I don't know where and have not been able to find her family. Possibly King and Queen Co where there was a Rev. Jessie Carter. Does anyone know of an old tavern in this county tbelonged many years ago to Giles Allegre? The name may be the Lafayette Tavern now. Would there be a chance that there would be a picture of this existing? Giles Allegre, Sr is my family line.
I'm trying to find Joseph H Turner - He was first listed in the Fluvanna Co., Va (Columbia) census in 1940 and lastly in 1970. He married Eliza Tucker Adams, dau of John Adams, II and Rebecca Tucker( of Powhatan Co) in 1834. They had two daughters that I know of, Harriet Wilmer Turner(my ggrandmother) and Jane Adams Turner. Someone emailed me that a Joseph H Turner had buried his mother and that her name was Mary Hart, but I have lost the email and can't substantiate it. I am very, very anxious to find the ancestors of Joseph H Turner. CAN ANYONE HELP ME???? ...........Jane Hughes Lomel
Wondered if someone with knowledge of estate settlements might be able to lead me in the right direction. In March 1838 the will of Micajah MANLEY of Fluvanna County was presented in court. In it he mentions bequeaths to "the children of my son, Hesakier, shall have an equal sher of what will be sold at my Sale". Hezekiah MANLEY died in Fluvanna Co. in 1834 (no probate record). His widow, Susan (BASS) MANLEY, married again in 1836 to William CURRIER. The names of Hezekiah's children are unknown, although I suspect they may have been Samuel MANLEY, b.1829 and Caroline MANLEY b. 1830, possibly others. In 1849 Caroline MANLEY married in Albemarle Co. to Shadrach BISHOP and at that time asked Shadrach to be her legal guardian, as she was an orphan over the age of 16 and had no guardian. My question is this - would there have been any documentation distributing the estate of Micajah MANLEY that would mention these "children" by name? Are there any other sources that I should be checking to help determine the names of these children? Any help/suggestions appreciated. Thanks. Steve in Ontario
Hi Sharon: Thanks for answering my query. Yes, I do have abit more information on Lucy and her family. Lucy E. McLAIN married William James CLEMENTS on 16 November 1871 at Fluvanna County, VA. The full entry reads: 16 November 1871, Fluvanna County, VA, Circuit Court, P.91, line 70 GROOM - Wm. J. CLEMENTS, white, age 21, single, born Fluvanna, son of Peter F. & Martha E. CLEMENTS, farmer BRIDE - Lucy E. McLAIN, white, age 22, single, born Fluvanna, dau. of M.G. & Elizth. McLAIN Minister - Wm. S. Parrish William's birth and death dates are taken from his Death Certificate #26164, recorded at Henrico Co. The information was supplied by his daughter, Mrs. Gertrude Childress. The Fluvanna Death records lists the death of Lucy CLEMENTS on 29 January 1876 - here is the entry: FLUVANNA COUNTY DEATH REGISTER, 1867-69 Page 49, Line 9 CLEMENTS, Lucy E., white, female, died 29 January 1876, died at Fluvanna, age 30 years, of childbirth, born at Fluvanna, parents Matt & Elizabeth McLain, consort of William J. Clements, informant - husband. Lucy's son, name unknown, died in Fluvanna in March 1876, age 2 months. She may have had twins in January 1876 when she died, as there was a daughter, Laura, who according to census information was born in Jan.1876 also. She was also the mother of William's daughters - Lelia G. (b1874) and Laura E. (b.Jan. 1876). My interest is actually through William's second wife, Lady Bugg Bishop. Would be interested in comparing notes on the McLAIN family - I'm also a MANLEY researcher (Tabitha MANLEY = Geroge McLAIN). JOHN AND THOMAS WINCHESTER were in GUILFORD COUNTY, NC maybe as early as 1768 or earlier. I am looking for any WINCHESTER that may have been in VIRGINIA prior to the date of 1768. I feel my Winchester family migrated from Virginia into North Carolina. Therefore, some 52 Counties list are being contacted in hopes someone has information on the WINCHESTER FAMILY in Virginia prior to 1768. Thank you, WARREN WINCHESTER

Hi Duncan researchers, In the Spring, 1999 issue of "The Bulletin" publication of the Fluvanna County Historical Society, # 67 p. 21 is an article called "The Peyton Saga" and written by Ellen Miyagawa deals with the will of bachelor John Peyton. John was living with a Mrs. Mary Duncan, who had seven children. Her children were John Duncan, Howell Lewis Langham Duncan, Robert Peyton Duncan (youngest, born c.1799), Nancy, Patty, Salley, and Betsey. Ms Miyagawa suggested that this Mary might be the wife of John Duncan, brother of George. John and George married daughters of Robert Hall. From the Will of Robert Hall. "WILL: PR 8 May 1760 St. Ann's Parish Richard Hall, wife Ann and children Elizabeth, John, Richard, Mary Trent, Ann Duncan, Jane Duncan, grandchild John Hall Trent, son-in-law, George Duncan, and John Duncan. Executor, wife Ann Hall, d. Elizabeth Hall and Thomas Tindall. Witness; Wm. Ballus, Thomas Ballow and Thomas Robinson." Here is the group sheet of John and Jane Duncan family. - ------------------------------------------------ (1) 1. John D. Duncan Birth Date: 23 Aug 1730 Birth Place: Glasgow, Scotland Death Date: 1807 Spouse: Jane Hall Spouse Father: Richard Hall (1704-1760) Spouse Mother: Ann Duncan Children: Lavinia "Viney"; Spicey; George B.; Claiborne; Elizabeth; Charles; Nancy; Vina; William; Wiatt; Wortley; Polly; John; Patsy; So I believe that Mary was the wife of William Duncan. Source is below. Annotations from "The Diary of Robert Rose" p. 245 Martin Duncan and his wife Mary were indentured servants of William Cabell. In 1741, Cabell brought a sixteen-gallon still from England for use at Warminster. Settler purchased "muscovy sugar" (unrefined brown sugar) from the West Indies, or made their own sugar. Robert Beverley, in 1705, described some of the process which began by "wounding the trunk of the tree and placing a receiver under the wound". The sap collected was boiled, and the reduced syrup ran into molds to form cakes. Diary of Robert Rose: Jan 26 1750/1 married George Duncan and Anne Hall of Albemarle Co. at the home of William CABELL's "Warminster". Married at Ballenger's Creek was cancel due to snow. George Duncan, who probably was a kinman of Martin Duncan, an indentured servant of Cabell Martin was married to Mary, also an indentured servant of William Cabell. Snow prevented Rose's attendance at the new Ballenger's Creek Church. William Cabell was a Physician. I believe that this William maybe the brother of John and George and that William's wife names Mary maybe the Mary in John Peyton's will. Does anyone have any information about William Duncan and his wife Mary? Michèle When answering, please leave original message along with all replies to jog my memory. Small irony here is that we have a Dover cousin (2000) who lives on a hill near Asheville overlooking these locations who is a descendant of Elijah Dover. Lindsey thinks he found the remnants of another home of Elijah's on another area of Turkey Creek. Also living in Ashville is a confirmed (my opinion) descendant of Fred & Jane Dover, born in Alabama, who told Lindsey his older family took him to this same area when he was a kid and told him their old Dover ancestors had lived there. I had already corresponded and talked to Harry Dover on the telephone ... mostly because we share close Alabama locations in the 1850's+. For us Buncombe cousins, this should be a big question. Harry and his family were not genealogists, they had their family lore. From the genealogy research, we're missing "any" Frederick Dover in 1840 Buncombe. He's back by 1850 (someone is). I suspect the 1840 Frederick Dover (& Margaret) was a neighbor to Bailey Dover in Rabun County, Georgia in 1840 who moved to Gilmer County, Georgia by 1860. ==== DOVER Mailing List ==== Some of the information you see may not be verified. Michele, A Percy Kidd and Blanche Kidd are listed as two of the children of James Kidd and Ella G. Richardson in the Descendents of John Woodson pages under Generation 8. See http://trevilians.com/others/wood3.htm#top. Might be them but I have no other info other than having seen those names listed and can't vouch for the data. Thought I would try posting my "brick wall" and see if anyone can guide me in the right direction! Looking for the parentage of Peter Francis CLEMENTS "Frank", born 1828 in Fluvanna Co. He married there in 1849 to Martha E. BUSBY. Both Frank/Peter and Martha were living in Scottsville, Albemarle Co. in 1900, but appear to have died by 1910. This is the time period in which death certificates were not kept - correct?? Is there a cemetery in Scottsville which is recorded and accessible?? Their children were (would like to make contact with ANY descendants!) 1. William James CLEMENTS 1850-1933 m(1) Lucy McLAIN 1871 m(2) Lady Bugg BISHOP (1857-1914) 1879 2. John Richard CLEMENTS b1852 m. Elizabeth KIRBY 1879 living in 1915 in Scottsville 3. George Francis CLEMENTS b.1856 m. Susan Elizabeth FARISH 1877 living in 1900 in Scottsville 4.
