Hi Rosanne; Bremo Bluff Historic Distr. includes several African American landmarks which were an original part of the estates built by the planter, soldier, and reformer Gen. John Hartwell Cocke. In the West wing of the plantation is a schoolroom in which Cocke undertook the education of his slaves very much against the grain of public sentiment at the time. Also there remains today Grace Episcopal Church a chapel originally built by Cocke for his slaves. It may well be worth your time to visit Bremo Bluff and explore the local history as well as the Cocke family and there slaves. B McKoy

Does anyone have any information they would like to share regarding Bernard BUTLER who married Sukey KIRBY, 2 Oct 1792, Fluvanna Co., VA. Her father was listed as William KIRBY on the marriage record. Was Alley SEAY William KIRBY'S wife? I was wanting to know if Bernard and Sukey had a daughter named Nancy born between 1793-1795, in Fluvanna? Nancy BUTLER married Matthew MOORE, 1813 in Fluvanna Co., VA. They had several children born in Fluvanna and Cambell, VA. Matthew and Nancy moved from Fluvanna after 1830 to Campbell Co., VA to Kanawha and then finally to Cabell Co., (W)VA where they settled. If anyone has any information on this family to share with me, I will greatly appreciate it and will be glad to exchange my information I have so far. I have alot to exchange. Thank you very much. Hi Bill, Visiting family in Zions x Roads next week if no one else has stopped to read and sent the info on I will return to Charlottesville that way. My grandparents are buried at Cunningham Methodist Church and lived a mile or two from it. Now I am curious about the history. I will keep a watch on the postings to plan my trip. Will try to help. There is a historical marker just South of Palmyra on Highway 15 marking the crossing of "Jack Cunningham" . I've not stopped to read the marker but it might help explain the source of the name Cunningham.
