I occasionally see messages that are in reply to other queries that never showed up on my email. I used to receive frequent traffic and now if it is once every 3 weeks I'm lucky. Any suggestions? I receive scads of information from another rootsweb location in PA. Sally@realtor.com

    2. Let's see, my family has a heritage of Scots, Irish, English, French, German, African, Italian, Native American, & Russian Jew, oops I forgot the Mexican, which is a mixture of Spanish & Native American - at least that is all that I know about right now. I am investigating specifically who the ancestors are through genealogy - but that will only tell me the names of those ancestors. If I want to get a sense of who they were and what they were - I must depend on history. One thing I know about life that I have learned through history is there seems to always have been (all the way back to biblical times) those who conquered and those who were conquered. History tells us that the groups changed roles, depending upon the times. While slavery, conquering, and being conquered are all in my family's history, I personally have not been anyone's slave nor have I had one. I personally have not conguered anyone unless my husband of 39 years counts. I have not been conquered except by the love of family and friends that entraps us all. I try not to hurt anyone and to be tolerant of anyone different from myself but I confess I lose patience with those that use history as an excuse to be hurtful to others. If we just delete something that does not interest us, or that we think shouldn't be on the list - it will not be part of the list. We tend to draw these things out by passing on our particular opinions and sometimes bad feelings. Notice I included myself as I am doing this very thing at this time. Thanks for reading if you got this far.

    2. Thanks to all the hoopla, I learned something today. I found the info very interesting and I am glad that I could retrieve it after I had deleted it. I had been away and was purging my email of anything that didn't appear to be needed. I was viewing th subject lines & lucky 13 did not seem as though it would be about any of the family I am researching, so I deleted it. Then I kept seeing it as the subject, so I decided to go back & see what the hoopla was about and I learned something. If a day goes by without learning something, it is time to leave. Thanks for helping me today! Wandra

    3. O.K. can't resist. It was off topic. However, I loved it and saved it to disk to share with others. An occasional off topic sharing with our group isn't too harmful, particularly since there hasn't been much "on topic" material submitted lately. I really have a hard time resisting commenting on the responses to off topic material that contain off topic material. Peace, Charlie in Louisiana Bayou Country

I don't think others are "offended" at off-topic posts just because we prefer not to see them. Speaking for myself, I am more often just annoyed by the unchallenged assumptions found within the content. As for genealogy being history, we hear that a lot, but history tends to be written by the winners, and a result, it is often loaded, distorted, and value-laden to be the point of being propaganda. Genealogy, on the other hand, can be studied without falling into the traps of perpetuating stereotypes and misconceptions, which historians frequently do deliberately. Let's keep it that way here. Thanks for listening.

    3. Before I get any more comments regarding the subject message I put on the lists, I apologize if I offended anyone. I certainly did not mean any harm - just thought this was a bit of history someone might like to know. After all, what is genealogy but history. Mary Reed

    2. To whom it may concern, Personally, I loved the story of the Lucky 13, The One Dollar Bill. I believe that any part of history has alot to do with genealogy. Genealogy is History and History is Genealogy. I learned something from this little history lesson that I never knew before. I am one here that is certainly glad that W. R . Reed took the time and posted something that he thought that would be of interest to us. Genealogy goes hand in hand with History. Without our ancestors, there would be no history. And without our ancestors, where would we be today? Darlena Kidd Harmon in WV
