REF: GUARANTEED ORIGINAL 1858 dated sales agreement made between James M. Kent, Jr. and John S. Glass of Fluvanna County, Virginia, in which Glass agrees to sell Kent "...all of his crop of tobacco" for the sum of $200," agreeing to deliver the crop to Kent's store. Kent was a local businessman in the central Virginia area, buying and seeling agriculture items and general merchandise goods to local landowners. This interesting early agreement measures 7-5/8-inches wide by 7-3/8-inches high. Completed written by hand in ink and signed by both parties. Kent later served in the Confederate army. --- Can anyone further identify this John S. Glass from Fluvanna County? I do know it cannot possibly be John Samuel Glass (Samuel Bozwell Glass' son) as he was born only two years before this transaction. I would really like to know who it is, as I am seriously thinking about bidding on the document. It is very likely we are related, just don't know how ... yet. Dave Glass

Can anyone help me break this brick wall? Peter Francis CLEMENTS was born in Fluvanna Co., Virginia in 1828 (or at Keswick, Albemarle Co., VA). He was known in records as Peter CLEMENTS, Peter F. CLEMENTS, Frank CLEMMENTS and Francis CLEMENTS. In 1848 he married at Fluvanna Co. to Martha E. BUSBY and lived all his life in Fluvanna and Albemarle Counties. They appear together as a young married couple in the 1850 census of Fluvanna. Their family is listed in all US census records through to 1900. By 1910 they both appear to have died, but during this period in Virginia, there was no federal death records. Who were his parents? There were many CLEMENTS families in Fluvanna (few in Albemarle) but there exists no land records tying Peter/Francis to any of these families. Many of the names given to his 10 sons are similar to names used in other Fluvanna Clements families? How does he fit in?? Any leads, research suggestions, appreciated! Time to post my MANLEY brick wall again - can anyone shed any light on this? Caroline MANLEY married in 1849 at Albemarle County to Shadrach BISHOP. At that time she said she was an orphan over the age of 16, without a guardian, and wanted Shadrach to be appointed her guardian. No parents or family members were listed. In Caroline's Widow Pension Application of 1906, she stated she was born in Fluvanna County in 1830, and at the age of 8 moved to Albemarle County. There were MANLEY families in Fluvanna, most descendants of Micajah MANLEY and Sarah SEAY. Micajah (1757-1838), the patriarch of this branch of the family, made his will in 1838 at Which time all of his sons were alive, except Hezekiah MANLEY. Micajah does Mention "children of my son, Hesakair" but does not list them by name. Court records show the death of Hezekiah in 1834, but do not mention his heirs. His widow, Susan (BASS) Manley married (2) in 1836 to William CURRIER of Albemarle County. There is no proof that Caroline was the daughter of Hezekiah Manley. At present, Hezekiah is the best candidate for Caroline's father based on the following points (keeping in mind that Caroline was orphaned BY 1849): (1) Micajah Manley's will of 1838 states "children of my son Hezekiar", indicating that there was more than one. (2) the 1830 Census lists only one child (male) for Hezekiah - though Caroline could have been born later in the year, after the 1830 census was taken. (3) Hezekiah was dead in 1834. (4) Susan (Bass) Manley married again in 1836 and appears to have left Fluvanna - did she go to Albemarle by 1838 and take her Manley children with her? (5) Hezekiah's brothers were all living in 1838, and at present research, appear to have all been living in 1849. (6) Micajah's brothers didn't remain in Fluvanna, and their grandchildren were not born in that county - as far as can be determined at this time. Can anyone confirm this theory?? Or offer another suggestion? Steve Marshall Ontario, Canada http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/m/a/r/Steve-D-Marshall/index.html

Dave, the Fluvanna County Marriages book (1781-1849) lists 4 male and 3 female Duncan marriages. Two of the males were named John - John Duncan & Jinney Snead, 12 Dec 1804; min - George Anderson (Bapt) - 27 Jul 1806 (date of return) John Allen Duncan & Dorothea Herndon 8 Aug 1813; min - John Goodman The Death Records book for Fluvanna (1853-1896) has: Duncan, Howell S (white male) d. 2 May 1856 of consumption, aged 63 yr, s/o John & Sarah Duncan, b. Fluv, G. Duncan nephew rept. There are 33 separate entires in the index of the death record book for Duncan, so some of the family stayed in Fluvanna. Hope this helps some. Peg Janke
I am looking for information on any John Duncans living in Fluvanna Co. during the 1700s or early 1800s. I believe George Duncan (b. abt. 1730 in Scotland) had a son named John. Did this John later move to Amherst County? George also had a brother named John living in Amherst Co. and John had a son named John living there as well. I remember seeing a record somewhere, though, of a John Duncan moving from Fluvanna Co. to Amherst Co. Any information on this Duncan family would be greatly appreciated. Thank you! Dave Duncan

Hello to all, I'm trying again to find the parents of Samuel B. Johnson, Jr. of Fluvanna County, VA. He married Elizabeth Shepherd, Dec. 19th 1831 in Fluvanna. She was the daughter of John Shepherd. Walker Timberlake and James T. Shepherd witnessed the note that John Shepherd sent giving permission for her marriage. Samuel Johnson and Walker Timberlake placed bond for the marriage and the bond was witnessed by Abra. Shepherd Jr. and signed by both Samuel and Walker Timberlake. In the 1830 Fluvanna County Census living next to one another were: Samuel Johnson on page 342 NTL aged 40-50; Henry Johnson aged 30-40; John Johnson Sr. aged 30-40; William L. Johnson aged 50-60; George W. Johnson aged 30-40. Of those, Samuel is the only one that has a male aged 15-20 that could be Samuel B. Johnson, Jr., who was born Sept. 1, 1810. I didn't note the page # (next trip), but on line 6 was Walker Timberlake, line 7 John H. Timberlake and line 8 John Shepherd with a male aged 40-50 and a male aged 50-60 and a female aged 15-20. According to later census records for Elizabeth, she was born abt. 1810, also. Does anyone have any information concerning any of the Johnsons/Shepherds named? Thanks, Donna
