*I don't know if anyone on this forum gets Esther Johnson's e-mail or not , since this one includes the rock churches that are in Floyd County I thought someone might enjoy reading her article and seeing the pictures. MURIEL* -------- Original Message -------- Subject: Fw: Bob Childress and the Rock Churches Date: Wed, 13 Feb 2008 08:51:33 -0500 From: Esther Johnson <epdj1@embarqmail.com> To: Esther Johnson <epdj1@embarqmail.com> *I know it is early, but Randle Brim sent me this info. so I wanted to go ahead and send it out. I will send again later but on Sept 8, 2008 Randle Brim will speak at the SCGA meeting about the Beautiful Rock Churches Bob Childress and his congregations built in different places along the Parkway. There is a book called, "The Man Who Moved A Mountain" that tells the story about Bob Childress and the churches. If you have never read this book you are missing out on a wonderful part of the history from this area. Bob Childress was an amazing man. I know Pages Book store in Mt. Airy has this Book and you may find it on Amazon.com. Now Randle Brim is writing a book about the churches. The attachments are about the research Randle has been doing on the churches. Thanks to everyone who writes these wonderful books about our ancestors. All my past articles from the Simple Pleasures related to Bob Childress and the Rock Churches were used by the State of Virginia to help place the Six Rock Churches on the National Register of Historical Places. They got in touch with me about two plus years ago, and asked if I would help them and if they could use my printed material. The Six Churches were placed on the Virginia State Landmarks Historical Register in Richmond, Va. on Dec. 6, 2006, and they were listed on the National Register of Historical Places on March 26, 2007. The churches have not yet had the time nor the co-ordination to obtain the actual signs. About a half year ago, the Blue Ridge Regional Visitors Center at I-77 at Hillsville, Va. got in touch with me and ask me to help write and to design a brochure for the rock churches. Those brochures have been printed and have been circulated for about the past 3 or 4 months. It is my understanding that they are getting a great reception. They are also passed out to the Tour Buses that have visited the churches. Attached is a copy of the brochure.
