Phoebe I knew Riley Poff in early 1940's. He had a country store on US 221 going toward Roanoke as you left Copper Hill and cleared the sharp curve his store, house and farm land was on right side of road. He owned a special ordered truck that had gears ratio that made the top speed of maybe 45 or 50 miles per hour. He had apple orchard, raised cattle and etc. Roscoe Craighead had a store later on the left side of road. I remember he had a storage of paint that had arsenic as one ingredient in it and the cattle ate the paint and got poisoned. My how can some of the memories of yesteryear pop up in one's mind. Edgar, Thanks for that info. You know they have changed the road now and the store , that Roscoe ran, has went thru several business but is still there. I never knew Riley Poff but who could ever forget Roscoe. Roscoe would go down to Rainbow bakery and get all the outdated bread and cakes to "feed the hogs" but all of us kids would be tickled to death to get a hold of some of those cakes and cookies. As long as we didn't see mold on them , we would eat them. But, once I bit down on a honey bun and when I went to take another bite there was half a wiggling worm in the bun. I bet it was 30 years before I would eat another honey bun. Is the house that is across from the store , the original Riley Poff house or have all the originals been torn down? Have not traveled that road for sometime, but it is likely the same house. I wonder if you knew Willard Wood that lived on the left just past Roscoe's store? I worked at Radford Army Ammunition Plant with him. Have a group picture of our shift made in 1952 or 1953 at work. I promised his grandson a copy and the problem is locating the orininal to get a good copy. The last time I found it I put it in a place I said where I would know where to look when I needed it again. Famous words that I say so many times and am still looking. Edgar, Scott Schaffer has two Riley Poff's in his data base. One was born in 1882 and died in 1970. The other Riley Poff was born in 1875 and died in 1949. Which one do you think was the store owner? ----- Original Message ----- From: "Edgar Vest" <eevest@msn.com> To: <pjspoff@earthlink.net> Cc: <VAFLOYD@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, January 29, 2008 9:18 AM Subject: Re: [VAFLOYD] Coffin builders & Undertakers > > Phoebe I knew Riley Poff in early 1940's.
