I attended the Long Way Home several times and am sure he was part of the actors. I lived in Pulaski county about 30 years and loved the travels to Radford yard saleing. Also not as fond, but by neccesity to the doctors. Sure hated to see the college take the streets and route 11 had to be relocated because students kept walking into the traffic. I worked a short time in the Hosiery Mill in east end before going into Navy in WW2. Boarded with a lady a few blocks from college. Radford was so crowded as there was about 23 thousand people working on the construction and operation of Radford Ordnance Plant and the plant at Dublin had many workers there also. The old King's Hospital is now a tea room or something like that since Radford College is owners. They built a 22 million dollar bridge across New River. By working those years at the powder plant I was accquainted with lots of folks in that area. My Mom used to have boarders in the early days of Radford Arsenal. Where did you board? My home was sold and then sold again to one of the local realtors who turned it into student housing. I can hardly stand to see it these days. In fact, when I have occasion to be in that end of town, I make a point not to look at it or drive by that way. It is just too sad to see the way it has been mistreated. The tea room you mentioned at St. Albans (or Kings as you mentioned), is a lovely restaurant which specializes in a wonderful Sunday Buffet. It is quite popular with the after church folks...in fact, it is a good idea to make a reservation before going. Although, I have been a few times without reservation and they always manage to accommodate my group. It is called Baker's Best and they also do catering. They catered my high school class reunion last summer...de-lish!!! http://www.thebakersbest.com/ Norma Edgar Vest wrote: > I attended the Long Way Home several times and am sure he was part of > the actors. Edgar, My Mother rented out rooms to workers at the Radford Ordnance Plant during the WWII boom. We lived on Clement Street. The big white house (it has been torn down and is now a parking lot) directly behind the First Christian Church on Tyler Avenue . My Dad worked at the Arsenal. There were several on Clement Street that keep boarders. A Mrs. Dixon, also cooked meals for these workers. We moved from Clement Street to First Avenue (one block from Tyler) between Downy and Clement. After my Dad died, my Mother sold it to a realtor who turned it into apts. and added an addition to the house with apts. for college students. It is so sad to see that area where Norma, Phoebe and I grew up. We have such fond memories of our childhood on Clement Street. Do you know a June Vest that lives in Pulaski? She lives at the Village (apartments that I manage). I saw the 'Long Way Home' outdoor drama several times and do remember Bobby Collins. I did not know him but enjoyed his performances in the drama.
