    3. I grew up with corn bread cooked in a cast iron skillet, beans & corn bread was the meal. Sometimes we had water cress from the stream, that was special. This was in California, in the forties. Inherited from my folks and their lives in Floyd. She did try to write a recipe for me but it never turned out like hers. I remember she always got the skillet hot and she used bacon grease or other oils and she would pour the mixture of flour and cornmeal and this would be cooking before she put it in the oven.
