On our way out of Hillsville yesterday (where it was 13 degrees at the time...) we decided to take the "long" way out route 58 through Galax, Independence, and over the mountain. At the top of Mount Rogers, it was SEVEN degrees!! My Florida children had never seen a single digit thermometer reading (in the car, of course...we weren't brave enough to step out!) The New River, over between Galax and Independence, had ALOT of ice in it. In the years I lived up there, I had never seen that before. It was SO pretty! Kat; Many years ago we lived in Danville, VA and when we visited my grandparents near Bristol, VA we went thru Hillsville and near Wytheville (or in that area) we forded the river which was probably New River and the highway or I should say road went by the Old Shot Tower. And I think that Daddy's car was an Essex. A lot has changed in the last 75 years. I enjoyed cruising, speeding or I should say driving up I-77.
