    3. Hi, Kay. As I write this, the sky is black and the whole house is dark as the rain fairly gushes from the clouds overhead and thunder rumbles and grumbles. Crash! Whew! Just now there was a nearby strike of lightning and a thunderboomer that sent me jumping about a foot off my chair! I could do without those... Anyway, in Roanoke there are two main hospitals, Carilion Roanoke Memorial and Carilion Roanoke Community, both run by the same company. They were independent of each other before the medical conglomerate took over. The other large hospital in the valley is Lewis-Gale in Salem. Were "your" nurses at one of those? I went to school with VIA kids... John and his sister Nancy... in Roanoke. And I have VIA cousins (maybe including Dr. VIA... I wasn't into genealogy when we met) from Franklin CoVA. Genealogists, professional or amateur, have certainly put in our requisite hours of research and study. My own opinion is that knowledge gained in genealogy is as valid as knowledge gained from any other discipline, and is and should be used when appropriate to the discussion at hand. Why should it be considered otherwise? My rain has almost passed. How about yours? Carolyn HALE BRUCE

    3. Hi Carolyn, You're describing what the sky looks like right now here as the thunderboomers rumble across the Salt Lake Valley. I am waiting for this to pass and then I will leave the house to go to the Highland Games. I NEED my annual dose of Scotland come rain or shine. What's a little rain to a Scot? However my 110 lb. Golden Retriever is a quivering mass of fur down in the depths of my basement. She will have to hold the fort while I go enjoy myself and I don't think she's up to it. We've had this daily dose of thunder showers for weeks now. The hospital was the Carilion Memorial, I think. When I finished that paper, I put all the references away. So I can't check their names. These two nurses were working with diabetics, just as I did before I retired. I'm the standard genealogist who asks everyone she meets and hears their surname, "are you related to so and so?" Or the other standard phrase is, "do you have kin in VA?" Some look at me funny and others are happy to talk about their family. If my friends are with me, they just roll their eyes and groan.
