Several of the neighbors and friends gave Mr. J.A. Moles a surprise October 18th by setting him a birthday dinner, he being seventy-five that day. Sowers and little son, Olen, Mrs. George Harris and little daughter, Mrs. Mandy Moles and little grandson, Fred George, Mrs. H.E. Thomas, Sam Weddle and wife and J.M. A nice dinner was served consisting of cakes, pies, custards, pickles, chicken, beef and all good t! hings to eat that could be mentioned and every one seemed to enjoy the day. They all departed in the evening, thanking Mr. Moles for the nice day and wishing him many more happy birthdays to come. Rev. Willie Reed, from Schoolfleld, began his series of meetings at Pleasant Valley the first Sunday. Was sorry to hear of the death of Mrs. Rhoena Hill. Mr. Ray Reed will leave soon for Blacksburg where he will attend school. Mr. Andy Boothe is pleased to look toward the north. Miss Toye Lester seems rather lonesome these days. Misses Lila and Liva Reed seems to have gone into the poultry business. GROUNDHOG (September 10,1925) ===================== DULANEY SHIFTERS Our school is progressing nicely under the management of Miss Lillie Reed with an enrollment of 39 scholars. Mr. Lemuel Lester has bought him a farm near White Rock. Mrs. Charlie Earles is very sick yet. TEN POTATO BUGS (March 14,1918) ============= GRADED ROAD ITEMS Mr. Fred Hurt is very sick with flu. We are very sorry that Mrs. Clara Reed has closed her school. Mr. I.W. Lester has moved into his new dwelling house. We wonder what will be next. Little Mabel Mitchell seems to be getting: very active under the skillful training of Lewis Mitchell. MUTT AND JEFF (February 6,1919) ============= GRAYSVILLE GRINDINGS The sick are improving. Mrs. Thessie Byrd, aged 91, died at the home of her sonin-law, William B. Reed, April 9, 1903. Mrs. Byrd was the oldest lady of Graysville. The funeral services were conducted at the house by Elder Asa D. Shortt, in a very solemn manner. The remains being interred at Salem church. Mr. John W. Hill, of Lilac, died at his home of a complication of diseases on Thursday, April 0, 1903. The funeral was preached at his home on Sunday, 13, by Elder P.G. Lester of Floyd, who in a very impressive manner showed that salvation is of the Lord. Mr. Hill was a highly esteemed citizen. The bereaved have our sympathy. Nature is now putting on her beautiful coat of green. The bursting of buds and singing of birds tell us that spring is here. Our Heavenly Father is ever mindful of his creatures. Widely diseminating his grace and giving good gifts unto men. Fruit trees are not damaged to any great extent here. Some of the early apples are killed. There are plenty of peaches and cherries yet and if no hard frosts come from now on there will be a good crop with only a small percentage lost. Many of our citizens are leaving our county, going west. It is to be hoped that the good roads congress will find some way to improve the conditions of our roads, as legislation has had but little effect thus far as to improvement of the road laws. Mrs. S.D. Lester and son Jennings spent Monday at Ephraim Dulaney's. JOE AND DINAH (January 23,1919) ============ HOWERY ITEMS On Wednesday, Jan. 15 the home of Mr. and Mrs. Charles J. Vest was the scene of a pretty marriage, the contracting parties being Miss Lucy Kennett of this place and Mr. H.L. Holland of Rural Retreat. The ceremony was performed by Rev. G.H. Thompson of Simpsons, Va. We are sorry to chronicle the death of Mrs. Elizabeth Mills, which occurred at her home near Pine Forest the 17th inst. The deceased was in her 87th year and was the great-grandmother of the writer. Rev. R.A. Scott preached at Stonewall Sunday. Miss Cora Dobyns arrived here from Montgomery county last Saturday to take charge of her school. Mr. W.C. Vest and family have returned from West Virginia. Messrs. J.W. Yeatts and Waller King made a business trip to Roanoke last week. Messrs. Otis and Cortez Yeatts started for West Virginia this week, to seek employment. Several from this place attended the funeral and burial of Mr. John Hill Saturday. He was buried in the Moran burying ground. Elder P.G. Lester attended to the burial services. EASTER FLOWER April 13, (1903) ============= HUCKLEBERRY BLOW OFFS Thrashing seems to be the order of the day. Josiah Graham and daughter Erme have taken a trip to West Virginia. Miss Nannie Howery has returned home from a visit to Christiasburg. Those calling on Miss Loretta Bower Sunday were Ellavada and Agatha Yearout and Zora Howery, Harry Martin, Floyd, Chymer and Wayne Sowers and Harvie Conner. Miss Elvie Graham and friend, Elvie Lester of Cambria were visiting her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Graham Saturday and Sunday. Miss Annie Yearout from Roanoke was visiting her parents Mr. and Mrs. Willie Yearout Saturday and Sunday. Junior Nixon and Chymer Sowers seem to enjoy coming on Huckleberry every Sunday. Prayer meeting at Camp Creek is largely attended every Sunday night. There will be preaching there the second Saturday night. Miss Ada Sumpter celebrated her twenty-first birthday Saturday night by having a party. Miss Thelma Huff entertained some of her friends Saturday night. Those present were Ada and Ruth Sumpter, Marie Howery, Junior Nixon, John Sumner, Irvin Bower, Hestal Graham, Page Howery, Tazewell Yearout, Ivan Dickerson, Harmon Sumpter and Bernard Hungate. All left at a late hour, expressing themselves as having a most delightful time. Mr. and Mrs. Vince Sowers and two children were visiting at John Howery's Sunday. (September 15,1927) ================ LESTER Mrs. Amanda Wells, of Board Shoals, has been worse for a few days. Mrs. Jesse Altizer is not much improved. Mrs. Mary Altizer has not yet returned from Penn. We are having a fine season, plenty of rain, corn and oats are growing very fast, wheat is doing fairly well. There were several from this place attended the dedication of the monument at Floyd last week and reported a very pleasant time. A.G. We are sorry the rest of the boys will soon have to go to Camp Lee. We certainly do hate it but we hope they will never have to go to France and that they can soon return home. Miss Ella Bishop gave a party, Monday night in honor of her brothers who had to leave for camp. Lester preached a very able sermon at White Oak Grove Sunday. Mrs. Peradine Peterman is convalescent at this writing. The teacher's meeting at Lick Log school house on last Saturday was largely attended by friends and patrons and also a number of teachers were present and several speeches were made. The White Oak Grove school is progressing nicely under the care of Miss Alma Keith. There is a debating society every Friday night. All are cordially invited. A letter passed through Russell office this week addressed as follows: "Let me go at a rapid rate to Floyd county and Virginia state, in Narcott office let me lay Till Miss Mat tie Graham carries me away." Miss Verbena Lester expects to leave Saturday for Roanoke to attend school this session.
