The wedding bells are ringing. Misses Lucy and Meda Epperly entertained quite a number of their friends Sunday. Those present were Misses Lara Bishop, lona Edwards, Clara Naff and Alma Epperly, Messrs. Rigby Walton, Peyton Lester, Brainerd Edwards and Leonard and Garfield Epperly. Mr Hugo Boothe attended services at St. Mathew Sunday. Misses Ila and Allie Lester visited Miss Arizona Edwards Sunday. FOUR SUNBEAMS (April 27,1911) =========== BURKS RUN ITEMS Please allow me a small space in your valuable paper and I'll give you some of the latest happenings of this place. There is right much sickness in the neighborhood at this writing. Mr. Ace Bonds is seriously ill. Dr. Conduff was called to see him Monday. Edith, the little daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Earl Phillips, has been very sick with pneumonia but is getting better. The guests of Miss Geraldine Meredith Thursday evening were Misses Bess Roop, Ruby Covy, Nell Loman, Dallas Phillips, Lilian Bishop, Messrs. Forest Haley, John Wilson, Max Meredith, Randolph and Troy Phillips. Messrs. W.E. and C.D. Phillips were business visitors in Christiansburg one day last week. Misses Nelle Lowman and Ruby Covey spent Thursday night with their aunt, Mrs. J.S. Linkous. Misses Bess Roop and Dotie Phillips of S.H.S. decided they liked walking better than riding horseback and hiked to school several days last week. Poge Wilson has just lately moved his family on Miss Nannie Byrds place. I could write more news, but as I only asked for a small space, I must ring off. If I see this in the paper, I will come again soon. A LONESOME GIRL (March 12,1924) ============= ITEMS FROM BUZZARD HOLLOW Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Weeks and little daughter was visiting at his father's last week. Messrs. John Woods and John Bishop are regular visitors at Mr. John Poff. Wonder what their intentions are? PAPA'S PETS (November 11,1915) ================ NEWS FROM CARTHAGE The Press is always a welcome visitor in our community. Mr. J.A. Bishop saw a large catamount near Mr. J.R. Alley's a few days since. Lightning struck and killed a hog belonging to W.C. Akers in 15 yards of his door last Wednesday. Mr. Syl Reed has purchased the property of J.P. Rakes, the well known postmaster of Ego. Mr. Reed is preparing to sell goods at Ego. We are sorry to report the sad news of the death of Mrs. William Thompson. She departed this earthly life Wednesday last. The remains were taken to Hall's Graveyard and laid in the cold and silent vault to await the resurrection morning when all the earth shall be gathered together and judged according to the deeds done in the body. The deceased leaves a husband and one little girl four years old to mourn their loss. The Lord giveth and the Lord taketh away, blessed by the name of the Lord. B.H. ALGONQUIN (February 26,1902) ============== CHERRY HILL ITEMS The young folks gave Miss Ozallo and Mr. Oliner Poff a surprise party Monday night, was very much enjoyed. Those present were Misses Llllie, Ida and Allie Lester, Agnes Altizer, Minnie Shelor, Clara Roop, Effie Sowers, Martha Chaffin, Messrs. Lancie and Lathie Lester, Edgar and Roscoe Roop, Shelbern and Willard Epperly, Brethard Chafin, Willie Weston and Clyde Bishop. THREE QUESTION BOXES (March 24,1910) ============= CHESTNUT RIDGE ITEMS Please allow me a small space in the dear old Press and I will give you a few happenings from this place. The health of this community is very good at present. Visiting and canning beans are the order of the day. Those visiting at T.H. Altizer's Sunday were Mrs. Annie Jewell and children, Oilie, Nellie, and Frank, Mr. and Mrs. John Jewell and children, Fred and Helen, Mrs. Lucy Hatcher, Miss Verna Bishop and Mr. Charlie Howard, Mr. Roscoe Hatcher and Miss Hoover, Mr. and Mrs. Wilbert Scaggs and son, Evans, Mr. and Mrs. Jake Scaggs and children, Nellie, Virginia and Calvin, Mr. and Mrs. G.W. Altizer and children. May, Donnie, Alva, Annie and Paul. They had kodak pictures made in the afternoon. All seemed to enjoy the day. Several from around here attended preaching at Copper Valley Sunday. We were sorry to hear of the death of Mrs. Bettie Bishop, also the death of Mr. Cal Duncan. Mr. and Mrs. Glen Akers and daughter Arba were visiting at Mr. Humphrey Scaggs Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. Dink Scaggs and children were visiting at Mrs. Peradine Scaggs Saturday night and Sunday. As I only asked for a small space, I had better quit for this time, hoping to see this in print. AN OLD SUBSCRIBER (August 9,1923) =============== COPPER VALLEY HUSKINGS The Literary Society at Copper Valley school house was largely attended Saturday night, especially by the ladies and several good speeches were made. The school is progressing nicely under the management of Miss Millie Boothe. We can boast of having the roughest fords and slickest roads, from Ego to Copper Valley, of any other section of the county. Messrs. Bently and Kyle Altizer, Leonard Teel and John Bishop were visiting at Mr. M.E. Gordon's Sunay. Mr. A.L. Akers, our popular merchant, made a trip to Indian Valley this week. Shingle hauling and fox hunting seems to be the principal occupation of the people this week. Miss Ona Wade, of Nasturtium, visited her cousin, Mrs. Wesley Bishop last week. Mrs. Harvey Slusher, of Falcon, visited her sister, Mrs. Thos. Harman, Sunday. TILTON (August 28,1902) =============== LOOK OUT FOR LAUREL RIDGE Plowing and talking war seems to be the chief occupation of the day. Misses Lucy and AUie Epperly, Gladys and Harkens Richards, Bessie Otey, Lula Bishop, Messrs. Trigg and Jake Epperly, Joe Graham, Dallas Sowers was calling on Miss Alma Epperly Sunday evening. TWO GREEN HORNS (March 21,1918) ============= MUDDY ROAD NEWS Miss Edna Dulaney and Rhoda Dickerson were the guests of Annie Mae Roop Wednesday envening. Nosby and Lemon Simmons and Woodie Mitchell had the walking blues Thursday night. Edd Bishop likes Windy Hill just fine. The singing on Laurel Ridge was very largely attended Wednesday night. The singing will be every Wednesday night. Well, I will ring off. Come on Riner with your gas. IT WONT BE LONG (May 17.1923) ============ OAK HILL ITEMS Miss Roxie Thompson gave the young folks a party Wednesday night. Those present were Misses Nellie and Willie Akers, Linnie, Roxie and Edna Thompson and Willie Moore, Messrs. Eslie, Fred, Dannie and Charlie Altizer, Clayton and Frank Bishop, Elmer Weeks, Roy Sutphin, Halsie Pugh, Dewey Akers, Trigg and Harvie Thompson and Roy Harman. We are sorry the rest of the boys will soon have to go to Camp Lee. We certainly do hate it but we hope they will never have to go to France and that they can soon return home. Miss Ella Bishop gave a party, Monday night in honor of her brothers who had to leave for camp. Those present were Gladys and Livia Lester, Ila, Sadie, Nellie and Willie Akers, Olivia Walker, Tressie Altizer, Gladys Bishop and Iva Pugh, Messrs. Jennings, Bentley and Gordon Lester, Charles, Dewey and Emmitte Akers, Trigg, Harvie and Ora Thompson, Frank, Clayton, Herman and Waddie Bishop, Donnie, Charlie, Hubert and Bob Altizer, Oscar Reed, Roy Sutphin, Hobert Weddle, Garver Reynolds, Lura Dunoan, Mr. and Mrs. Harrison Bishop and little daughter Helen, and Mrs. Sofa Sutphin. They all left at a late hour, expressing themselves as having had a nice time. It seems several of the girls around here have the blues but who could blame them. TWO LOVERS (August 1,1918) ============== ROCK CREEK ITEMS The young folks gave Mr. and Mrs. Levi Duncan a surprise party Saturday night, coming in about seven o'clock. On account of it being stormy not a very large crowd attended. Those that were present were Misses Virgie, Bertha, Eva, Myrtle and Pay McPeak, Mr. Howard Akers, Boss Wade, John Dickerson, Doc Boothe, Cline Bishop, Burman, Burton and Roy McPeak, Raymon Akers, and Lymon, Bentley Teel. A BLACK EYED BOY (February 5,1920) =============== SNOW BALL ITEMS If you will please give me a small space in your dear old press, I will give you a few items from this place. 0h how proud I was to have such a beautiful Fourth, but was disappointed because there was such a small crowd at the Power Plant on Little River. Mr. Obie Bishop and Miss Beulah Funohum of Laurel Ridge got married the Fourth. We wish them much joy and a long happy life together. Will ring off for this time and will come again some day. A TALL GIRL (July 12,1923) ============== SOWERS ITEMS Misses Ina and Edith Chaftin entertained a few of their friends Saturday night. Those present were Misses Edna Richardson, Edna Simmons and Edna Graham, Messrs. Harvey and Alvis Thompson, Elvin and Marvin Earls, Wyth Richardson, Earl Bishop, Dewey Bower, Luman Simmons, Frank Epperly and Hobert Weddle. All left at a late hour expressing themselves as having had a good time. Those visiting at Mr. Osborne Sutphins Sunday were Mr. and Mrs. Harrison Bishop and daughter Helen, Mr. and Mrs. Claude Phillips and little daughter Mary Lee of Roanoke, Messrs. Clarence Akers, Fred Altizer, Roy Thompson and Herman Reed. Miss Evia and Ruby Sutphin and brother Paul attended the debate at New Salem the 4th Sunday. Miss Bertha Mannon returned to the Overall factory Monday morning early. She is going to make her best friend a pair of overalls by Saturday. It seems that Wyth Richardson and Luman Simmons likes to go on Laurel Ridge. Alvis Thompson was seen down on Little River Sunday. ALEX.
