Hello, all, I've been subscribed to this mailing list for a while, but this is the first message I've sent. For those who read Donna Hayden's message on March 12, I am the "mystery cousin" who sent her the pictures from Charlie Reed Cemetery. My name is Dan and I currently live in New Hampshire. Most of my dad's side of my family comes out of Floyd. Robert V "Bobby" Smith, son of Gypsie Gaye Boothe (nee Strickler, nee Smith, nee Agee) and Elmer Byrd Smith, was my grandfather. Recently, I have been able to track down a fair bit of information about his younger days. I'm specifically talking about the years around World War II, when he was engaged in the bootlegging business. Jack Spangler was kind enough to share several stories about his exploits. I've also found some old records of his short-lived stock car racing career. I would be eternally grateful for any leads, records, information or just plain, old stories that anyone could share. I was fortunate enough to have my grandfather around until I was 25 years old, but I still kick myself for not taking the time to ask him more questions or write down more of what he told me. Kind regards, Dan Smith P.S. - I would also be grateful for anything anyone would like to share about Gypsie, Elmer, or their families.
Dan, Contact me off line as I knew bob Smith well. I can tell you some stories about him you would not believe. My email adress is rwhawley@verizon.net. Wayne, Thanks for replying. I know I've heard somebody -- either my dad or my grandfather -- mention your name before. There were also several Hawleys at Auburn when I was going through school. Not sure whether they're any relation of yours. I would be greatly appreciative of any stories you could share about my grandfather. As I said in my post, I could kick myself for not paying more attention while he was living. None that I'm immediately aware of. According to a few family trees I sampled on Ancestry, your grandfather was the son of a George Smith, born May 1830 in Floyd. His father was a Henry Smith, born circa 1794. I can't find anything back beyond that. If we're connected it's back further than my oldest known ancestor on the Smith line, Byrd Smith born 1809 in Franklin County.
