Thanks! I found a death certificate for a Taxi driver that died in 1929. I thought that was kind of early for taxi drivers to be around... but I guess not... maybe it is all the antihistamines in my system!!! -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Dale Hylton Sent: Wednesday, April 01, 2009 9:22 PM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [VAFLOYD] Cars In 1769, the very first self-propelled road vehicle was a military tractor invented by French engineer and mechanic, Nicolas Joseph Cugnot. :) But Henry Ford had an engine running by 1893 but it was 1896 before he built his first car. By the end of the year Ford had sold his first car, which he called a Quadracycle, for $200 and used the money to build another one. With the financial backing of the Mayor of Detroit, William C. Maybury and other wealthy Detroiters, Ford formed the Detroit Automobile Company in 1899. A few prototypes were built but no production cars were ever made by this company. It was dissolved in January 1901. Ford would not offer a car for sale until 1903. ----- "Samantha Carlson" <[email protected]> wrote: > When did the first cars come out?> > > > > Samantha Carlson > > > > To contact Listowner: > Rena Worthen [email protected] > View the Floyd County Virginia Website at: > http://www.rootsweb.com/~vafloyd/floyd.htm > To contact Listowner: Rena Worthen [email protected] View the Floyd County Virginia Website at: http://www.rootsweb.com/~vafloyd/floyd.htm ------------------------------- To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to [email protected] with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message
wikipedia is a good place to find answers to ?'s like that. It has a history of Taxicabs. Looks like the motorized ones weren't in the US until 1938, in NY. On the other hand, I've read that when the Germans were closing in on Paris in World War I, the soldiers were called to the front lines, and many were driven from the city to the fighting in (then motorized) Parisian taxicabs...
