    3. Teaching today is much different than when we were in school, discipline is a major problem, I agree with you Jack, the state testing is overboard and should be shot down. It's terrible in CA. It takes a family to raise children, I know you are proud, congratulation to your grandchildren and to your family. Proud grandpa - again! My grandkids from Hollywood, MD have been interested in robotics competition for the last two years. This year they won the world competition at Atlanta.   Yesterday at Howard University they participated in a competition with robotics teams from the Washington, DC area schools. My grandkid’s team won by a large score margin every game they played. My granddaughter suggested that in the interest of not embarrassing the other teams, they withdraw from the finals in order to give some other teams a chance to be recognized as winners. So they withdrew.   In informal interviews with a group of college professors and corporate sponsors after the competition they were ask a lot of questions about robots and their knowledge of science, math and history. One professor commented that their broad knowledge of these subjects was amazing and exceeded that of many adults (and college students) they had interviewed and the school they attend must be doing a real good job. Then she ask: "What school do you attend?" The answer was: "We are home schooled." The professor commented: "Then that explains it! Most schools in Maryland are teaching only the information needed to pass the tests with little regards to giving the kids a broad knowledge of the subject matter."     Jack Spangler Ellicott City, MD Who interviewed a Washington DC area school teacher who thought that France was the enemy in WWII and Germany was our ally.  That was the reason for the invasion of France on D-day. (Her knowledge of the history of the the war with Japan went down hill from there!)   PS My granddaughter even conducted a conversation in Latin with one of the professors.
