Kat nothing wrong with a good pot of ham hocks and beans. My mom use to make it with white or navy beans. I like to cook up a nice post of pintos with ham hocks. She also add elbow macaroni to make it all go further. Couse she always save bowl or two of just beans for dad as he wasn't a fan of macroni in the beans. Carolyn, Here on my Copper hill land I grow several heirloom beans. Among them is an "October " bean that the people in Floyd simply call "Big October" Actually the "big October " is the largest member of the cranberry, bean. It is the Madeira cranberry bean. All pintos and Octobers are of the cranberry bean family. There are many varieties and probably most of the people are familiar with the bush type October (Taylor) which is kind of a hybrid. The Madeira's that I raise are running beans and will run up to 8 ft or more. I grow all my heirlooms on fences. I have also, Goose bean, Turkey gizzard, Hungarian October, Christmas Lima. Heirloom small lima beans . The goose bean has become my favorite. It is so prolific and can be eaten in all three stages. As a stingless green bean, as a Shelly bean or as a dried bean. Anyone interested, just type in Goose bean and you will get a good description. Also type in Cranberry and Madeira and you will find what we mountain people call the "Big October" Bill the Bean man of Copper Hill -----Original Message----- From: vafloyd-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:vafloyd-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Carolyn Bruce Sent: Tuesday, May 25, 2010 10:15 AM To: vafloyd@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [VAFLOYD] beans Jerry, In my experience, pintos are brown and octobers are speckled, two different beans. Thanks for your response, Margie. That was a sweet comment you made about your grandmother never raising her voice. My mother was a Simmons, Annie Mae, born in Sowers, Floyd Co., Va. in 1914, and she, too, was a gentle person. She pleaded with me, at times, but never shouted or slapped me, which I probably deserved. It was the "Spare the rod, spoil the child" age, unlike today, but she didn't practice. I remember that my grandmother, Callie Edwards Simmons, had a pot of pintos on when we arrived from Portsmouth, Va., for a visit. Yum. She called them "octobers". Are they the same? Probably not, as they also called them "shell beans"? Jerry Lester On Tue, May 25, 2010 at 3:01 AM, <vafloyd-request@rootsweb.com> wrote: > > > Today's Topics: > > 1. Re: Mrs. Pearl N. I visited the Jamboree with my Aunt Mildred Richardson and her husband, Oakley Richardson, of Riner, both deceased, on April 20, 1990. I recorded the event with my VHS camcorder. It was a somber evening as there was a memorial service for Lissie (sp.) Cockram, the store owner's mother. When I saw the You Tube that Jack Spangler provided of the current Jamboree, I decided to convert my VHS tape to digital form so I could publish it on You Tube.
