Vicki, David has sent you some wonderful links to help. I'll suggest you begin at the genealogy room at the library. It is staffed on Wednesdays by a volunteer for only a few hours, but you can certainly research there alone. The courthouse has some of the friendliest and helpful staff of any courthouse I've researched in. The museum is recently opened and the hours there are Thursday - Saturday 12:00 - 5:00. There are always exceptions, and please stay in touch; there are many of us who will try to help you. The Harrises can be found in not only Floyd County, but also in Patrick and Carroll. Burks Fork is one of the districts of Floyd Co., and Carroll has a section known as Burks Fork - so-called because of Burks Fork Creek. You'll find Whitlocks and Stricklers in Little River and Courthouse districts, mainly. Vicki, I'm sure some of the locals will be along shortly to give you the info on research in Floyd. I did find the following on some Mary Harris'. I assumed Harris was her maiden name. I started to copy and paste the info but finally figured seeing it in the original context would be more helpful. I believe it was Barbara Stanley who put together these annotated census records. A great source. The following 2 links will take you to the two foe the Harris families. http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~barbr/harris1.rtf http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~barbr/harris2.rtf The documents will open up with Wordpad, Microsoft Word or other program you use to create text documents. I plan to visit Floyd in the spring and was wondering if anyone could suggest where I could go to do research on my family. I can't seem to find much information and just need some place to start. I have done the basic searching on Ancestry and have census info but would now like to dig a little deeper and actually try to locate where my family lived. On several census Burks Fork is mentioned. Is this an area that will be easily located today? Not sure what to expect when I visit. Some of the family names are Harris, Whitlock, Weeks, Strickler. I am primarily trying to find any info on a Mary Harris. This is a common name and I need to dig deeper to try and identify who she was. Her son's name was Bennett Larkin Harris. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Vicki Burton

Somehow this site is getting blocked. Have no idea why. A complete list of Civil War men is at the Families of Floyd County by Barbara Reininger under History. Kasia
Sorry I see the direct link to the Families of Floyd County Civil War list no longer is active.
