Many years ago I was a young widow at the age of 30 and with 3 small children and you would think that there would be a majority of helpful caring people knocking at my door, right? But I moved into a new community and it was the opposite, and almost had me screaming and running for the hills! There was a line of greedy, crooked men and women lined up at my door. As I was going through this ordeal with repair men, construction crews, car salesmen, etc., I was praying to God that I would not lose my faith in the goodness of man. I didn't want to turn into a cynic! like my father! or a man basher like some of my divorced friends! Please God, what should I do? This was his answer: I was blessed with a chance meeting of a young man, like your new minister friend, Kat, and once I recognized that he was honest and kind and fair and knew others of his kind......I asked if I could call on him when ever I needed help, and then he felt blessed also. He knew people, who knew people, and I soon learned not to stray from my precious little book of 'new friends', and they all soon knew that I was a darn good seamstress and knew alot about herbs and babycare and homeopathy; so then I was giving to the community also, and it was wonderful. Turn to your new friend, Kat!!! who the Lord sent to you! On 1/12/08, Rena Worthen <doreatr@rbnet.com> wrote: > > Thank's for the head's up Howard. Well, since it seems to be a something even someone like me could learn to do, I really do believe I will invest some time in learning the locksmith trade! If there is so much work for a locksmith in that area that one can't make it to my house in 3 days, there must be a place for me! Rena's instructions on lock changing are thorough and very accurate. I have changed many locks and in my home over the years and I can assure you that it is a very simple process even though I am a man!! A good investment for you may be to get a homeowner's do-it-yourself book from a good bookstore. I think there is a Barnes and Noble in Christiansburg that would have a good selection of books. It will pay for itself many times over and you will find that you can make many types of repairs yourself from plumbing, electrical, etc. and increase your confidence level each time you complete a task. Good luck with your new home. Ole Danny Lipford doesn't have a thing on Rena. Kind of reminds me of the ole joke, "how many blonds does it take to change a doorlock".? (just kidding) The best locksmith I know is the fellow who has been at Happys Flea market for as long as I can remember. He told me he was going to get out of the business, if anyone was interested in buying him out. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Rena Worthen" <doreatr@rbnet.com> To: <vafloyd@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, January 12, 2008 12:33 PM Subject: Re: [VAFLOYD] not genealogy--repair men > To Change a lock. Locksmiths! I had the door locks of my car changed after I lost the keys to the doors..this was in NC..what a time trying to get it done.. Guess it is good that we dont have keys to the locks of our hair,( which recalls this ole saying:) Can the pupil of your eye go to school? can the crook of your elbow be sent to jail?...how do you sharpen your shoulder blades?....where is the key to the lock of your hair?..can the calf of your leg eat the corn off your toe?....... keep the mail comin' to Ole Paul

No-One misses Barbara, ole Clyde, Irene and the others any more than I do. There is surely a book here as we discuss not only names & dates but habitat, Foods, and everything across the board about the lives our fore-parents. The people on this list are the best on the web. Rena
While we're on the subject of repair persons, I now know what field I want to go into--locksmithing! In the week I spent up in Virginia, I could NOT get a locksmith out to the house. Evidently, they are too busy to show up! The first one I called a week before I left Florida and set up an appointment...that they never kept. After rescheduling 3 times, I gave up on them. The second one ASSURED me that he would be there, but couldn't arrive for 3 more days. I sat in a hotel for those 3 days, only to get stood up again! I finally had to give up and start for home...and of course, that is when the locksmith called to say he was finally at my house. I was already down the road and had at least a 4 hour drive ahead to get to the next hotel. The locksmith wanted me to turn around and come back and said it would "only" take an hour. This would have put me getting into Knoxville around 10 p.m...which I didn't really relish since the weather was turning so bad. I told this locksmith to forget it, too, and kept driving. I had a good cry over the whole thing but chalked it all up to experience. I am going to get my teenage son and me enrolled in vocational school and we're going to learn how to install locks for ourselves!! We'll come back and steal ALL their business because we WILL show up on time...ha! Guess I just need to get used to the slower pace of life in the country. I think "tomorrow at noon" actually means "whenever I get out that direction...maybe tomorrow...maybe the next day...maybe whenever..." oh,well...live and learn! Kat
Any book of Floyd "ramblings" would have to include the wit and wisdom of "Ole Clyde" as well. For those of you that came to the list after our dear friend passed on...well, you missed a real gem! He was the only one I ever knew who could really give Ole Paul a hard time and he was about the funniest story teller ever. His tale of the trip to the hospital was a hoot! I know he and Barb and all our other friends who have preceeded us are settin' on the Lord's front porch, telling those tall tales and planning all sorts of mischief for when we arrive. Sure do miss 'em! Pet brand whole cultured buttermilk is really good. I put salt and pepper in mine and drink up. Last july while in Maryland for a visit, I bought a container of homeade buttermilk from the amish. A first for me but it sure was delicous. Dorraine ----- Original Message ----- From: "B. Rena, I believe I could use Miss Kat's repair man also. My computer crashed in October, the day after Thanksgiving the Television went. That weekend, my husband killed two hogs in which I vacuum sealed most of the meat only to discover that our freezer had quit working. The ice maker on my frig also decided to stop working and to top all of this off, my furnace would only blow out cold air the following weekend after Christmas. Turns out that it had two burnt elements in it. As the old saying is "when it rains, it pours" Dorraine ----- Original Message ----- From: "fulcher" <fulcher@gdsys.net> To: <vafloyd@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, January 09, 2008 9:00 PM Subject: Re: [VAFLOYD] Not Genealogy > Well, it is clear that God sent me my repair men, so I will > get busy praying and ask Him to send you someone, too!
