Corrine's is in the building that was occupied by the New Altamonte Hospital, founded and build, I believe, by Dr. A. N. Showalter, a native of Snowville, as were several prominent people of their day. These people include but are not limited to Rod Lucas, Bentley Hite, and earlier, Chester Bullard. This brings back so many memories, I grew up at 605 college st, and remember Mr. Simmons, known as not really nice. I know my parents knew your grandparents, my Mom had Cancer when I was 6, and I remember a nurse who lived up the street would come by and give her the shots she needed. I bet it was your Aunt, the name sounds very familiar. I remember Camp Comfort so well, remember stopping by on the way to church with my Dad, and he would get me some candy or chewing gum. Thanks for those memories. Thanks. Someone had mentioned Sullivan St earlier and I thought they were saying that was the original location. Yes I was told it was Corrinnes at one time but that building does not match the picture of a brick building on the post card that was sent eatlier. -----Original Message----- From: vafloyd-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:vafloyd-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Donna Hayden Sent: Sunday, January 13, 2008 8:30 AM To: vafloyd@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [VAFLOYD] Duncans and Altamons Hospital Winnie, On my birth certificate it is "New Altamont Hospital" and I don't recall ever hearing "old." I may have figured out how Joshua Duncan was an uncle to my Smith relatives. It MAY be that his wife Hattie was the connection. Hattie was a sister to Lillie Alice(daughter of Crockett Duncan) and Johusa was the son of Wm. and Julia Duncan. Since both are named Duncan I was assuming Joshua was the direct relation. Winnie

It is not where Krogers is, but across from the Christiansburg Middle School. The official address is 100 Radford Street, NW. It is on Radford, between College and Depot if you are looking at a map. Hope this helps. Alta Mons was the old Crockett Springs Hotel Property and was bought by a Mr. Stewart abt. 1940 who tore down the hotel building and made a house out of part of the hotel building. Rena RE: From: Rena Worthen Date: 1/12/2008 10:53:46 PM To: wminson@swva.net Subject: Re: [VAFLOYD] Duncans Descendants of William Barton Smith Generation No. 1 1. WILLIAM BARTON1 SMITH He married LILLIE ALICE DUNCAN 20 Dec 1902, daughter of CROCKETT DUNCAN and MARY DUNCAN. She was born 14 Dec 1881, and died 20 Jul 1936. I'll send a copy the marriage to you if needed Rena I have all the info on the Smith Line but have found nothing until now on Lillie Alice. My info from the counthouse listed Wim Bartons father as J. P. Smith and Mary Ann Howery. I have his parentage as Alfred Walker and Sarah E. Quesenberry as confirmed by the family. The line am am tracing is through their son Alfred Crocket. Makes sense that he would have a grandfather named Crockett. I would love to have any information you have, especially on the marriage. Winnie
I want to thank everyone for their quick responses. RE: Duncans---I did find the 1890 census and the listing for Crocket Duncan. In the marriage info at the courthouse, it list a J.C. Duncan as father. The C. could be Crocket. It list mother as Ellie Hawley, perhaps the E. in Mary E.is "Ellie". Does not seem to link them with Joshua who was remembered to be her brother. But maybe that will clear up later. RE: Altamons Hospital---I was told the correct spelling but related the name with the Alta Mons from Shawville and confused the spelling. Was there and Old Altamons Hospital on Radford St? I was told it was located where Corrinne's Craft Shop is in the 100 block of Radford St. I was told it was called the "Ol" Altamons Hospital. Is the one pictured still around? And where was it located? From the map on the internet it looks like it was about where Kroger is now. Winnie
Thanks so much, I will try this recipe too! Dorothy & Calvin **************Start the year off right. Easy ways to stay in shape. http://body.aol.com/fitness/winter-exercise?NCID=aolcmp00300000002489
Thanks Cora, My mother liked sugar in her corn bread and I like it also, so I will try your recipe for me and my daughter. Hubby likes his without sugar. Thanks so much. Thanks Paul, I sent my cousin to the store and she got Moss self-rising white corn meal, hope this works as well as Martha White. When I go to the store I will get a 2 lb. bag of all brands. We have a hard time finding any side meat or plain old fat back for beans and greens as they say its a seasonal item sold November & December. I guess this is progress in Colonial Heights, Va. Sorry, we were raised on a mess of beans and a chunk of fat back. Thanks again, Dorothy & Calvin **************Start the year off right. Thanks for hints. The corn bread recipe that my husbands Mom made by memory was one used by Mattie Veril Thompson. I always wondered why the she never used any oil or eggs in the batter. Always came out perfect. Hope mine turns out this time. I will try all the recipes and hints. Will let you know how if I have to throw it out to the birds. Ole Paul said to use Mayonnaise, have to try this because my cornbread was grainy!! Thanks, Dorothy & Calvin **************Start the year off right.
