    3. Phoebe: Two of my three children were born at New Altamont (1958 & 1959). I always told them they were born in a Nissan dealership and that Dr. Grubb was the salesman. I was one of the first occupants in the middle school across the street. As soon as it was finished, we moved the entire school from the old building up on the hill and across town to the new digs. We walked it - with NO police escort. 3. Dr. Showalter was the best doctor I encountered at the hospital. In 1952 Dr. Caldwell and Dr. Grubb wanted to operate on me for appendicks removal. Thank goodness I dind't give in and never had to have the operation. Dr. Clark was kind of a drive by doctor as I recall. He would see anyone and the cost back then was maybe a couple of dollars. I only recall Mayor Palmer in Cambria. Had a store and made photos for Life magazine and others as I recall. 3. When we moved to Christiansburg in 1980's, the Nissan dealership was still at the old hospital site. He flew this really huge American flag over the dealership, which brought comments from my husband who would never buy anything not made in the US. 2. Mary C Williams
    3. Last night when Donna sent through those links that mentioned the hospital, the first was a history of nearby Cambria, interesting to me as I worked there seven years. I quickly scanned the pages, looking for mention of the hospital and near the end it said Dr. Showalter started Altamont hospital in one of the buildings there. It had to have been very small. So, when he built the one in Christiansburg, it was called New Altamont, and that's why New was added to the name. Mary

The main building was small and had two large plate glass windows separated by the entrance door. In the left window was a neon sign that said simply, EAT. 3. I worked for Kenneth Thompson when he had Nissan car dealership in the old New Altimont Hospital building. He added that front part for showroom. Original hospital rooms were sales offices and my Bookkeeping office was also one of original rooms. Corrinne is Kenneth's sister and I believe if you visited the inside you would remember the brick front of Hospital. He kept the door from Surgery and used it from showroom to Service area and still had word "Surgery" in glass on door. Old hand pull elevator was also still in use at dealership to send parts to the upstairs part of building. Was a very interesting place and had lots of people come in and say they were born there. Kenneth still owns the building I believe. 3. Sorry. I'm the one who caused the confusion. What you have on the Smiths agrees with mine. The Problem with the Smith line was the marriage registration which showed Wm Bartons parents as J.P. Smith and Ann Howery. My info show Alfred Walker as well. As far as the Duncans I thought Joshua William Duncan was a brother to Lillie Alice but have since decided he was a brother in law. Both were Duncans. I am only today, finding out about the Duncan side. You have added some info to what I have already found.
