Regina, the stones have names on them, but I have never seen them...Howard Mannon re-set the stones years ago and told me about them.....Paul keep the mail comin' to Ole Paul
Kay and Mizz Kat... I also keep all the operating manuals of my appliances and other electronic gear or anything else that mey need repair or replacement.. When I was younger, (about 1950) I took a course on small appliance repair thru the mail..that was B.C. (before computers)...needless to say, ALL that info is far outdated today, and I am a real dummy on this new stuff, as well as tne newer cars, too...you used to be able to take a tin can and a piece of wire and fix those older cars..nowadays you cant even get your hands in the engine area...I trained as a mechanic in the military, but all that is passe now, too... I bought a Jenn-Aire range and it is still so complicated that I can hardly use it and I have had it for 5 years now..it is all push-button controlled with a memory built in....I am now going to go to the screw-in fluorescent light bulbs as they are longer-lasting but 5 times as expensive......PHEW!!!!! .... Sorta' like the old saying,...... I bought a wooden whistle, but it wooden whistle,..I bought a steel whistle but it steel wouldn't whistle..I bought a lead whistle but momma wouldn't lead me whistle, ..I bought a tin whistle and now I tin whistle......Ole Paul keep the mail comin' to Ole Paul
Paul, As far as I know, Uncle Columbus was buried in Floyd Co. His full name was Christopher Columbus Altizer, his first wife died, and he remarried. Hi Mizz Kat -- I second Lois's suggestion. I never start any repair without my copy of my good ole Reader's Digest. I am widowed and haven't an extra dime to spare for anything besides parts. First I pray, then I read the instructions, then I go buy the parts and there you have it. I also wanted to say that when you overcome all these problems, you will have a home that is strictly yours with your stamp all over it. Then if anything messes up, you will go to the manuals that came with your parts (and you saved in a folder) and be able to get things going again. You can do it! According to information posted on Crockett Duncan, his wife was Mary Ellen Duncan -daughter of Beauford Duncan 1831-1905 and Sarah Elizabeth Simmons 1838 -1907 According to the marriage registration of their daughter Lillie Alice to William Barton Smith, Lillie Alices' mother was Ellie Hawley. Later census show his wife as Mary E Duncan, but Ellie could a nickname for Ellen. Beauford and Sarah did have a daughter named Mary E. but is this Crocketts wife or is a Mary Ellen "Ellie" Hawley his wife as indicated on the marriage registration?
John - Regina, Questions...John, where on Walton Road was that "Rock Road School" located? I grew up in Radford and attended schools there. Interested to know about the Christiansburg Grammer school, don't remember hearing about it before. I lived on Walton Road in 60's after getting married we bought first house. Regina, I knew your sister Barbara Jean and she was a very pretty girl. Several years older than me. I knew your family from church and remember you as a very pretty little girl also. John, you moved around a lot and know all the schools. Enjoy all the info everyone offers. I can relate to your story of returning to the old elementary school. A few years ago, before my dad passed away, I accompanied him up to Dayton OH for his high school reunion...with many of his other 80+ year old classmates. It was so much fun. While touring around Dayton and seeing places Dad knew as a kid, we went to the old school where he attended 1st grade. It is now "Maggie's," a bar and grill type place on the Dixie Highway. Dad was really tickled, though, that he could have his photo made right on the same steps he used to climb to go to school every day. Of course, we had to go in and have a burger just so we could say we'd had lunch at school. Dad thought it was a hoot. That was one of the best all around trips of my life. Dad took me all over the city and showed me places where he played, worked, and lived. We took pictures at the old family home. We have a photo from the late 1800s showing his own dad out front as a small child. It was fascinating to stand in the exact same spot and add our own photo to the family collection. We went out to Woodland Cemetery and visited the grave sites of my g-grandparents, great aunts, uncles, etc. (just up the hill from the Wright Brothers!) I think that everyone should take the time to share something like this with their kids and grandkids. Now that Dad is gone, I treasure that trip and have a deep connection with my ancestry and the places my "people" came from. Mary, John, Regina, Edgar, Paul, Phoebe, Mary, et al, What an outpouring of remembrances for the hospital and the cafe'. John: My aunt Opal, who worked at the hospital spoke often of Dr. Grubb(s). Phoebe: The Kenneth Thompson you speak of owns a former farm and home place of my grandparents James and Callie Simmons, most lately of 615 College St. The home place is at 6364 Little Camp Road, just on the Montgomery Co. side of Little River. The house, still standing, is where I was born in 1936. They resided there from 1916 to 1936 before moving to a farm on "the Roanoke Road" (US 11) and thence to College Street. Regina: Danny Simmons is my first cousin, and a fine fellow. We had a Simmons family reunion in Dublin last summer, and I got to see Danny and his wife Kathy (sawsrus@wcgnet.us), They live in W. Va. Send me an email if you want to know more about them. Bill: I got emotional (but I'm an old softee) reading your account of the Camp Comfort cabins and your Sunday trek for ice cream "on a stick." Jerry Lester
Regina: I spent my first 2 years at Rock Road School (on the Walton Road), then to Christiansburg Primary (Junkin St.) and then to Christiansburg Grammar School, then located on East Main and I believe School Lane - only a few blocks from the Primary School. A couple years ago I took my wife to the old Grammar School. They were converting it to apartments. I guess I looked suspicious and the owner came out to see what I wanted. When he found out I went to school there, I got the red carpet treatment. He showed me around and asked a bunch of questions about the old place. They are keeping the old oiled floors in the hallway. We both parted company knowing more than when we met. I can't remember exactly what year it was that we moved, but I was probably in the 6th. grade - which would have made it around 1954-1955. The new school was close enough to down town, and we would go down almost every day for a hot dog. I even got a whipping once there for shooting firecrackers. I wasn't shooting firecrackers, nor did I have any but punishment in those days was swift and sure - even for the innocent. I wasn't shooting firecrackers, but I was smoking cigarettes - but smoking was not a punishable offense in those days. >From there I went to Dry Valley for 2 years, and then on to Auburn. John, Where was the old school building? I started school in 1956 and went to the primary school on Junkin street. Then, went to the Annex school, two story and very old, was that it? My sister, Barbara Altizer graduated in 1952, did you by any chance know her? I always told them they were born in a Nissan dealership and that Dr. Grubb was the salesman. I was one of the first occupants in the middle school across the street. As soon as it was finished, we moved the entire school from the old building up on the hill and across town to the new digs. We walked it - with NO police escort. Did you know a Danny Simmons that lived right down the street between where your Grandparents lived and where I lived on College st. It would have been mid 50's, I have been trying to find out what happened to him for my brother as they were great friends, and he has always wondered what happened to him. His family eventually moved away. Were you by any chance related to him?
