Back by popular demand...we are headed back to the lovely town of Hillsville again! Since my kids have a 4 day weekend off from school, we're going to make a whirlwind trip (1500 miles) up and back to see what else we can get done. My hubby gets to go this time, so we will take his big old pick up truck up there and haul off the mountain of trash the previous owners left us. One thing I LOVE about small towns is that you find out all the good dirt pretty quickly. Turns out that the reason we got our dream house SO quick and SO reasonably was that the folks who lived there had reportedly been dabbling in illegal substances and decided to git while the gittin' was good since they had attracted the attention of the neighbors...and the law. Besides, it turns out that the hubby had apparently (according to town people) found himself a new gal pal, so he was ready to deal and get on the road. Oh, well...their loss is our gain. Of course, they high tailed it out of there so quick, they left all their trash, but we can cope with that on this trip. This will be my 5th trip to VA in 4 months (along with a trip to Chicago and one to Chattanooga, TN.) I am turning into the quite the world traveler...ha! Can't wait to finally get moved into my country house and find the time to STAY put! I'm gonna put me a rockin' chair on that front porch and sip outta my jug of thornapple juice while the watermelon gets cold in the creek! Yee haw! MizzKat

Carlisle: I am a misfit. Both my mother and father were raised up in Washington County, Virginia. She was in Radford College and he was working for the Norfolk & Western Railroad in Radford. They got married and lived around Radford from the early 1920's. My father was adopted, but he was from the Dunns in North Carolina. My mother is from the Mann / Handy / Taylor / Lewis clans, also of Ashe county, North Carolina. My wife is Addie Lovell, daughter of Albert and Nora Baker Lovell. Albert was born in Dry Valley. His parents were William Thomas & Sarah Addie Phlegar Lovell. Tom was from Pulaski county, and Sarah Addie was from Floyd. Tom and Sarah are buried at the Laurel Hill Church of Christ above Meadow Creek in Dry Valley. Addie's mother (Nora) was the daughter of Fugate Lee and Sarrah Branson Baker, both from Carroll county, Virginia. That's our connection. John in Ohio John L. I also keep all the operating manuals of my appliances and other electronic gear or anything else that mey need repair or replacement.. I bought a Jenn-Aire range and it is still so complicated that I can hardly use it and I have had it for 5 years now..it is all push-button controlled with a memory built in....I am now going to go to the screw-in fluorescent light bulbs as they are longer-lasting but 5 times as expensive......PHEW!!!!! .... Hi All, I continue to attempt documenting the cemeteries of the county with only 2 (female) helpers and we have a great time just going to these cemeteries. Ole Paul had told about this particular cemetery a couple years ago and I'd kept it in my file of ones to visit. Last week, one of my partners, Jo Parr, and I stopped by Ole Paul's to learn more about the whereabaouts of this Christopher Columbus Altizer Cemetery in order to document it. We had had a busy day in the Alum Ridge section of this beautiful county and the wind was much stronger and colder than we expected. So, even tho' we wanted badly to visit this cemetery, when we learned that it is located on a bluff overlooking the River, we decided to put off visiting it for a more serene day. BUT, we shall get it documented and marked with GPS, and you'll know about it. Can you wait? I don't have much patience, but I just must wait until the right time to visit it.
