Norma: I was born and raised on old Route 11, about 2 miles out of Radford (then - it's incorporated now). To exactly pinpoint it, head out of town on Tyler Avenue, past the Best Western, and turn left in front of the Super 8. We lived about 3/8 mile down there on the right, our property bordering Old Route 11 and Rock Road. All that land from the old town limits to our house belonged to Herbert (Hub) Gibson. In fact, it was called Gibsondale. Their house stood on the left corner across from the Super 8. Both theirs and ours have been torn down. My father, Frank Ford worked for the Norfolk & Western in Radford until he died in 1941 - 3 months after I was born. My mother and I had a railroad pass until she remarried. I still recall the old steam engines pulling into Radford with all their hissing and chugging and spitting out steam. I remember the trips to Chilhowie, how in places you could look out the windows and see the engine way up ahead blowing smoke and cinders. I remember the train station smells and the toys they sold and the little paper cups of water on the trains. I remember the conductor calls as we approached a town - Puuu-las-kee; Weethhh-viiile; Mar-iooon and Chill - oo - wee. But I'm rambling. You probably guessed I still have trains in my blood. It's been my goal to ride every surviving steam engine in the USA before I die. Probably won't happen, but I've got a good start. I married Addie Lovell, also from Radford and moved to Ohio in 1960, but we still have kin folks down there and usually make 1-2 trips a year. I know exactly where your house would have been located. And, I remember my father speaking of "Hub" Gibson. We also rode the railroad on a pass. Mostly, we rode from Radford to Bristol or Radford to Roanoke. On one trip, we went to Norfolk and went to Virginia Beach. Several times, we would get the train in Christiansburg and go north to Portsmouth, Ohio. That was an overnight trip and I got to sleep in a "sleeper car". My father worked for the railroad in Radford as a Machinist until his retirement in the early 60's. I lived in town,on Clement Street, just 1/2 block from Radford University ("College" at that time). Did you attend Radford High School or Christiansburg? Have you ever visited the railroad museum in Roanoke? It's located in the old train station there. We drove by the Fish House in Hillsville today and it does seem to be closed. We went to the Chinese restaurant next to the Interstate, however, and had an awesome lunch!! The food is really great. We are so pleased because we hated to leave our favorite restaurant behind in Florida. Now, we feel at home! We are official Virginians now. We have a PO box and bank account in Hillsville. We also got ALL that trash hauled off (that the previous owners left us...) It took three BIG loads in the pick up truck carried out to the land fill. Nothing like dumping trash in 29 degrees with the snow blowing! At least now, my Florida children know what they are in for in the winter up here...ha! Can't wait until summer when we can finally get moved up and settled in!! (And of course, it will be warmer!) Well all, As I told MizzKat this week, Ocean Bay is a great seafood place and those hushpuppies are the best. I ate there this past Sunday, I had Oysters and so many hushpuppies that I brought leftovers home and they were great microwaved for lunch Mon/Tues at work!! Good food and good prices. Norma: You're right. There's no light where I thought it was - but there really needs to be. I know where the restaurant is now - just had to program my brain. Thanks for the offer, but I really don't need a Wytheville map. I made my first trip through there in 1941 - on a train. We lived in Radford and my grandparents lived in Chilhowie, so we used to have to go through Wytheville on old Route 11 every time we went down. We still do (often) stay in Wytheville since it's fairly central to all of our kin down there, and Wytheville is only 6 hours via I77 north to our place. Thanks! Hey John! Glad you don't need the map. I scanned it and it came out real good, but when I try to send it, it is just so big that it won't go. Where did you live in Radford? I am from Radford. I used to travel by train when I went places also as my family were railroad people. Norma John Ford wrote: > Norma: > > You're right. Correction...it is Skipper's Seafood Restaurant in Stuart, VA (Patrick Co.) Paul keep the mail comin' to Ole Paul
Norma: You sure it's at exit 73 - left at first light? The only thing I know there is a Quality Inn, gas station and Shoneys up on the hill. There's also a good seafood house in Abingdon - I believe it's called the Harbor House. I see where there is a Skippy's Seafood Restaurant in Stuart, VA has anyone tried it? Ole Paul keep the mail comin' to Ole Paul
Yes, take exit 73. To the best of my knowledge, there is no light at the street where you turn to go to Shoneys, etc. Don't turn there or go up on the hill...continue on until you get to the first light....approximately 2 blocks on down that street, which is Main Street. Ocean Bay is on the left side of the street. I have a map of the area. If you will send your e-mail address, I will scan it and send it to you. Thanks, Norma, I didn't know the exit or traffic lights. All I remember is how good the food was, and I can't wait to go back.
