John, I went to school with Carl Whitt. We graduated from Radford High School in 1955. Carl put together a wonderful DVD for our 50th class reunion. Did you know Molly Whitt? She lived on Howe Street in Radford in the 50's. She was in the class of '55 also. She had several brothers and sisters. She passed away a few years ago in Maryland. It was 7 degrees in Draper this morning when we got up about 7 a.m. Alice ----- Original Message ----- From: "John Ford" <johnlford@embarqmail.com> To: <vafloyd@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, January 20, 2008 9:08 AM Subject: Re: [VAFLOYD] not genealogy--back to my Ole Virginny home Norma: My uncle and aunt lived on Clement Street - Jim & Pearl Whitt. Edgar, My Mother rented out rooms to workers at the Radford Ordnance Plant during the WWII boom. We lived on Clement Street. The big white house (it has been torn down and is now a parking lot) directly behind the First Christian Church on Tyler Avenue . My Dad worked at the Arsenal. There were several on Clement Street that keep boarders. A Mrs. Dixon, also cooked meals for these workers. We moved from Clement Street to First Avenue (one block from Tyler) between Downy and Clement. After my Dad died, my Mother sold it to a realtor who turned it into apts. and added an addition to the house with apts. for college students. It is so sad to see that area where Norma, Phoebe and I grew up. We have such fond memories of our childhood on Clement Street. Do you know a June Vest that lives in Pulaski? She lives at the Village (apartments that I manage). I saw the 'Long Way Home' outdoor drama several times and do remember Bobby Collins. I did not know him but enjoyed his performances in the drama. My Mom used to have boarders in the early days of Radford Arsenal. Where did you board? My home was sold and then sold again to one of the local realtors who turned it into student housing. I can hardly stand to see it these days. In fact, when I have occasion to be in that end of town, I make a point not to look at it or drive by that way. It is just too sad to see the way it has been mistreated. The tea room you mentioned at St. Albans (or Kings as you mentioned), is a lovely restaurant which specializes in a wonderful Sunday Buffet. It is quite popular with the after church folks...in fact, it is a good idea to make a reservation before going. Although, I have been a few times without reservation and they always manage to accommodate my group. It is called Baker's Best and they also do catering. They catered my high school class reunion last summer...de-lish!!! http://www.thebakersbest.com/ Norma Edgar Vest wrote: > I attended the Long Way Home several times and am sure he was part of > the actors. Rena, congrats on the new furnace. I can relate to no heat. I remember when I was a kid Dad would "bank" the fire in the Warm Morning stove. He would be up first to get the fire goin the next morning. We kids would jump out of bed and run in around the stove to put our clothes on. It not suppose to get above freezin here until almost the middle or end of this week Brrrrrrrrr. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Kat Fulcher" <kfulcher55@gmail.com> To: <vafloyd@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, January 20, 2008 7:23 AM Subject: Re: [VAFLOYD] not genealogy--Temp > Hooray for your new furnace!!! Any of y'all Radford people know my mother in law? She lives in Radford on Preston St. (but lived for many years in a big house on 7th st.) Her name is June Collins and her late husband was Brady Collins. Her younger son (also passed on now) was Bobby Collins who was well known as a featured actor in the "Long Way Home" outdoor drama. just wonderin, since the conversation had turned to Radford... My husband's 1st step-dad also worked for the railroad and Clay says he remembers riding back and forth from Virginia Beach to come visit his grandmother until the family moved back to Radford. He says that they used to get off in Christiansburg because his mama didn't want to have to change trains in Roanoke to get to Radford. We are glad to hear you have a working furnace now. I bet you do appreciate what our ancestors, even some of our parents, besides your mom, went thru during bad/winter weather. I know a relative of mine is waiting for tax time to get their furnace/heat pump replaced and have been dealing with no AC or heat for almost a year and a half now. And they are 27 and 30 years old. Kind of unusual they would go that long people that age, isn't it. Not all people their age would do that. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Rena Worthen" <doreatr@rbnet.com> To: <vafloyd@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, January 19, 2008 11:41 PM Subject: Re: [VAFLOYD] not genealogy--Temp > > The temp here is 31 but is due to be down about 17 by morning. > We are forcasted to get snow tonight again. The temp here is 31 but is due to be down about 17 by morning. We are forcasted to get snow tonight again. If so maybe the temp will stay up abt freezing. The good news is my new furnace was installed this evening and for the first time since Christmas day, i'm warm. We don't know how much we take things for granted until we don't have something. I can relate to our fore parents now. You know all the things we have would have been unheard of 100 years ago. Rena
It is not snowing here, but do still have about 2 or 3 inches on the ground. I was down to -12 F.. last night and is at 0 degrees at 10p.m. with wind chill of -12 degrees. I'll be glad to see spring come. John Sowers in Lawrence, KS researching Sowers, John, Miller, Booth. Eller, Sargent and other related families. sowgenealogy@sunflower.com
Snowing just to your north, in Bon Air, as well. Still in the mid 30's though. Not too bad for mid January. Dave From: <DMea986657@aol.com> Its snowing here in Colonial Heights, Virginia!! Very Cold. Dorothy
