Yep the names you mention come back to mind now. I worked with Gerald Phillips at the powder plant and he was a ex-Clover Creamery worker. I remember Paul when I was young and walked to Doc and Effie Jewell's store in Otey community of Montgomery county that they owned stock in Clover Creamery that also had a plant in Roanoke and also stock in Crockett Springs Hotel. I think Dock took my nephew to doctor/hospital in Christiansburg when my nephew was bitten by a copperhead snake near the Crockett Springs Hotel. Edgar, across on the other corner from the Bear Market was Umbergers store..I used to watch for the delivery truck to stop there and unload..I would run in there ASAP and ask for a pack of cigarettes as they were scarce back then and I knew they had cigarettes when that truck brought them from Gordon-Dalton wholesale house which was behinf the First & Merchants Bank in the east end... I lived in the west end, and also in the east end of Radford.......I lived up over Whitehead's Drug store which was on the corner in east end ..just 1/2 a block up the side street..(I think it was 3rd ave) was Bibee's Supermarket where we bought groceries....there were 3 theaters in Radford.... the state theater and the Radford theater in the east end and another theater in the west end.... I worked at Clover Creamery and ate quite a bit at Betty's Steak House across from the west end theater.....Jake Scott had a hole-in-the wall restaurant beside that theater where he sold hot dogs, 2 for 15 cents. but he cut the weiner in half the long way and put 1/2 of a weiner on each hot dog...Wade's Supermarket is where the creamery stood back then... Ole Paul keep the mail comin' to Ole Paul
The woman I boarded with was maybe in 70's and had a grandson. No husband and was one of the streets off of the bvld. by the college. This street was absorbed by the college many years ago. The old building where Bear Market was in across from the old fire station was made into apartments a few years ago. Calvin Whitt was fire chief and seems like the police chief at one time was a Whitt. I'm sure you remember the unsolved murder of the Turpin woman. Was Mick or Mack on main street? What about Piggly Wiggly store in Radford? I worked with Frank Robertsion at RAAP and he worked at one of these grocery stores. I also worked with "Bob" Miller that lived in east Radford that killed his wife and then himself. At least they still have the movie theater on main street. No Radford today is not like it was in the 1940-1970 years. I suggested this two weeks ago but there was not a single person on the list that helped at all. rena does not know I am doing this at all and would shoot me if she did, but I know how hard things have been for her. I am sure that she would appreciate anything at all--all of this plus the oil needs to be paid for. Those that can help I am sure will. There were 3 brothers I know of, Jim, Sam and Fred. A daughter, Barbara married Cid Johnson and at one time was in the dairy business in Ferrum. I think we're on the right track. I'll be waiting on Carl's reply to John in Ohio. I think Richard (Dick) was Molly Whitt's father if I remember correctly and would be brother to Carl's father, Jim. My parents knew the families. Molly and I were really good friends and she has a younger sister Barbara Whitt Johnson who lives at Claytor Lake. Molly passed away a few years ago. There were several siblings in that family. Carl will confirm that I believe. Kat: I asked Addie about the Collins family, but she doesn't remember them. My foster brother lived for years on Preston Street - Buddy (Delmar Frank) and Virginia Wirt Ford. Virginia claimed to be the meanest woman in Radford, and I believe her. Buddy was a drunk and Virginia told us she was marrying him just to teach him a lesson. I guess she did. Buddy quit drinking. No big surprise. Buddy was a runt and Virginia was at least 6" taller and probably 50 pounds heavier than him. Even in his death she was mean. Poor Buddy was dead, cremated and buried before any of the family knew about it. Last count she's still alive. She lives in Radford on Preston St. (but lived for many years in a big house on 7th st.) Her name is June Collins and her late husband was Brady Collins. Her younger son (also passed on now) was Bobby Collins who was well known as a featured actor in the "Long Way Home" outdoor drama. just wonderin, since the conversation had turned to Radford... My husband's 1st step-dad also worked for the railroad and Clay says he remembers riding back and forth from Virginia Beach to come visit his grandmother until the family moved back to Radford. He says that they used to get off in Christiansburg because his mama didn't want to have to change trains in Roanoke to get to Radford. Kat
