Edgar, Thanks for that info. You know they have changed the road now and the store , that Roscoe ran, has went thru several business but is still there. I never knew Riley Poff but who could ever forget Roscoe. Roscoe would go down to Rainbow bakery and get all the outdated bread and cakes to "feed the hogs" but all of us kids would be tickled to death to get a hold of some of those cakes and cookies. As long as we didn't see mold on them , we would eat them. But, once I bit down on a honey bun and when I went to take another bite there was half a wiggling worm in the bun. I bet it was 30 years before I would eat another honey bun. Is the house that is across from the store , the original Riley Poff house or have all the originals been torn down? Phoebe I knew Riley Poff in early 1940's. He had a country store on US 221 going toward Roanoke as you left Copper Hill and cleared the sharp curve his store, house and farm land was on right side of road. He owned a special ordered truck that had gears ratio that made the top speed of maybe 45 or 50 miles per hour. He had apple orchard, raised cattle and etc. Roscoe Craighead had a store later on the left side of road. I remember he had a storage of paint that had arsenic as one ingredient in it and the cattle ate the paint and got poisoned. My how can some of the memories of yesteryear pop up in one's mind. ok...that just ruined honey buns for me! Yikes. Reminds me of the Chinese meal I ate in Blacksburg years ago. (The place is no longer there...thank the Lord) I looked down into my plate and said to my friend, "Tell me that is NOT half a cockroach in my plate." She couldn't answer because, of course, it WAS! The thought of where that other half was sort of ruined the meal. When I called the waitress over, she said, "Oh, sorry. Would you like a new plate?" Nope, just the way out!!! Eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeew. ===================== From: Rena Worthen <doreatr@rbnet.com> Date: 2008/01/28 Mon PM 10:22:23 CST To: vafloyd@rootsweb.com Subject: [VAFLOYD] Coffin builders & Undertakers I am looking for information about, and the records of C. M. Graham , J. C. Willis, Hylton & Harman, H. L. Vest, George Huff, J. A. Hylton, L. W. Gray, E. L. Thomas, J. C. Willis, R. J. Sowers, L. L. Gallimore, E. L. Thomas, H. G. Caldwell, S. W. Lawrence, D. W. Slusher, G. T. Spangler & Co., R. E. Conner, M. C. Phillips, I. J. Dickerson, Wm. Spangler, L. A. Hylton, J. W. Gray & Co., I. F. Martin, D. M. Akers, J. H. Johnson, G. P Whitlow, L. S. Wade, S. J. Agnew, Rufus Harris, Riley Poff, J. C. Hollandsworth. Does anyone know what the full names are of the above list? Where did they do business in Floyd County? All of these names are listed as the undertaker on Floyd County death certificates in the early 1900's. I am hopeing to find the records for any of the above named Coffin builders or undertakers. If anyone knows of any receipts or ledgers for any of these people, i'd love to place the information on our Floyd website. I am compiling a list of early death certificate information when I go to Richmond. the actual copies are .75 cents each. I can't afford to pay for certificates, so i'm doing the next best thing, i'm writing the info down. I'm in the process of getting it typed up. I am working on several counties but I have a total of 650 names so far, and still typing. The info i'm gathering includes DC#, name, dob, dod, cemetery, undertaker, county & parents name. Another trip is planned in March, when I hope to get some more. Thank you all in advance. Rena ------------ G. T. (George) Spangler had a shop adjacent the school building in Floyd which is not The Fabric Shop. He was a "jack-of-all-trades". In his combination blacksmith and woodworking shop he built coffins, wagons, buggies and/or repaired most any thing you needed built or fixed. As a kid going to school there we would watch him and Ward build wagons. I especially remember him putting steel tires on wagon and buggy wheels. Also he would plane lumber for people. The planner, powered by a Model T car motor, made so much noise that it was difficult sometimes to think inside the school building. During WWII he would cut out the hull of a model ship from a pine 2x4 for us to build. I recall building several. Antique dealers would probably go wild today over some of the models we built. Maybe some of his grandkids or great grandkids still have his ledgers. Jack Spangler Ellicott City, MD

Rena, could you also forward this on to Della Dirickson in Charlottesville, VA? This is additional marriage info on two of Theoderick Gibson's sons. This comes from the same Franklin Co. marriage books cited previously. George M. Gibson, age 21, m. Jan 19, 1882 in FrCoVa to Amanda Hale, age 18, d/o David Hale & America Ann Easter (David & America m. Jun 7, 1847) James Gibson, age 21, m. Jun 21, 1894 in FrCoVa, to Mary E. Altic, age 16, d/o Lee Altic & Nancy __________. (I found a Levi Altick, age 20, m. Aug 29, 1872 to a Nannie Nichols, age 20--this is the closest I could find, and might not be Nancy's parents) I checked the female index for Gibsons for Elizabeth, Analize, Martha, Sarah & Mary and found none of them listed as being married in FrCoVa during the periods covered by the 3 books. I note in the female index in Floyd Co., an Annie L. Gibson who m. Albert Grant Winters in 1886, Book 3, page 102. The only way to know if she was the d/o Theoderick would be to check at the courthouse for her parents' names. A possibility she could be Analize (Annie Liza?) In a book I have on the Prillaman family, page B21, Peter Gibson is shown with his 13 children. I note Mrs. Dirickson lists his middle name as Lenan and that is probably right, but this researcher listed his middle name as Lamon for 12 of the children and Lemon for the other one. In the Franklin County Cemetery book, I note one for John R. Gibson, b. Nov 18, 1874, d. Mar 2, 1951, (father - on stone) buried in Jacob Prillaman Cemetery, on 642, 1/2 mi. W of Piedmont Church; on left of 642 4/10 mi. from 602 at Callaway, VA, fenced, very well maintained. In the same cemetery is Mattie L. Gibson, b. Mar 2, 1889, d. May 19, 1957 (mother - on stone)

I didn't intend to send this to the list. Need to watch the address section more careflly. I don't know if you are continuing your wife's genealogy or not. She had sent me this informtion and since I have found the family in the state of Washington. Most of them aree buried in the Hillcrest llBurial Park in Kent, WA. I took digital photos of the headstones if you are interested. Irene and I exchanged much information and both belonged to the VAFLOYD list. I noticed a while back that Rena said you were on the list using your wife's email addy. John Sowers in Lawrence, KS researching Sowers, John, Miller, Booth. Eller, Sargent and other related families. sowgenealogy@sunflower.com
The listing for the White Rock Cemetery is in the Vol 1 Cemeteries- Floyd(Montgomery) County Va, Indian Valley District Book by Elza B. Cox and Phyllis G. Phillips. I have some Light relatives that are buried there, also. If you would like me to scan the pages and email them to you, just let me know. I know that my grandparents, Harvey & Frances Sina Dulaney Bishop, are buried there. And I would suspect that most of my Dulaney's are buried there as well. If anyone has this information or knows where I could get this, would appreciate it very much. Theoderick Gibson was my second great uncle. His sister, Sarah Amanda, born abt 1828, was my second great grandmother. She was with husband Peter Hale in 1860 census Frankin Co. plus 6 kids. (married 25 Nov 1850 in Franklin Co.) They were in 1870 census also. I would be interested in additional information on Johathan and Matty Gibson and any other children they may have had. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Mary C Williams" <marycwms@verizon.net> To: <vafloyd@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, January 26, 2008 6:26 PM Subject: Re: [VAFLOYD] Fw: Gibson Family of Floyd Count >I found this information in Marriages of Franklin County, 1853-1875, by > Beverly Merritt, page 19. > Theoderick* F.
