I was in Fairbanks at midnight and the sun was high in the sky. It is beautiful there, lots of wonderful homes on the river. My sister-in-law and her husband live in North Pole, Alaska. They loved it and now thinking about moving back u[ there. Helen (my sister-in-law) did a lot of art work when there . When they had the BIG earth quake, she went and dug up the clay that the quake was pushing up, she made pottery things out of this clay, when fired it turned into beautiful colors. I have a few of the things that she made and sold there. Herhusband Don, retired from the telephone company a few years agp and that is why they moved. They raised their two sons there and have wonderful memories of living there. *I don't know if anyone on this forum gets Esther Johnson's e-mail or not , since this one includes the rock churches that are in Floyd County I thought someone might enjoy reading her article and seeing the pictures. I will send again later but on Sept 8, 2008 Randle Brim will speak at the SCGA meeting about the Beautiful Rock Churches Bob Childress and his congregations built in different places along the Parkway. There is a book called, "The Man Who Moved A Mountain" that tells the story about Bob Childress and the churches. If you have never read this book you are missing out on a wonderful part of the history from this area. Bob Childress was an amazing man. I know Pages Book store in Mt. Airy has this Book and you may find it on Amazon.com. Now Randle Brim is writing a book about the churches. The attachments are about the research Randle has been doing on the churches. Thanks to everyone who writes these wonderful books about our ancestors. All my past articles from the Simple Pleasures related to Bob Childress and the Rock Churches were used by the State of Virginia to help place the Six Rock Churches on the National Register of Historical Places. They got in touch with me about two plus years ago, and asked if I would help them and if they could use my printed material. The Six Churches were placed on the Virginia State Landmarks Historical Register in Richmond, Va. on Dec. 6, 2006, and they were listed on the National Register of Historical Places on March 26, 2007. The churches have not yet had the time nor the co-ordination to obtain the actual signs. About a half year ago, the Blue Ridge Regional Visitors Center at I-77 at Hillsville, Va. got in touch with me and ask me to help write and to design a brochure for the rock churches. Those brochures have been printed and have been circulated for about the past 3 or 4 months. It is my understanding that they are getting a great reception. They are also passed out to the Tour Buses that have visited the churches. Attached is a copy of the brochure. No, I wasn't, I was just getting ready to graduate from high school that Good Friday morning. But I had an uncle stationed at Elmendorf and it was partly due to his letters to my mom that started me yearning for the adventure. I didn't go to Alaska until 73, just before the pipeline boom. My 2nd husband and I and my 3 kids drove the Alcan, bought a new two story 4 bedroom house for 43, 000 in Eagle River. We had many wonderful adventures, built our own super cub, both learned to fly, but he crashed it while hunting 5 years after we were there. I should have stayed but I missed the rest of my family in 'the Lower 48', sold our house for $170,000. The economy was still going up, too. I missed Alaska and 5 years later took my kids back and we lived in Homer, the Halibut fishing capital of the world!! I still miss Alaska, but I can't talk all of my kids into going back with me! Rena, I wonder if Bobby-in-Florida can break this master list into sections (indexed) like he did the Pulaski Co. list? WebTv has a hard time with LARGE files...................Paul keep the mail comin' to Ole Paul
This list is growing fast thank's to Bobby-in-Florida. It is over 1300 names now. I hope this will be useful to many of you. http://www.rootsweb.com/~vafloyd/masterburiallistfcva11feb2008.htm Now i've fed my children some new info, i'm off to rest. LoveYall, Rena
I should have put in "NOT Genealogy" as well. We'll all have to take MIZZ KAT's advice and do better. Let's do a little genealogy in the mix as well. I'm off to bed BUT, i'll be watching you with one eye, when I can find a good sturdy toothpick. Rena
On Sunday morning when I woke up, i checked my mail, and read the newspaper, all the things I usually do, Then I went to the library to look at some marriage film that I had borrowed from Richmond. Everything went well I finished 1909, 1910, 1911 and started on 1912. By this time I was tired so I came home to a dark cold house. The wind had been realy bad all day, and since I live in an old house-trailer, I felt safer in a bigger building anyway. Sometime about 12-1 today they finally got my electric back on. Mom called me at work to let me know. I thought OH! great all's good, then I couldn't remember if I had left the water faucet outside on when I drained the system out, so out the door I ran to come home and check on everything. The water was ok, and when I got out of the car the furnace was running, what a welcome sound, HEAT finally once again. Anyway I hope the weather stays favourable, and the rain we're having puts out the fires that are burning on the mountains around us. The smoke is terrible, the visibility is poor and the air quality is also poor. I haven't rested well in the past 3 nights, so no web work will get done tonight. I have some nice additions to add, but they will have to wait. Thank you for beeing good in my absence. Rena
I just realized I am REALLY guilty of not changing the subject line and not stating "Not Genealogy" on the last several messages I sent. Figured I'd better confess and repent and do better quick now that Rena is back watching us! Sorry, Mom! MizzKat

Thank you Rena for all you do, have good nights sleep and hope the air is clear in the morning. Joyce in Ca -----Original Message----- From: vafloyd-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:vafloyd-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Rena Worthen Sent: Tuesday, February 12, 2008 4:23 PM To: vafloyd@rootsweb.com Subject: [VAFLOYD] I'm finally back On Sunday morning when I woke up, i checked my mail, and read the newspaper, all the things I usually do, Then I went to the library to look at some marriage film that I had borrowed from Richmond. Rena ********************************** Note from List Administrator!!! Jeanne, Bishop is a beautiful area. Were you in Alaska in 64 when the huge earthquake hit Anchorage? We have spent several summers in Soldotna on the Kenai river. We don't have to leave our country to see God's creations at it's best. Joyce in CA -----Original Message----- From: vafloyd-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:vafloyd-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Jeanne Mower Sent: Tuesday, February 12, 2008 4:56 PM To: vafloyd@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [VAFLOYD] Where is everybody Yeh, I'll take my chances with the earthquakes. I've been through some doozies in CA and Alaska. I grew up almost due east of you girls in Stockton then. When my dad moved us out of L.A. (Venice Beach and small earthquakes and tidal waves were my first experiences there) we lived in the Bishop/Mammoth Lakes area near the east side of Yosemite. In the 80's we had some very strong earthquakes that scientists say weren't related to Mt St Helens, but I don't think they have convinced the locals of that. Everytime St Helens decided to tremor our little dormant Mammoth Mt would shake her bootie. The Mt is on the San Andreas Fault Line. Then she scared away all the City of Angels skiers (boo hoo) with opening little steam vents of her own. Of course the locals have always known of all the 'hot creeks' and natural 'hot tubs' but we weren't going to tell the tourists! When I lived in Alaska it was normal procedure to have everyone's boots lined up at the door and a rack for the coats right above...and this wasn't just gor the cold weather! Right inside the coast closet was everyone's own 72 hour pack filled with custom emergency goodies. Outside was safer in Alaska because there wasn't the danger of falling power poles and buildings. We always lived out away from everyone else and the way the ground shakes there your house is more liable to falling down on you no matter what it is made of. That reminds me though of some construction men I knew then that were working on a steel frame design for homes that would sway. ....fairly stable, calm, and warm here in Bend, Jeanne On 2/12/08, B. I have a cousin that moved to Navarre back in the early to mid 90's . The hurricanes are his fault. They did not have that many for many years. Since he moved there, I have lost count of the Hurricanes that have it that area. I think he has been OUT of his flooded house more than he has been IN it. Told him to move to another state. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Kat Fulcher" <kfulcher55@gmail.com> To: <vafloyd@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, February 12, 2008 6:00 PM Subject: Re: [VAFLOYD] Where is everybody >I grew up in Ft. Small story for you: We lived in Ft. Walton Beach 30 years ago. We came home and had a yard full of water. We pulled the man cover and water went down like a drain in a tub. We get ready to move to NC, and husband has to pick the house out without me. All I said was Get me a house on a hill. And he did. We moved again. Not far away and I am about half a mile from a lake (at the moment empty, dam broke back in 2003.) But we are about 25 ft above Lakelevel when it is there. So I could one day have lake side property, but I seriously doubt it. And my driveway is just slightly up hill from the road. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Kat Fulcher" <kfulcher55@gmail.com> To: <vafloyd@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, February 12, 2008 5:33 PM Subject: Re: [VAFLOYD] Where is everybody > We know how y'all feel. Oh Rena...just had to smile at you saying 'thanks for being good while I was away'. Thanks for being such a sweet and caring mom!!!! I can't believe you've been spending time working at the library for us while you have no heat in your home, and hear you are explaining why you need to get sleep before "feeding" your youngun's. I grew up in Ft. Walton. Back in 1995, my folks were still living there, right on Cinco Bayou...as Hurricane Opal came through. We were in Virginia at the time and I called Dad to tell him to get everything out of the ground floor because the water was going to rise. He assured me that all was o.k. because he put the furniture up on 4 inch blocks! Unfortunately, they had 3 FEET of water go right through the downstairs! Rest of the house was fine, but sure made a BIG mess of the bottom part of the house. Fortunately, the house was sort of a tri-level thing and the bottom part was used mostly for storage. Lost some lovely antiques, though and a cedar chest full of old family photos. I will NOT miss hurricanes! Kat On Feb 12, 2008 4:53 PM, B. Yeh, I'll take my chances with the earthquakes.
