Greetings to all who might be interested: John, I cannot help you on this query, but everyone might be interested in an upcoming book on the mills of Floyd County. Some of you may remember that Frank Webb (now deceased) and Ricky Cox began this study a number of years ago, and Ricky now has it at the printers, or it will be quite soon. I'm looking forward to it, and I expect it should help many of us in our research. Thanks for the obit Mary. It gave me some info I didn't have and raised a bunch more questions. If only I could find some of the family to quiz. Don't know if any of this pertains to anyone on the list, but thought I would pass it on just in case. It is an Ebay listing for a whole lot of genealogical items referencing SW Virginia. Looks to me like things that ought to be in a museum somewhere!!! The URL for the site is listed after the description. Kat "Up for bids here is a wealth of information and treasures of the Bolen and Leftwich families, one of which (Bolen) are direct descendants of the marriage of Pocahontas and John Rolfe. There are letters, birth certificates, family trees, 17 tintypes, 10 photographs, newspaper clippings, what looks like an entire newspaper section from a Hillsville, Carroll County VA. paper dated 1920. The collection includes an old photograph album (looks Victorian or pre-Victorian),full of photos which are well labeled (see pic), all but one, which is a tintype of two soldiers with rifles who appear to be either Civil War or Spanish-AmericanWar. There is a mourning band, a woven ribbon, a leather folder; there are 63 paper items, including letters detailing the geneaology of the descendants of the union of Pocahontas and John Rolfe. This lot could be a great treasure for anyone from either of the Bolen or Leftwich families, their descendants, or anyone interested in Pocahontas and John Rolfe." http://cgi.ebay.com/Pocahontas-Rolfe-Leftwich-Bolen-Hillsville-VA-Records_W0QQitemZ170191706824QQihZ007QQcategoryZ20926QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
Am looking for information on the family of Caleb G. Epperly. He was listed as Garfield Epperly in the 1930 census of Roanoke County. Found him in the 1920 Alum Ridge Census. Not sure of the spelling of his wife's name and do not have her maiden name or their dat of marriage. Also could not read the daughter's name on the 1930 census listed age of 2 11/12. Does anyone have anything on the person. Found him in 1910 Census of Alum Ridge. His wife was listed as Willie K and occupation postmaster. His occupation was miller (flour Mill). one son listed as Roy F. then the whole family seem to dissappear. I scrolled thru the 1920 census of Alum Ridge, but the only Sowers I located were several of my dad's 1st cousins. His parents were Caleb and Nancy Sowers. Our beloved Great-Aunt Hettie Maywood (Reed) Craig passed away suddenly of a heart attack on Saturday February 9, 2008. She was 97 years old and was a resident of Copper Hill, Floyd County VA until age 4, when she moved with her parents (the late John Marchel Reed and Anne Cora (Nichols) Reed) and siblings to Harford County, Maryland. She was still maintaining her own home and driving occasionally. She had two daughters (one still living), ten grandchildren, twelve great-grandchildren, ten great-great-grandchildren, and two great-great-great grandchildren. She worked as a WW-II "Rosie the riveter" at the Martin Marietta Plant and later owned and operated "Craig's Grocery" with her husband in Edgewood, MD until 1975. She kept in contact with relatives in Floyd County, especially Dan Wilson who came to visit every summer until his death several years ago. Glenn and Nancy Randers-Pehrson
I miss the Northern Lights....it's true that you can hear them whisper, especially when you're out in the wilderness and the air is so cold...even the wolves and foxes stop to listen. ~~~Jeanne On 2/13/08, Joyce & Tom <jthawkin@pacbell.net> wrote: > > I was in Fairbanks at midnight and the sun was high in the sky. > > It is beautiful there, lots of wonderful homes on the river. I have alot of the pieces that was made from the clay up there, we also went gold panning and I have a few little pieces of gold that we found. The sking was great and the trips to Circle and all was gorgeous, especially in the fall when the trees were turning. We were stationed there and my husband still wants to retire there. He loves it there. We are a little older now so walking on snow and ice isn't the greatest thing for us right now. The Alaska Dividends were wonderful while we were there. I would go back in a minute to visit. We still have some friends who live in North Pole and would love to visit them again. check out my ebay store and auctions: Moorekids Thanks, Bonnie Moore > Date: Wed, 13 Feb 2008 14:54:45 -0800> From: lmqh@sbcglobal.net> To: vafloyd@rootsweb.com> Subject: Re: [VAFLOYD] jeanne> > My sister-in-law and her husband live in North Pole, Alaska.
