There is a Sarah E. Vest (May 31, 1880 - Nov. 21, 1887) buried in the Vest Cemetery. Does anyone know her parents? Thanks, Janice Smyth
Rena, when people like that get ugly on line, the only thing to do is say" Please feel free to unsuscribe, and have a nice day". I would love to find pictures of any of my ancestors online-be they horse thieves or proprietors of a house of ill repute. At least I would know they really existed. Might even make for interesting conversation at the next family reunion!! Take it easy and stay warm. Hope the furnace is still working for you and mom. More later. I am a quesenberry living in California, and have seen the name spelled many different ways.......Cushenbury, Quesenberry, Quessenberry, Quiosenberry, Questenbury, Quisenberg, and it goes on and on. I think that it was spelled the way it was pounced or the way census people heard it , Way back in the 1700's it was Von Questenburg. Very interrelating name! History is history and we should embrace it and be thankful that somebody is interested enough to even spend time researching our family ties.? EXPLOITATION ???????? Not---in fact I invite full exploitation of my 5 missing Tolbert sisters out of floyd County and into Pulaski Cty, Va in the mid to late 1800's.? I do not care what they were, weren't, could have been, looked like, smelled like, or "who shot John about".? They are lost in history and have remained that way thus far.? I look forward to rich history tidbits? EXAMPLE:? my moms Jones line has a famous "bearded Lady" who was the featured entertainer for the Barnum & Bailey Circus in the late 1800's.? Did I hush it up and hide it?? NOT... we can't change history so embrace it and appreciate it for what its worth...Bobby Talbert in Florida
Rena, I'm no lawyer, but it seems a tempest in a teapot to me. We seek to do no harm here, we don't seek to ridicule or belittle anyone's ancestry. Our purpose and desire is only to share family information (and the more I research, the more I realize that my mother was right, "...we're all related"). Simply putting Euphemia Breeding's photo up on a demure website for her probable family members and descendants of her neighbors to access is not "exploitation". If the photo is someone's personal property, that person should have kept it if he or she didn't want it shown. If the photo is less than a certain number of years old (75? 100? depends on which copy shop is used) and made by a professional photographer, photo copying places won't allow it to be duplicated for fear of infringement of copyrights, but I don't think this photo qualifies for that worry. Ms. Breeding herself could object, were she living, or her caretaker could, if she were living and incapacitated, but I don't see that one person, even a relative of the lady, should have the power to dictate what we can show on our respectful website. I wish someone WOULD post photos of my Floyd, Franklin, and Patrick counties ancestors! I would be delighted! And, it doesn't sound as if you were asked "very nicely" to me. There is no excuse for bad manners when writing to our list mom! Perhaps it resulted from a full moon, or something... Rena, We are so sorry that someone has been hateful to you. It seems the old world is full of people that always trying to tear down, the good things in our life. We love and respect you for being so helpful, patience, and caring for all the history that we all have exchanged. Before, I joined the Floyd List, I didn't know where my grandmother was buried, since I joined 3years ago, I have found the little cementry, out in the woods, Thanks to Cecil Hill and others, this cementry has been cleaned up a fence around it, and about 6 months ago, I think I have finally found the spot where she is resting, [she passed away in 1926]NO one knows the joy, love, and respect this has brought me. I'm hoping to get her a tombstone, so she can finally have the honor and respect, she so much deserves. Rena, I apppreciate so much the long hours and hard work you put into this list, so others can experience the love and joy that I have. I don't contribute alot, but it the first thing I do each morning, check on my Floyd List Buddies. Thanks so MUCH for all you do. "The Love for you shall prevail." Hi Miz Kat and Rena and all, As one who has never found a Breeding I'm not related too, let me chime in. As I remember there was more than one Euphemia Breeding, but the one who married James P. Quesenberry was my 2nd cousin twice removed. So I get a vote; keep the photo! And the degree of kinship is not the deciding factor. A couple of years ago I was driving across North Texas with the goal of finding the Dye Cemetery in Cooke County where Garrett Hurst and his wife Nicotia Miranda Quesenberry Clark Hurst (Euphemia's daughter) are buried. The night before I called one of their descendants, thinking he might give me directions or even visit the cemetery with me. He had never been to the cemetery! It was easy to find. There is a special feeling visiiting gravesites, especially when you may have been the first relative to visit in ages. On another trip I found my Pulaski-born great granduncle Fleming S. Lindsey in the Memphis National Cemetery. His story is interesting. He and his brothers had moved to Illinois before the CW, but he was the only one who joined up. So at the siege of Fort Donelson in TN there he was on one side with the 30th Illinois and inside the fort was his brother-in-law, my great grandfather William Raleigh Wheeler with the 51st VA. My Wheeler lived a full life, but Fleming died in LaGrange, TN, a few weeks later. If visiting their gravesites, or Fort Donelson (where the section of trench the 51st builit is marked, or Big and Little Reed Island Creeks where they lived, or Wheeler Knob in Carroll near where William was born, or finding and publishing their photos and stories is exploiting them, then I'll go back to playing duplicate bridge full time. Sharon: When I was doing research on these old petitions at the Virginia Historical Society, it was noted that it was usually the case that the beginning of a group was headed by the local preacher. Because I was researching the Skaggs/Scaggs name, one such group was headed by Richard Whitt and followed by names pertaining to the area that he lived and preached in. The historian said this helped with research because it gave you a place to start. Thought this might be helpful to you. Perhaps this angry person just doesn't understand the study of genealogy and what we do here. Those of us who are members of this list KNOW that far from "exploiting" anyone, we seek out our ancestors to honor and revere them. We study our past to learn about who we are now and where we came from. Unlike the much of the rest of the world, we think BEYOND the here and now (and our own little lives) and try to understand our place in this world. We love our history because we know it has helped shape the people we are today. I don't know of anyone on this list who is picking and choosing certain ancestors. We all take the good...and the bad...when we search out our lineages. More than one of us has found a real "bad apple" on the family tree...but we haven't ignored their contribution to our history, any more than we have "exploited" an especially interesting or unique ancestor! I think, if the complaining person really sat down and READ about what we do here, they would be thrilled to know that their loved one was being honored and acknowledged. I can think of nothing sadder than being forgotten in history. I personally know the THRILL of finding that burial place of a long lost ancestor, way out in a tiny cemetery, in the middle of nowhere and being able to pull the weeds away from the headstone. More than once, I have knelt by a grave site and said, "You are not lost. You live on in me." I hope the upset lady will think a little more about this Floyd "family" and realize that we are not strangers trying to "steal" her heritage, but rather we are kin that would love to reach out and include her in our own history. Rena, don't let this whole thing rattle you. WE love and adore all you do for us and greatly appreciate your wisdom and patience. Just keep on doing what you do! Rena, I have never heard of something so foolish! You are not exploiting an historical picture or material by sharing with others. (Unless, like Shannon said, the person holds the copyright) If you or the site were charging for copies of the picture, it may be exploitation. I really do not know. Anyway, we all appreciate the time and effort you put into this list and pages. It is the best I have found, and I work with a number of them. THANK YOU! And I'm not sure you need to remove anything, unless the person who e-mailed you holds copyright for the image....which I highly doubt. You just keep on keepin' on, Rena. You do an awesome job, and shame on that person for upsetting you!> --------------------------------- Looking for last minute shopping deals? Find them fast with Yahoo! Search.
Rena, That is terrible. I have never seen anything on this site that would suggest that anyone is explioting anyone. We are all looking for infomation about ancestors and that is all and sharing photos is a much welcome post. I hoep that person sends an apology to you. Keep up the good work and we all appreciate all your hard work. Miz Kat, I accidently deleted the site for the story on the 110 year old lady. Do you remember it? Thanks for your help.
